About the same. The PS5 is basically a PS4 Pro Pro² so of course people wanted to buy it. You wouldn't have any purpose to buy the old hardware

I don't think it was the supply issues but rather Sony just let it die as soon as PS5 released. With how PS4 still getting software support I think if they kept producing the PS4 the last 2 or 3 years then it could've easily sold 120m. 130m if permanent price cut to $200 easily
PS5 being backwards compatible and not much more expensive than PS4 (at least the Disc-less version) meant that buying a PS4 at that point was a pretty bad investment.
Without the hardware supply problems, the PS4 would have sold less, because the PS5 would have cannibalized the sales. It's BC, no reason not to buy it outside of the price difference (and if that was the case, you could always buy it used, it's not like there aren't plenty of PS4 on sale around...).

Pretty much. Getting a new PS4 for a time was even worse of an investment because there were new PS4s selling for $350 and way more when it was also expensive to get a PS5.
It is baffling at this point why they haven't reduced the price of the Slim. I suppose the tens of thousands of people left who will buy a PS4 are willing to pay $300 and it's not worth it to Sony to drop the price to $200 or $250.
Makes me wonder if Nintendo will charge $400 for their next system and keep the price of all the Switch models the same.

I think it hit it's peak, especially when the PS5 dropped.

I always wonder if we would’ve gotten a PS4 super slim
It would have sold about the same. PS4 sold more than usual due to covid in 2020 and less the years after. Without covid the curve would have been a bit different, but at the end of the day sales would have been about the same. Backward compatibility of PS5 didn't help either.
The supply chain crisis didn't had a big impact on PS4 sales in my opinion. Sony even increased the production of PS4 in 2021, because it was easier to produce than PS5. Sales of PS4 didn't climb, because the demand wasn't there.
PS4 pretty much already died before the launch of the successor, which is very unusual for a PlayStation console.
Last edited by siebensus4 - on 16 May 2023I'm not sure that it was hurt much at all. It may have even been helped by supply chain problems with the PS5. I didn't hear of a single person that was unable to get a PS4 that wanted one.
