Question for those of you against the discontinuation to digital discs. Do you still intend to buy Wolverine at launch/launch window if sony sticks to their current stance?

As in don't buy Wolverine physically? Seems strange to hurt Insomniac when there's a physical variant of their game available and you're choosing not to buy it to protest a move toward digital.

I don't think it's weird, Playstation knows people are going to rush to buy physical in reaction to the news. There's no impact there if everyone is waiting day one to purchase their latest title, it actually tells them to continue on business as usual. If they feel it's hurts their wider business however (underperformance)  and causes enough friction with their core market to break the bond then they are more likely to react. So far from the engagement I've got on the topic in threads I imagine people will continue consuming Playstation content as per usual, so I don't think there's going to be any movement here.

Sony first party titles have already benefitted from decent physical shares, their presumption is simply that 95% of these people will just jump to digital if the option is taken away.

I've been an all digital buyer for nearly the last decade. I bought a ton of games on sale and some at full price. On very rare occasion I would buy physical, and for the most part, usually as gifts.

It sucks that we are losing the choice. But I can't say I'm going to stop playing games in 2028 because there's no more physical. I get all the concerns about digital ownership, and I do hope some improvements can be made with all the backlash currently going on, but Game Sharing is a digital benefit for me that trumps any benefit I could have from buying physical.

Hopefully Sony gives us the option to use a disc drive on the PS6 console. And I think Sony should at least consider having Collectors Editions come with physical games. At least with their first party releases.

Its the only compromise I can see Sony coming to at this point, and its one that would still piss the majority of people off lol.

Game sharing is also what secured me prioritising digital as I shared with my brother. I'm ultimately unaffected since I haven't bought a physical game since 2018 but I do hope it forces not only Sonys hand but also wider digital preservation & ownership laws/discussion. But the market needs to care enough to cause genuine disruption ala PS3/XboxOne. We will see whether that happens.

I've been put off enough by Playstations actions recently that I don't feel like endorsing any of their new products/subscriptions for the near future. I have a long backlog and a Switch 2 to play, so I don't mind offsetting some of my purchases for the next year or so. Probably Kena is the only "2026" title that may bring that into question with Ember being an independent & beloved studio but I doubt it's coming out this year. I hope it does though (Early November/December) because I think it would benefit from being one of the only big family friendly games this holiday.

Sony hasn't even been doing that for their first-party CE's for years now lol. No way they'll suddenly make a single exception, which also happens to be something they already abandoned.

I just finished watching Jason Schreier's video breaking this down, and it's insane how highly incentivized both Sony and third-party publishers are in going all digital. For the most part, it's a pretty obvious conclusion, but actually breaking down the economics behind both, shows just how much more money both parties make from a digital versus physical. Especially when you add up however many millions of copies.

I'm sure Sony would've loved to have made this change years ago, but knew it wasn't the right time.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

I also feel this is part of Sony's solution to how expensive not only their games are to make, but AAA gaming as a whole. Sony and third-parties making an extra $15-$20 on every game sold can drastically improve revenue, and by extension, profits/margins.

And depending on the game an extra few 100k copies sold that would of otherwise been on the second hand market.

Looks like Christopher Barrett has won his lawsuit against Sony and Bungie. It was a $200 million lawsuit. Not disclosed how much of a settlement he's getting, but getting a credit for his work on Marathon, along with the undisclosed amount. I'm sure it's nowhere near $200M, but he's still coming away with a phat paycheck lol.

As if Bungie wasn't short on money to begin with lol. This has to be the 4th or 5th lawsuit where Bungie has had to pay up.

▫️Sony would be convinced that, over time, most players will end up accepting the transition to a 100% digital ecosystem.

▫️The company believes that users will continue supporting PlayStation even without the option to buy physical games.

▫️Additionally, they consider that it is not necessary to maintain direct contact with fans because of brand loyalty.
