This Trump presidency could be worse for Palestinians
Omar Rahman, a fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs in Doha, says Palestinians have already lived through a “hard” four years of a Trump presidency but this time could be worse due to Israel’s war.
“Particularly for people in the West Bank who fear that Israel plans on extending its genocidal campaign from Gaza there,” Rahman told Al Jazeera. He added that the last year of a Biden-Harris presidency was “beyond disastrous” for Palestinians and the administration was “complicit in the Gaza genocide”.
“It is simply a frightening moment for Palestinians all around as no one appears willing to restrain Israel.”
Palestinians in Gaza ‘hope Trump finds a solution’
During his first term in office, Trump moved the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognised Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights. But while he supports Israel, Trump has also promised to bring an end to raging international crises, saying he could “stop wars with a telephone call”, sparking hope in Gaza.
Umm Ahmed Harb, from the al-Shaaf area east of Gaza City, is counting on Trump to “stand by our side” and end the strip’s suffering. “God willing the war will end, not for our sake but for the sake of our young children who are innocent, they were martyred and are dying of hunger,” she told the AFP news agency.
Mamdouh al-Jadba, who was displaced to Gaza City from Jabalia, is also hopeful. “I hope Trump finds a solution, we need someone strong like Trump to end the war and save us, enough, God, this is enough,” the 60-year-old said to AFP.
Another resident, 33-year-old Ibrahim Alian from Gaza City, told the agency: “We expect peace to come and the war to end with Trump because in his election campaign, he said that he wants peace and calls for stopping the wars on Gaza and the Middle East.”
I can't fault them for grasping at straws. Biden and Blinken have proven not to be trusted, now it's Trump's turn to prove the same :(
Trump victory to test his statements on ending war in Gaza within hours: Hamas
Trump’s victory puts to test his earlier statements that he can stop the war in Gaza within hours, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said to the Reuters news agency.
The Democratic party’s loss is the natural price for its leadership’s “criminal stance” towards Gaza, Abu Zuhri also said. “We urge Trump to learn from Biden’s mistakes,” the official told Reuters.
Meanwhile, another senior Hamas official told the AFP news agency that the US, under Trump, who claimed victory in the presidential election, must end its “blind support” for Israel in the war in Gaza.
“This blind support for the Zionist entity must end because it comes at the expense of the future of our people and the security and stability of the region,” Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, told AFP.
