Forums - Gaming Discussion - Apple iPhone 15 Pro Will Have Console Games (RE4R, RE Village, Assassin's Creed, DS)

Gaming with thumbs over the screen and buttons that grant no physical feedback? Eww, no thanks!

To go more in-depth on the iPhone 15 Pro’s focus on gaming, IGN sat down with Jeremy Sandmel, Apple’s Senior Director of GPU Software, Tim Millet, VP of Platform Architecture, and Kaiann Drance, VP of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing.

In the interview, Millet emphasized that Apple’s goal isn’t necessarily to compete directly with specific consoles like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S. Instead, its focus is on building a platform and tools that appeal directly to gam developers:

I think we’re focused on the developers and the titles in the games. Less on trying to compete with consoles. I think console is just a convenient way for us to talk about the classic games and the types of games that the developers that we’re targeting, the ones who have been successful in deploying there. We’ve done our best to try to deliver that same toolbox to the developers and we’re working hard with them.”

There you go, they refer to console gaming so that it's easier for the listener to understand what sort of experience they're trying to bring to their ecosystem, aka the traditional/classic gaming experience (as opposed to the freemium model mobile gaming is known for), but they're not trying to compete.

It's lame that iPhone 15 doesn't even run these games, I mean that phone is already $999 before tax. Just 15 Pro is kinda lame, and a small userbase will get to play these games.

Facts:

* iOS and Android is -the- largest gaming markets, larger than Playstation, Xbox and Switch... Combined.

* Mobile revenues started over taking console revenues as far back as 2015.

* Consoles are alive and well and not being replaced, they will survive together with pc and mobile.

Yeah, but how many are competing over that 91 Billion slice compared to the 58 Billion slice?

That is extremely hard to quantify.

My point being is that it's all irrelevant, mobile has been a dominant force in gaming for years and consoles are still healthy.

It's just like how PC never dissppeared despite consoles.

People like their platforms, be it due to the graphics/performance, controls or otherwise.

Assassin's Creed Mirage will be the first AAA console game which will launch day and date on consoles ... and iPhone. Yes, iPhone. Resident Evil 4 Remake and RE Village. Separately they also announced hardware level support for ray-tracing.

Apple has made massive performance gains these last few years, their M1/M2 Macbooks can basically emulate PC titles and you're going to like see a shit ton of PC games on M-series Macs and iPads in the near future with a new game porting tool they've made.

But iPhone is getting in on the act too with its new iPhone 15 Pro.

This could have significant implications for the industry.

On one hand it could be more competition for Nintendo, especially iPad in the future is probably going to be able to have some crazy games.

But this could also be good for Nintendo ... if AAA publishers are looking to make an iPhone/iPad version, a Switch 2 version is basically going to be a lock. Maybe say hello to Grand Theft Auto 6. You can ignore 100 million Switch owners, but can you ignore hundreds of millions of Apple iPhone users too? And it could keep Nintendo on their toes, maybe push them to make a Switch 2 Pro an actual reality this product cycle. You have to consider iPhones will get better in performance every year.

EDIT: Death Stranding is coming as well.

Although this all bodes well, these confirmed titles are all cross gen games with PS4 versions. GTA6 will not

Considering that there are almost as many smartphones as people on this planet [6.8 billion] that's still disappointing. Not to mention that 90% of that revenue is from microtransaction and that's not going to change.

Apple says this is all made possible owing to the new GPU found within its cutting-edge A17 Pro silicon - the first 3nm processor to hit a mainstream consumer device. That GPU supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing on top of a mooted 20 percent increase in general performance over its predecessor. The A17 Pro in general looks phenomenal, adding further CPU horsepower to its already market-leading performance, along with a larger, faster Neural Engine. Accelerated machine learning features? That'll be useful for the Metal FX upscaler, which we've already seen working on Mac, delivering results comparable with the market-leading Nvidia DLSS.

Other features of the iPhone 15 Pro range also impress, with a 120Hz variable refresh rate display, HDR and a relatively manageable screen resolution. Combined with Metal FX upscaling, the A17 Pro should be able to deliver a good level of GPU horsepower per pixel while retaining excellent image quality.

As for no one is waiting for this:

In terms of consumer excitement about this announcement, I can only offer anecdotal evidence but certainly in terms of the questions posed by the Digital Foundry supporters for this week's DF Direct Weekly, it was by far the most popular topic. We had more questions about this announcement than we did about the PlayStation State of Play or the Nintendo Direct.

However

The question is: can the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max deliver good experiences on higher-end games? Bearing in mind screen resolutions, Metal FX upscaling and the raw horsepower provided by the best-in-class Apple Silicon, I'd say the chances are good. The only potential fly in the ointment concerns sustained performance. The longer a mobile processor runs at maximum power, the hotter it becomes, and as smartphones typically don't have active cooling, performance throttles back. The basic idea of putting a phone into a case in order to protect it doesn't exactly help with heat dissipation either.

We're hoping to look at this new wave of games as and when they launch towards the end of this year and the beginning of the next, assuming we can get a decent video output feed from the hardware that doesn't compromise performance - but on a more general level, it would be fantastic to add a new platform to the range of hardware we cover at Digital Foundry.
