I know it's very unlikely to happen, it is more a wishful thinking than anything. I really would a like a way to use a gamepad controller like Wii U did.

It's really not that difficult to accomplish, since it's only to keep the screen functional while in home console mode, the only difficulty here is if they're willing to take the risk and give Wii U type of games a second chance

I would really like that too. I think there was a lot of untapped potential there. But, I don't know how much that would add to the cost, and how feasible it would be.

Well, based on the Switch, we have a handheld that you can detach the buttons to became a controller, then the rest of the console you put in a dock connected to a TV to "become" a home console. What if in the next gen you not only could do that, but also detach the screen from the rest of the console? Keeping the joy cons and the screen, putting only the console in the dock and voila! You have a console similar to Wii U. I name this mode as "Dual Screen" mode to add to the existing ones.

In my mind is very easy, I will leave to the design team in Nintendo to hack this up lol

Nah VR is still very niche despite major push from multiple vendors. And most have backed off or slowly ramped down investments into it. And none really made a big splash in the mainstream- will see if Apple makes a dent but I have my doubts. Nintendo would be ill-advised to follow the same path especially considering they generally favor affordability factor into selling consoles. And they don't have any issues selling software as-is.

Their secret sauce is their IP's and they can produce and sell devices that has massive appeal through all ages, from their games. They don't need new gimmicks now that Switch is a winning formula for them. Just iterate and improve things like controllers, hardware - like storage, i/o etc

I would rather they take away some features tbh...

Remove "HD Rumble". What silliness. Disabled it and never looked back.

It just needs a solid and steady flow of video games. That's the best sauce.

No, they learned with 3DS/Wii U that new=/=good. The ideas behind DS & Wii weren’t just new for the sake of being new, they served an actual purpose.

With each generation, from NES to PS2, controllers and gameplay mechanics became more and more complex so if you were someone who didn’t start gaming at a young age or were a lapsed gamer than the ability to get into/back into gaming was difficult.

Touch/motion controls reduced that barrier and made gaming accessible to everyone, 3D screen and Wii U gamepad however served no practical function, they were added features for the sake of adding new features.

Like DS & Wii, Switch also makes gaming more accessible, this time by offering a unified ecosystem that allows you to play wherever, whenever, however you want.

Switch 2 should absolutely be a standard upgrade with some QoL improvements just like 3DS & Wii U should have been to DS & Wii.

They can add new features as long as they aren’t the primary focus of the console and don’t lower the appeal or jack up the price, something like HD rumble rather than 3D screen/Wii U gamepad.

And... there is nothing they could do that would be both new and good? I kind of hope there is still something new that could be done with gaming hardware. Would be kind of sad if there's not.

That’s not what I’m saying, new can be good, just don’t lose sight of what makes the console appealing by going out of your way trying to add new things.

Touch screen, motion controls & hybrid form factor succeeded by making gaming more accessible so if the new idea isn’t something that does that then it should not be a centerpiece of the console.

Oh, it's technologically feasible. You wouldn't need that kind of complex setup.

With the Switch, the Gamepad really did nothing except receive a feed from the console, and display it. If you wanted to make a Wii U like thing work, you would just have to flip it. Have the dock serve as the Gamepad, receiving a feed from the Switch, and displaying it on the TV. I think that would work. But, it means the hardware has to be designed to create two separate displays, and you have to have more technology in the dock itself, so I don't know if it would be economically feasible for a feature that didn't really take off the first time around.

Yeah exactly. They have a fantastic package for hardware now - hybrid system, joycons, motion control, various modes of play, touch screen - with that all they need to do is give it a standard generational upgrade (7 years of advancement is a large spec upgrade) and iterate over the idea to improve it, just as we saw some improvements with the OLED model. If they find something cool to add that will actually be useful and doesn't jack up price, sure add it, but they don't need a unnecessary gimmick like WiiU/3DS tried. There would be nothing wrong with them not added any new hardware feature if they can't come up with something truly interesting and useful.

Software is where they can focus on shining:

- There is large room for improvement in their online setup (friend communication, online play, online infrastructure, matchmaking for NSO games).

- They have various IPs that they could improve (hell I think every single first party sports game on Switch was a rather lazy effort or required multiple added content after release to be a complete game). So like, make sure their game quality isn't uneven where some games are groundbreaking and some are confusingly lackluster.

- Add GC to NSO Expansion Pack (and maybe DC if its economical) and get all the NSO systems libraries fully built out by early in the next gen.

- Go deeper into health/fitness games. Instead of these super popular one-off or two-off games (Wii Fit 1+2, Ring Fit) develop a whole line of fantastic fitness games. I'm still amazed they never bothered making a second Ring Fit game. They left many millions of sales on the table right there.

- Bring back old IPs or handheld system IPs that we didn't see on Switch.

- Make an experimental wing of the company that tries out creative new ideas for existing big Nintendo IP, indie-style. So we between huge AAA releases we get say like $30 totally out of the box indie style Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc.

- Come up with interesting new social / communication ideas (StreetPass comes to mind)

Ton of software improvements they could make to separate next gen from the Switch. HW really just needs a 7-year spec upgrade as expected.

Step 1: Design the next console with a built-in sandwich maker
Step 2: Acquire the Cooking Mama license and make the next installment a launch title
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit

VR is a legit new paradigm for gaming and would be for Nintendo franchises, so I'd like to see them try that again, Labo VR was over flowing with ideas.

Even if it's just in a low-cost plastic version of Labo with some enhancements kind of way ... especially if the Switch 2 has a 1080p display instead of 720p ... that would be a fairly large upgrade over VR and at least give you a good sense of Mario Kart or Mario or Zelda etc. potentially in VR.
