As Americans cast their votes in a monumental presidential election, Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu quietly ousted Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.
The International Criminal Court has applied for arrest warrants for Gallant and Netanyahu, accusing them of committing atrocities such as starving Palestinians in Gaza and overseeing the extermination of civilians.
While Gallant has shown no remorse for Palestinians, he believes Israel is “conducting a war without a compass” and that it needs to reassess its military objectives in the region.
Netanyahu responded by replacing Gallant with Israel Katz, his foreign minister and loyal ally with little military experience.
Netanyahu expecting green light from Trump
Netanyahu sent a letter of congratulations to Donald Trump. It was a brief letter in which he emphasised the fact that this is going to strengthen the partnership between the two states.
This is an historic comeback for Trump and everyone knows that the Israelis have been waiting for this moment.
The decision that Netanyahu took yesterday when the election was going on to sack his defence minister was seen as a gesture towards Trump and against Biden, who used to invite Gallant to the White House against the will of Netanyahu.
So that’s an indication that Netanyahu is happy with the development. Judging by what Trump did for Israel during his first tenure – he moved the capital from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and gave the green light to annex Golan Heights, they are expecting much more of the same.
They are expecting no less of a green light to annex the whole of the West Bank, if not Gaza even.
Netanyahu and Trump discuss ‘Iranian threat,’ Israeli leader’s office says
Netanyahu spoke with Donald Trump to congratulate the Republican leader on his US presidential election victory, Netanyahu’s office said.
“The conversation was warm and cordial,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. The two discussed “the Iranian threat” and the need to work together for Israel’s security, the statement said.
