Forums - Nintendo - TotK really makes Switch feel dated

I'm playing on a 2017 Switch with the day 1 patch and it's running fine for me.
Using Ultrahand in a highly detailed and busy area can causes dips, but given the slow paced nature of this feature, it's not a big deal.
Exploration and combat run consistently.

Much as I enjoy Digital Foundry, I feel like it, and just console war propaganda, have fostered a somewhat unhealthy obsession with graphics/performance among gamers.

I wouldn't call it unhealthy.

Digital Foundry has certainly provided a valuable service to gamers as many developers rush out buggy and low-framerate games as of late... It's our money on the line remember.

There are frame drops in tears of the kingdom, but it's also not a twitch-shooter so it's impact is far less pronounced... But was also something that was present in Breath of the Wild also.

Don't get me wrong, I like DF and they do a good job of pointing out when games perform badly so that people are aware, so I agree there.

I just feel like a lot of folks can take it too far, like writing off a game as subpar just because it has framerate dips, or putting more emphasis on pixel count than on gameplay, leading to situations where you have a game like TOTK and some people will reduce its entire worth to just its performance metrics. (Not you, OP)

Switch is dated - yes. But Nintendo cheaping out on the hardware every generation just exacerbates the problem.

They didn't really "cheap out" on the Switch; it was quite capable for a mobile platform at its time and price point. It's more that portables simply cannot be as powerful as dedicated consoles due to the laws of physics.

Yea they are being cheap. No reason for the switch not to get a pro version. The only reason is because they probably could not sell for the massive profit they sell the switch at.

They couldn't even keep up with demand for the regular Switch during much of 2020-2021, so there was no reason to make a Pro.

By 2022 it was too late in the system's life for a Pro to really make sense.

So what was the reason they made a oled switch? these things take years to plan. obviously  a powerful switch with Oled would cost Nintendo a pretty penny and they would have to sell for 600$ to make the profit they making with the current models.

A Pro likely would've been a bigger investment than the OLED in terms of R&D and such, and harder to justify when you're already selling like crack.

If they did make a Pro, I'm pretty sure they could've made it work on much less than $600, it's not like they'd be printing the chips out of gold.

They could make it work but they would not make as much profit as they like. when you consider switch is ancient tech still selling for 300$. just kinda sad that you can get way better versions of Nintendo games on PC and not just talking about switch games.

There's not much incentive for them to drop the Switch's price when it continues to sell well, that's just supply and demand.

Outside of the underperforming Xbox One or super cut down models like Switch Lite and probably soon the Series S, the days of consoles dropping down to really low prices seem to be over. Sony never dropped the PS4 under $300 either.

Yea that's also insane. I think covid and inflation had a big effect. let' see what happens f a big recession happens in a year or so

It certainly appears as though price drops are thing of the past. But, I'm not sure that we're getting an accurate picture. All of the consoles have gotten significant price drops in that the value of the currencies they are priced in have declined considerably.  So, while the number on the price tag has remained the same, the amount of time that someone has to spend at work to get the money to pay for the console has declined significantly.

This kind of price drop does not have the same mental impact as an actual change in the price tag. But it does impact the retailers, manufacturers, and marketers in essentially the same way.  So this may have tied everyone's hands in terms of their ability to change that number on the price tag.

If inflation, at least of the US dollar, ever gets back under control for several consecutive years, then we'll be able to more fairly compare pricing strategies across time periods and console generations.

What really makes it feel dated is playing Red Matter 2 before playing TotK on TV. Red Matter 2 runs at 4K 120fps on PSVR2, looks incredibly sharp with amazing lighting and of course much easier to manipulate and build things. (Or put together rather, it's a puzzle adventure). Then playing Zelda the drop in resolution, contrast and color depth is very notice able, 30 fps feels stuttery and when turning you notice a further drop in resolution which recovers when you stop turning.

I thought it would take longer before VR looked better than flat screen games, I was wrong!
