Where VGChartz numbers adjusted with the info?
If not, very damn good tracking guys.

No adjustments. If you read my other post you will see VGC estimates are either right on track for PS5 to top 40M in the second week of July or we are a tad too high. I will have a better idea once NPD/Circana for June comes out tomorrow.

When was the last time VGChartz got updated with official numbers?

The tracking is really damn close.

Sony doing what Sony does.

Sony did reveal quarterly PS5 sell-through figures through March 2023, which I made sure our estimates match. So any adjustments down would need to be done in April through the first week of July.

Absolutely brilliant, Will!  Now we have pretty much exact VGC chartz! (For PS5 at least).  Having actual data really helps to elevate things like our sales discussions and predictions.  I wish all companies provided this information because it really gives us an orthogonal view of the industry and the habits of consumers.   Its about the consumers after all.

Tell me about it. Microsoft is the worst when it comes to providing sales data. At least we got some recent data from them with Xbox One around 58M lifetime and Xbox Series at 21M+. Nintendo doesn't usually share sell-through and only shipped, but that does provide enough of an idea to get a range of where sell-through would be.

Damn Sony once again selling 2:1 vs Xbox. That 80 billion studio buying spree and you are still a distinct 3rd place....

Microsoft really shot it's brand in the foot by making the last xbox so inferior hardware wise to playstation 4. They also can't seem to make any hits lately.

Fortunately, a sold through breakdown has also been provided.  Sony can't just overship consoles.  Someone has to be buying them.  Retailers don't have infinite storage space.

  • Q1 2021 - 3.2M (7.6M)
  • Q2 2021 - 2.3M (9.9M)
  • Q3 2021 - 3.2M (13.1M)
  • Q4 2021 - 4.0M (17.1M)
  • Q1 2022 - 2.0M (19.1M)
  • Q2 2022 - 2.3M (21.4M)
  • Q2 2022 - 3.0M (24.4M)
  • Q4 2022 - 6.6M (31.0M)

  • July 16 2023 - 4.0M (40.0M)

But in reality, given the stock shortages, why would people believe that they needed to  (or even could) overship'?  Why do people think that all of that demand would just evaporate?  Its not logically consistent.  I thought the bet was whether they could actually produce the units to begin with lol.

It's not that demand will "evaporate", but with a steady supply of PS5s demand will no longer be pent up. In addition, there will no longer be things that influence a buyer into purchasing the product outside of simple desire (e.g. FOMO, scalping, etc).

Sony can absolutely over ship PS5s now. I see PS5s on shelves at this point. It's no longer being bought out immediately. Sony can over ship consoles by assuming demand is just as high as it was when stock was severely limited. I don't think Sony is doing that, though. I think Sony is trying to do what most manufacturers do, shipping just enough product to meet demand and trying not to leave too much product on shelves to sit and gather dust.
