Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - October 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch Vs. DS Japan:

October 2023 is the 80th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 247,666 units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 2.47 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 1.70 million units.

The 80th month for the Switch is October 2023, while for the DS it is July 2011. The Switch has sold 31.10 million units, while the DS sold 32.81 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 70.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 1.89 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - October 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

XSX|S Vs. X360 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 38,424 - X360

Gap change over last 12 months: 173,961 - X360

Total Lead: 297,416 - X360

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 523,692

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 821,108

October 2023 is the 36th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 38,424 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 173,961 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 297,416 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 523,692 units in 36 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 821,108 units. Month 36 for the Xbox Series X|S is October 2023 and for the Xbox 360 is November 2008.

The Xbox 360 crossed one million units in month 40 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.14 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

Yeah safe to say at this point that Xbox Series isn't catching 360 in Japan.
Still, that it's managed to sell multiple times as much as the Xbone already is something.

It would likely take a big exclusive gears towards Japanese gamers for the Xbox Series X|S to catch the Xbox 360 at this point. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey remasters and remasters would sell a decent amount of Xbox consoles. At least relative to how Xbox itself sells. No way Xbox would ever come close to Nintendo or PlayStation in Japan.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - October 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 145,608 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 380,903 - PS5

Total Lead: 66,142 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 4,522,592

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 4,456,450

October 2023 is the 36th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 145,608 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 380,903 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 66,142 units.

The 36th month for the PS5 in Japan is October 2023, while for the PS4 it is January 2017. The PS5 has sold 4.52 million units, while the PS4 sold 4.46 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 37.

The PS4 crossed 5 million in month 41, 6 million in month 47, and 7 million in month 53. The PS4 has sold 9.65 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 5.13 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Switch vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in the US - October 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 launched in the US in November 2005, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. Xbox 360 US:

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 34,866,419

October 2023 is the 80th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Xbox 360 outsold the Nintendo Switch by 99,009 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Nintendo Switch by 1.99 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Xbox 360 by 7.49 million units.

The 80th month for the Nintendo Switch is October 2023 and for the Xbox 360 it is June 2012. The Switch has sold 42.36 million units, while the Xbox 360 sold 34.87 million units during the same timeframe. The Xbox 360 sold current Switch sales in month 98.

The Xbox 360 sold 43.75 million units in the US during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 1.39 million units to outsell the Xbox 360 in the US.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in the US - October 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 US:

October 2023 is the 36th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 89,644 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 1.28 million units. The PS5 is currently ahead of the PS4 by 1.26 million units.

The PS5 has sold 16.10 million units in 36 months, while the PS4 sold 14.83 million units. Month 36 for the PS5 is October 2023 and for the PS4 is October 2016.

The PS4 crossed 20 million in month 47, 25 million in month 57, and 30 million in month 71. The PS4 has sold 34.90 million units to date in the US. The PS5 is 18.80 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in the US.

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Europe:

October 2023 is the 36th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 29,603 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.93 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 4.57 million units.

The PS5 has sold 14.45 million units in 35 months, while the PS4 sold 19.02 million units. Month 36 for the PS5 is October 2023 and for the PS4 is October 2016.

The PS4 crossed 20 million units sold in Europe in month 37, 30 million in month 51, and 40 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 45.87 million units to date in Europe. The PS5 is 31.42 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in Europe.
