Netanyahu calls Trump ‘victory’ a ‘historic return’

Netanyahu congratulated and praised Trump for his “huge victory” in the presidential election, calling it “history’s greatest comeback!”

“Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America,” he said on X.

Netanyahu had not publicly endorsed either Trump or Harris. However, it is widely believed that he leaned towards a Trump win.

Speaking during a debate in July, Trump said US President Joe Biden should allow Israel to “finish the job” in Gaza and has also claimed to speak to Netanyahu on a near daily basis.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu once described Trump as the “best friend that Israel has ever had in the White House”.

While in office, Trump moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a move that was widely denounced by Palestinians and international law experts. He also recognised Israel’s claim to the occupied Golan Heights in Syria.

Erdogan hopes for global, regional peace after Trump’s victory

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential elections, saying he hopes that “regional and global crises and wars, especially the Palestinian issue and the Russian-Ukrainian war, will come to an end”.

He said on X that he believes “more efforts will be made for a more just world.

“I hope that the elections will be beneficial for our friendly and allied people in the United States and for all of humanity,” Erdogan added.

They'll come to an end all right, just not the end people are looking for.

Iran says it is ready for confrontation with Israel

The deputy chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Ali Fadavi, says Iran is ready for confrontation with Israel, the Iranian Students’ News Agency reported after Trump claimed victory in the US presidential election.

He added that Iran does not rule out a preemptive strike by the US and Israel.

Lebanon: ‘People here believe Trump is going to support Netanyahu’

That’s the question being asked: What will a Trump presidency mean for the Middle East and Lebanon? More wars or peace? He has said he wants to end the conflict, but the question remains as to how.

Is he going to put pressure on Israel? Because Israel’s positions are not going to be accepted by Hezbollah, which has called Israeli proposals tantamount to surrender and the violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty.

We still have not gotten a reaction from Hezbollah, but in the next four hours we are going to hear from the newly appointed Secretary-General Naim Qassem in his second recorded speech since taking office. The timing is no coincidence.

Hezbollah has said it believes the United States is a party to this conflict and cannot be a negotiator or a mediator, that it has given Israel unwavering support to carry out its wars on Gaza and the Palestinian people and here in Lebanon.

People here believe Trump is going to support Prime Minister Netanyahu and we’ll see more death and destruction.

People in Lebanon don’t know ‘what Trump’s vision is’

The people care about the political and financial crisis that’s going on: the war, the drones above – a constant reminder that Lebanon is at war with Israel.

There’s a feeling here that policy towards Lebanon won’t change whoever is in power in the US.  Then, you have the government, people who have to deal with Americans on a day-to-day basis. They’ll just have to deal with the Americans as the Americans see fit.

We don’t know what Trump’s vision for the Middle East is. It seems to change; almost every speech he gave where he talked about the Middle East was slightly contradictory to what he spoke about the time before.

The body politic is looking to see who the US special envoy to the Middle East and the secretary of state are going to be, what kind of relations they’re going to have with Lebanon.

Battlefield, not political action, will end war: Hezbollah chief

Hezbollah has broadcasted a pre-recorded speech by its Secretary-General Naim Qassem. Here are some highlights of his address:

  • Tens of thousands of “trained combatants” are ready to fight Israel.
  • The Palestinian cause is steadfast and will be victorious despite ongoing Israeli aggression.
  • Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has goals but no end date for his aggression.
  • Operation Al-Aqsa Flood created a new path that differs from the reality of the region.
  • Netanyahu aims to occupy Lebanon and end Hezbollah’s existence.
  • We expected the war to happen, so we prepared for it and are in a position to confront it.
  • The resistance fighters and the party carry a solid Islamic doctrine that stands with truth, pride and dignity.
  • All of our resistance fighters are martyrs who do not fear death.
  • Only one thing will end this war, which is the battlefield, not political action.
  • When Israel stops its aggression, there will be a road to indirect negotiations through the Lebanese state.

This Trump presidency could be worse for Palestinians

Omar Rahman, a fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs in Doha, says Palestinians have already lived through a “hard” four years of a Trump presidency but this time could be worse due to Israel’s war.

“Particularly for people in the West Bank who fear that Israel plans on extending its genocidal campaign from Gaza there,” Rahman told Al Jazeera. He added that the last year of a Biden-Harris presidency was “beyond disastrous” for Palestinians and the administration was “complicit in the Gaza genocide”.

“It is simply a frightening moment for Palestinians all around as no one appears willing to restrain Israel.”

Palestinians in Gaza ‘hope Trump finds a solution’

During his first term in office, Trump moved the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognised Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights. But while he supports Israel, Trump has also promised to bring an end to raging international crises, saying he could “stop wars with a telephone call”, sparking hope in Gaza.

Umm Ahmed Harb, from the al-Shaaf area east of Gaza City, is counting on Trump to “stand by our side” and end the strip’s suffering. “God willing the war will end, not for our sake but for the sake of our young children who are innocent, they were martyred and are dying of hunger,” she told the AFP news agency.

Mamdouh al-Jadba, who was displaced to Gaza City from Jabalia, is also hopeful. “I hope Trump finds a solution, we need someone strong like Trump to end the war and save us, enough, God, this is enough,” the 60-year-old said to AFP.

Another resident, 33-year-old Ibrahim Alian from Gaza City, told the agency: “We expect peace to come and the war to end with Trump because in his election campaign, he said that he wants peace and calls for stopping the wars on Gaza and the Middle East.”

I can't fault them for grasping at straws. Biden and Blinken have proven not to be trusted, now it's Trump's turn to prove the same :(

Trump victory to test his statements on ending war in Gaza within hours: Hamas

Trump’s victory puts to test his earlier statements that he can stop the war in Gaza within hours, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said to the Reuters news agency.

The Democratic party’s loss is the natural price for its leadership’s “criminal stance” towards Gaza, Abu Zuhri also said. “We urge Trump to learn from Biden’s mistakes,” the official told Reuters.

Meanwhile, another senior Hamas official told the AFP news agency that the US, under Trump, who claimed victory in the presidential election, must end its “blind support” for Israel in the war in Gaza.

“This blind support for the Zionist entity must end because it comes at the expense of the future of our people and the security and stability of the region,” Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, told AFP.

Lebanon files complaint to UN over deadly pager attacks it blames on Israel

Lebanese Labour Minister Mustafa Bayram called the attacks in September an “egregious war against humanity, against technology, against work”, saying his country had filed the complaint with the International Labour Organization in Geneva.

“It’s a very dangerous precedent,” he said. The incident involved exploding pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah, which killed dozens of people and injured thousands more across Lebanon.

“In a few minutes, more than 4,000 civilians fell, between martyrs and injured and maimed,” said Bayram. Victims not killed lost their fingers or eyesight, he added. “We are in a situation where ordinary objects, objects you use in daily life, become dangerous and lethal,” he said.

“If left unchecked, this crime could become normalised … I consider it a moral obligation to my country and to the world.” Israel has not officially taken responsibility for the attacks, but Bayram said it was “widely accepted internationally … that Israel was behind this heinous act”.

The pager attacks preceded Israel’s escalated air raids across Lebanon after nearly a year of cross-border fire, as well as its ground operation in southern Lebanon.

Egypt has joined a call led by Turkey and backed by dozens of countries, urging the UN to halt arms deliveries to Israel.

A Foreign Ministry statement on Tuesday said Egypt joined the call as part of “international efforts to pressure Israel to cease its continuous violations of international law and international humanitarian law”.

It also aims to stop “Israeli violations” against Palestinians and protect civilians, the statement read.

Palestinians fighting for survival, unaware of US election results

People are striving to find food, they are striving to feed their children – they don’t really know what’s happening with the US election. Since the early hours of the morning, Beit Lahiya has been witnessing Israeli raids – tanks moving in and people being hit while they’re evacuating.

Many believe whoever is going to make it as US president won’t make a very big difference on the ground.

We’re talking about Palestinians, people who have been living more than a year drained, exhausted, homeless, not receiving aid, not receiving food, deprived of all aspects of life. They are not receiving medicine. We are talking about people who have died. We are talking about thousands of Palestinians trapped under the rubble.

The situation in Gaza is indescribable and Palestinians don’t even have access to electricity. They do not have access to the internet. They do not know what is happening. All of the Palestinians here in the Gaza Strip are depressed. They don’t see any way this is going to end.

All that Palestinians care about is someone who is going to bring a ceasefire as soon as possible – because they can’t handle or bear this situation any more.

What’s behind the rift between Netanyahu and Gallant?

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/11/6/israels-wartime-row-whats-behind-the-rift-between-netanyahu-and-gallant

As Americans cast their votes in a monumental presidential election, Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu quietly ousted Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

The International Criminal Court has applied for arrest warrants for Gallant and Netanyahu, accusing them of committing atrocities such as starving Palestinians in Gaza and overseeing the extermination of civilians.

While Gallant has shown no remorse for Palestinians, he believes Israel is “conducting a war without a compass” and that it needs to reassess its military objectives in the region.

Netanyahu responded by replacing Gallant with Israel Katz, his foreign minister and loyal ally with little military experience.

Netanyahu expecting green light from Trump

Netanyahu sent a letter of congratulations to Donald Trump. It was a brief letter in which he emphasised the fact that this is going to strengthen the partnership between the two states.

This is an historic comeback for Trump and everyone knows that the Israelis have been waiting for this moment.

The decision that Netanyahu took yesterday when the election was going on to sack his defence minister was seen as a gesture towards Trump and against Biden, who used to invite Gallant to the White House against the will of Netanyahu.

So that’s an indication that Netanyahu is happy with the development. Judging by what Trump did for Israel during his first tenure – he moved the capital from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and gave the green light to annex Golan Heights, they are expecting much more of the same.

They are expecting no less of a green light to annex the whole of the West Bank, if not Gaza even.
