But why freeing up a little bit of RAM by cutting down the Game Chat feature?

According to your logic "the regular gamer" won't see the benefits of the additional RAM.

Ignorance is bliss.

Because other systems have freed up RAM and CPU usage on the OS side over time. For the Switch 2 are even 1/10 people going to buy that camera? I doubt it.

Since when does Nintendo what other console platforms do?

They have decided to offer that feature and promote that feature, so they will stick to it.

And why do you think that the few MB of RAM needed for the video feed is that important for other things?

Again: "the regular gamer" won't see the benefits of the additional RAM.

Not to jump into this conversation, but the original Switch had a special mode that freed up 350MB (iirc) that were previously allocated for the OS when disabling video recording. I think I recall similar modes for the 3DS and Wii U. So it's not just what the other platforms do.

The video recording feature is still there on Switch 1, they didn't remove it from the Switch OS (just hold the capture button for a second if you want to check it).

I also can't find an option in the hardware settings where users can deactivate that feature to save some RAM.

As far as I know there are only 5 third party games and zero Nintendo first party games on Switch where DEVELOPERS deactivated video capture for their games:

Video capture is no longer supported

  • Dead by Daylight - 5.1.0 Update (Video capture is no longer supported as of August 2021)
  • Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout (Video capture is no longer supported as of September 2022)
  • Fortnite (Video capture is no longer supported as of September 2018)
  • Paladins: Champions of the Realm (Video capture is no longer supported as of January 2019)
  • Lego City Undercover (Video capture is no longer supported as of version 1.0.2)

Wasn't Soundwave talking about a cut-down mode that select games could use rather than removing the feature as an option at all? And no, something like this would never be an option for consumers, but it would be an option for developers who need a little bit more memory to get over a performance bottleneck.

You also listed the games that removed the feature, and not the games that never had it in the first place. Video recording was opt-in on the Switch for developers.

Yes, they do look great - within the limits of what that class of mobile hardware can pull off (though these are all docked performance captures, so not representative of portable performance/quality).
Going with wild statements like "looks better than PS5 Pro"...not so great.

The best comparison video of the two, I've seen is actually from Blunty.

Full screen it in 4k, and look for yourselves.

Starts around 3min 44sec into video, and last pretty much until done.
Full side by side, video playing at the same time synced up as best as possible by blunty.

this is PS5 (base ps5) running performance mode, vs Switch 2 running its resolution mode (30fps).
So this is as close as its gonna get, in terms of looks between the two.
imo you can tell the PS5 is running like twice the fps, and a much higher base resolution.
So yeah.... "it looks better than ps5pro" is kinda nuts to me.

no one is saying it looks better than PS5 Pro ... the fact that it's that close is an embarrassment to the PS5/PS5 Pro if anything.

Home consoles are in big trouble IMO in the long run. When things like that Portable PS6 model release, Portable XBox, Steam Deck 2, and quite probably a Switch 2 Pro it's going to become more and more obvious you can play all the same games and still have them look "good enough" on a device that is both a home + mobile device.

A lot of people are going to opt to not even buy the standard "giant brick" PS6. Watch and see, a sea tide shift is coming.

When I see that video I see that hybrid form factor is gonna be the future. It may not all be from the Switch 2, but if that's what the Switch 2 can do, then these future portables from XBox and that rumored PS6 Portable make you wonder, not to mention a possible Switch 2 Pro this gen, Steam Deck 2, etc.

As more and more regular gamers realize the tier of game they can play on mobile/hybrid devices I think a not insignificant portion of them are going to start asking "why do I even need the giant brick Playstation console that can only stay stuck to my TV?".

Because a large portion of gamers is simply not interested in mobile gaming.

Why have an awkward device, waste money on an extra screen and settle for sub optimal resolution and frame rate when you can have a brick under the tv connected to AV system and enjoy games in Dolby Atmos / 7.1 surround on a 83" 4K HDR OLED.

Every time a new mobile device comes out a sea tide shift is supposed to be coming. How many times have we not heard mobile phones are catching up / good enough to play games. Steamdeck (6 million sold out of 1.86 billion PC gamers) didn't shift the PC market which is even more stuck to giant bricks.

Nintendo already had the audience that's fine with lower fidelity and folded those into their Hybrid. But maybe the Series S gaming segments might opt more for Switch 2, if MS can get gamepass on it. The Series X and PS5 crowd will still be looking forward to 4K60 high fidelity games. Not gonna be satisfied with 30fps or upscaling from low base resolutions or extra input lag for frame insertion.

Nah consoles are fine, streaming is not catching on either. (extra lag, lower fidelity) Switch 2 will do fine as well, not sure if it will outpace the Switch though.

Nah. It's more of a testament to how far mobile tech has come in recent years and how good CDPR is at optimization— often lost art these days. What used to be standard is now suddenly surprising to some. You may as well say Gunstar Heroes on Game Gear makes SEGA Genesis look embarrassing. Sometimes, a good port is just a good port.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

I personally think platforms are all going multi-form factor.

Nintendo is already there within a closed system (Switch & Switch Lite were two form factors.)

Microsoft is following with Game Pass and the fact that they seem to be moving away from fully closed systems towards maximizing subs.

Sony probably will follow Microsoft.

I'd be surprised if we see consoles as fully closed-platform devices in 2035. You might have a box under your TV that has the "Playstation" or "Xbox" name on it, but it probably will be one among many different devices within a family.

The "home giant ass brick" console is going to be in trouble in the coming years IMO. Which is really basically just the standard Playstation mainly as XBox is fading out of the picture.

I think even for Playstation, when people see they can buy a hybrid/portable model that runs most/all of the same games, the userbase is going to splinter heavily right there and a lot of people are going to opt for the hybrid model only.

Nintendo will respond with a Switch 2 Pro and off we go.
