Because it was just a tech demo? Its constituent parts were made to showcase controller features, not to be assembled into fun levels.

The game that got a lot of praise and attention wasn't the tech demo (83 Metacritic). It was Rescue Mission from 2018 on PSVR1 (90 Metacritic). Rescue Mission was already regarded as one of the best platformers of all time, and to a lot of people it was "the Mario 64 moment of Virtual Reality". A remarkable achievement for a game developed by a small team of 25 developers working on it for only 18 months.

Team Asobi is as special as it gets. They really were the "hidden gems" of game developers!

I'm excited for another 9th gen game and reason to upgrade. Game looks better than Astro's Rescue mission and that was a ten for me, really curious if it'll be as solid and creative an experience without VR.

Yet my prediction no new Sony game would get a 95 on Metacritic anymore is still holding up strong for nearly 2 full generations...

It's pretty clear Sony games are the ones getting scrutinized, no matter how good they are, the scores still reach high numbers but they are always limited a certain barrier.

God of War gets a 94 and still beats Red Dead Redemption 2 that had a 97 in most of those sites awards in the end.

I'm not saying Sony games are treated poorly, actually being a decent/good Sony game probably bumps up the score for a lot of reviewers, like for other big companies, but they still get a limit some others do not, for no other apparent reason.

Despite Sony winning lots of those awards in the end of the year, probably the company with most of those overall GOTYs by a good margin, Sony is the only one from the console makers to never reach a 97.

Sony games are not slandered but are clearly artificially limited by being Sony games, what would be a perfect score for the game turning it a lesser, but still high, score happen every time, it obviously happens elsewhere too, but not as much into this highest of all tier of games.

With that wave of bad press about the PS5 Pro I'm sure Astro Bot will be directly affected at least on sales... and I wouldn't doubt on a late review as well.
