Time/Cost

What would we need for a new site/or huge overhaul?

Who's paying them? Lol.

Anyway...This site I'd say needs at least a few experienced Web Developers at minimum given all the stuff it has (GameDB, Forums, Articles, Profiles, Charts/Tools, etc.) Desktop + Mobile and a Web Designer, all will have to be unpaid volunteers and thus do it in their own free time and be vetted by the volunteer staff, Lol. Only way they could get paid is through VGC Supporter but that's already split between Writers (Admins too?) and is a low amount so it would basically be paying them nothing still.

Bandorr is all we have right now, Talon vanished, I said this even when we had Talon, we need more people.

We don't have the money to do any major overhaul of the site. As Ryuu stated we have Bandorr right now to do volunteer work for the site. He helped me out coding it so I can post an entire months worth of hardware estimates and do adjustments much easier than before.

We could work on a list of minor changes that Bandorr, if he is interested in, could work on.

IMO the front page is a bit too busy and that could drive away new visitors if they are overwhelmed. So, it could use some cleaning up.

I know there's far more important issues and I have dozens of ideas in my mind about what things we should do to VGChartz but so little people to bounce my ideas off, Lol. I enjoyed doing that with Talon because I genuinely wanted to help make the site a better place but there's just so much stuff, the site Imo is too unfocused due to having so much stuff, how can one Admin work between GameDB, Articles, Forums, Charts, Design, etc. Across Desktop and Mobile too, on a 10+ year old codebase.

Anyway, this sort of links into that but I personally think we should remove Prediction League from the front page and just have the rounds linked in an ongoing thread and I think we should remove Poll of the Week from the front page too and just have it as an "Important" tagged thread for a week at a time (Bandorr could whip that functionality up easy) and you've all seen how "Important" threads appear.

I'm not a fan of how PotW currently works in the sense that thread polls can only be voted on by logged in users and the votes are based on account while PotW voted through the front page is based on IP so it's easily cheated, botted, etc. It's not a true representation of the communities opinion and I think we should be encouraging sign ups too.

I like the concept behind Avatars shown on front page but it's so messy, they all need to conform to the same size or be removed Imo.

The key focus of the site needs to be Articles/Charts and Forums. Front page is far too busy, too intimidating, too much for new users.

The reason I list minor stuff for now is because we literally only have Bandorr, I can't say to the fella "DO A MASSIVE COMPLETE TOTAL REVAMP OF THE ENTIRE SITE, DESKTOP AND MOBILE TOO!" so when people say "why are we talking about this minor stuff?" it's literally cause we don't have the manpower to talk about any massive changes to the site, Lol but there's small things we can do to improve UX, functionality, features, etc.

I think we should put Website Topics under Off-Topic Forum too, it's a bit weird to have 3 sections but 1 section only has 1 topic section, rather than the simple.

1. Gaming.
2. Off-Topic (Everything Else).

People can still manually uncheck what topics they don't want to see via the tick area but it just cleans things up a little.

Takes down that little scroll bar to 5 instead of 6 too.

Then do something like this instead of the scroller.

I'm not a graphic designer, it's a concept to show an idea, Lol.

Never get rid of the logo flipping you off. It's one of the best bad logos ever.

Most users here are pretty old, as is the site. It's a forum in 2024 - most people have migrated to reddit or X for their preferred echo chamber(reddit bans things they don't agree with and X is 4chan lite.) Why log into a dusty old forum when you can get instant dopamine hits on your readymade phone app in just a few clicks?

Who cares about game sales anymore? Especially young people. A layman opens steam charts and either lol's or ree's at Concord and quietly moves on. Us old fogeys can bicker about this and that but all the passion of competition was deemed toxic long ago which ruins the fun of a place like this.

It's best to leave it is now with minor tweaks. Site refreshes rarely invigorate long term activity and eventually lead to less overall engagement.

Dedicated forums are a dying medium. We all just need to come to terms with that. They are going the way of the old BBS, IRC, newgroups, etc... Do not waste money and massive efforts to revamp the whole site.

If any energy is increased, apply it toward sales tracking. Since VGC doesn't have corporate backing like IGN or GameSpot, it is the uniqueness of sales tracking that allows VGC to keep going long after thousands of others have died. Play to your strengths.

We will continue to do hardware estimates and report on shipment figures and player totals from official sources. It would be a long way off as it requires a lot of work to do, but we have some ideas on making it easier to find the latest shipment figures and player totals.
