Keeping in mind too it's harder to get past 1 billion+ these days. Movie business definitely took a hit post-COVID, if the Mario movie was this kind of hit pre-COVID, we're probably talking 1.4-1.5+ billion IMO.

Doubtful, the average 2022 release grossed more than any other year since 2010 (and we had two of the top 5 all-time grosses in the past two years). The box office is just smaller overall because fewer movies are released in theaters these days. Ticket prices being up 10-20% since 2019 helps too.

If anything movies like No Way Home and Mario were aided by the absence of other significant releases for many weeks around them.

I can't recall what movies were around the time of No Way Home, but No Way Home stood on it's own two feet and people went to see it for what it was not because there was a lack of other movies.

As for Mario not being up against significant releases?

There was Avatar 2, Creed 3, Dungeons and Dragons, John Wick 4. Considering what ticket prices cost in my country, all these take away from Mario if there was nothing else on. Mario has done well because it has a significant fan following in the world. If it had a different title it wouldn't even be on the radar.

Mario now is officially the highest grossing non-Disney animated film of all time, the highest grossing Illumination film of all time. If it can gross another 97 million WW (roughly) it will move up to no.2 all-time.

1 2019 Frozen II $1,437,862,795
2 2013 Frozen $1,256,848,976
3 2018 Incredibles 2 $1,242,805,359
4 2023 The Super Mario Bros. Movie $1,159,247,654
5 2015 Minions $1,157,271,759

Oh wow I wasn't sure if it would quite pass minions this week.

Should be close to passing Incredible 2 after next weekend, and move into second in two weeks. Might not be in theaters long enough to pass Frozen 2 but ya never know. Looks like 1.4B is definitely a good target.

I guess it did just over $100m this week. Should be right around 1.3B in two weeks. Another 3 weeks beyond that would probably have it passing Frozen 2 or at least very close to it. But is it gonna stay in theaters for another 5-6 weeks?? I have no idea how long movies stay in theaters these days.

The Japan release could be huge for the film. It's estimated at 48 mil after 9 days and most notably sales actually increased 35 % the second weekend, so it's probably just getting started. For comparison Frozen did a total of 250 mil in Japan while Frozen II did 120 mil. It's ahead of both atm though naturally the first one got a slower start since it wasn't some well known IP at the time.

The Mario Film has the third biggest 10 day total only behind Demon Slayer and One Piece Film Red in yen.

It's now only $23 m behind Incredibles 2 in NA at a similar point. If it keeps tracking as it did in the past 15 days, it should gross another $100m domestically and reach around $1.4 b worldwide.

However, this weekend it had the first >50% drop since launch, courtesy of GotG, showing how it previously benefited from a lack of competition. So maybe a bit less, but perhaps not entirely out of the cards yet depending on Japan's numbers.

Sitting inside the top 20 now.  It looks like it's finally starting to run out of steam.  Only Frozen II sits atop it as far as animated films.

Nice. I dunno how much longer it'll still be in theaters but hopefully it has enough time at the box office left to pass those few right in front of it and get to #15 passing Black Panther.

In Domestic is already at #14 so lets see where it can go in worldwide.
