You'd be right, their main goal is mostly to do with their ecosystem, to be using Gamepass, sign in with MS via your PC, mobile or console, wherever, whenever.
MS has certainly made it easier to just get your stuff on PC/Xbox, but as a result, it's made their console side less reasonable to go for (unless you're really low on the budget to afford a PC, like our current time-frame).
Still, I feel like their ecosystem will greatly outlast their physical side, at the end of the day.
