Forums - Sales - Ps5 sells 40mill units.

40M in two years and 8 months is great. I think the PS4 did 40M in 2 years and 6 months, so PS5 is gaining ground.

If demand stays strong it should pass the PS4 sometime this year. Though I will say that this year isn't the strongest for PS5 software wise, so hopefully they can keep the momentum.

Well deserved!

I just saw that. I expect it to do PS home consoles numbers : more than 100M. (except that old PS3).

Fiscal Year Quarterly sell through versus shipped for PS5.

  • Q3 20/21 - 4.4M sold, 4.5M shipped
  • Q4 20/21 - 3.2M (7.6M) sold, 3.3M (7.8M) shipped
  • Q1 21/22 - 2.3M (9.9M) sold, 2.3M (10.1M) shipped
  • Q2 21/22 - 3.2M (13.1M) sold, 3.3M (13.4M) shipped
  • Q3 21/22 - 4.0M (17.1M) sold, 3.9M (17.3M) shipped
  • Q4 21/22 - 2.0M (19.1M) sold, 2.0M (19.3M) shipped
  • Q1 22/23 - 2.3M (21.4M) sold, 2.4M (21.7M) shipped
  • Q2 22/23 - 3.0M (24.4M) sold, 3.3M (25.0M) shipped
  • Q3 22/23 - 6.6M (31.0M) sold, 7.1M (32.1M) shipped
  • Q4 22/23 - 5.0M (36.0M) sold, 6.3M (38.4M) shipped
  • July 16 2023 - 4.0M (40.0M)

Sell through for April 1st to June 30th (Q1 23/24) would likely be around 3.5 million, so expect a shipment of around 4 million for the quarter reported next week for a LTD of around 42.4 million.

Note: It's typical for high selling platforms to have around 4 million more units shipped than sold through so expect shipped to moderately exceed sell through for the next few quarters.

Wow.  Thanks for putting this together.   Some of those earlier quarters are epic.  They actually sold more then they shipped one quarter 🫨 which is crazy.  There were some real suspect conversations on here about how stock wasn't the issue when sales were down.  It was silly then and it's even sillier now!

I honestly can't think of a higher profile release than Spider-Man 2... and it's bundled.   One assumes that October will be the month that PS5 takes the lead.

Disc version is £399 in the UK.

A $450 for US is expected in a day or so.

That's only one release, though. Sure it's popular, but one release a year is not going to help them achieve continued success.

Sony revealed sell through history in their most recent report, they were practically selling everything they were shipping until the last couple of quarters.

Damn Sony once again selling 2:1 vs Xbox. That 80 billion studio buying spree and you are still a distinct 3rd place....

I think you kind of miss the point.  Its why MS could spend 80 billion and all the regions accept it.  If MS and Sony were in a more competitive situation, that deal probably does not go through.  Also because Sony is selling 2:1 vs the Xbox, Sony probably could not respond by purchasing a publisher of their own because they dominate the market.  For MS, this is not a bad thing as they get to make huge purchase and proclaim weakness in the market as they build towards a different future where they are not reliant on console sales.  For Sony, this means they need to double down on console sales and the console market but then they could miss out if the market shifts.

In business, its not always where you at that is the biggest issue, its whether where you at can you continue to grow.  As Phil stated, Sony won the console war so and if anyone was paying attention, MS recognized that a long time ago but the console war is not the only war to be waged nor is it the only place to play games.  You can bet MS will continue to play the weak position as they position themselves as a gaming powerhouse and they are more than happy for Sony to proclaim their success as it restrict their ability to make significant purchases.
