Marathon is at 90% positive after 10k reviews on Steam. I want to try it but I missed the server test, am not sure I'd like its PvPvE MP format, and am not quite willing to pony up $40 to find out. Maybe it'll have a sale before the end of the year. In the meantime I'm enjoying the soundtrack. Best I've heard since Clair Obscur. I'll chime in with others in saying I'd love a SP game in this universe.

Estimations for Marathon first weekend (on pc):

The most interesting part of that picture to me is that before the release of the game the estimation was for the game to sell 260k in it's first month based in wishlistings (Marathon was #32 in wishlistings before release) and also most pre orders were from the USA with over 50% of sales so the game surpassed that estimation and the distribution by country balanced a little.

On PS5 obviously there's not a lot of info other than the rating:

Among developers there's a believe that around 3% of the people who buy a game will leave a review, obviously that's just an stipulation but using that inexact math we would be talking of MAYBE 200k+ copies on PS5.

I wouldn't go to the extend of calling it a success because only Sony knows what they were expecting based in everything that has happened since the announcement of the game but it looks healthy, it is selling and the fact that the game is good helps a lot. It also looks like the server slam actually purged the game from people who were only there to see it "releasing already dead", so that's also good news. One of the benefits of a game having a price.

This was the rating of the server slam on PS5:

I understand it wasn't perfect but I'm of the idea that if you have the need to put one star in a game is because you really shouldn't have played that game and you knew it lol.

Anyway, hopefully these results give Bungie a break and I would be really curious to know even an estimation of Marathon sales on xbox lol.

Feels like Marathon is a flop here in Brazil, but that should be expected, it could ever thrive here if it was f2p.

The new map that dropped, Outpost, is haaaaaard!!! It's bad enough that there's now fire rain outside the base that melts your health, but every exfil is guarded, so no easy exits. Not that they were easy to begin with in the other 2 maps. And somehow the AI feels harder to fight lol. Props to the Bungie team for making some incredibly competent enemy AI. But because of this, much better loot to find.

There are now some puzzles. Wouldn't say raid-like, but definitely getting players ready for Crypto Archive, which somehow is supposed to be even HARDER as well as having raid-like encounters! lol this game is definitely not for the faint of heart.

While solo matchmaking is a thing, the game doesn't encourage it. The game almost feels like a survival horror experience when you're solo'ing lol.

Also, Thief is broken. Please nerf her Bungie lol

It looks like Marathon is doing well on the PlayStation Store after the updated rankings.

Its charted top ten in NA, Canada, UK, Australia, and has made it to the top five for the Xbox Store. I think its clear the majority of Marathon's audience is the western market. Bungie games historically have a bigger console audience compared to other multiplayer games.

According to Paul Tassi, Bungie sources told him that so far, Steam is Marathon's biggest platform. While Bungie has historically been huge on console, Extraction Shooters have been a PC-centric genre since their inception. Even Arc Raiders is wildly bigger on PC than console. And if that's the case of PC being the bigger platform for Marathon, to make things slightly bleak, he also says that Sony is envisioning Marathon as a blockbuster.

Which tbf, why wouldn't Sony expect that? Buy Bungie for nearly $4 billion, well aware that Bungie's next project is Marathon, and Destiny 2 was still making bank at that time. It's entirely fair that Sony expected Marathon to be a blockbuster. Currently, Marathon is looking like a good success, but not a blockbuster. That being said, I really hope Sony lets Marathon continue, even if it's a smaller community, as long as there is a continual dedicated playerbase playing the game, it deserves to be supported.

Talking about online games, anyone playing Ghost of Yotei Legends? It just released today, I'm probably going to play it later.

With how volatile the acquisition has been for Sony, perhaps they adjusted their expectations for Marathon, and these numbers are good for them.

I do hope Sony gives this game a chance to succeed in the long run. Player retention has been decent so far and the user reviews have been strong. It would be short sighted for Sony to wind down Marathon's support. It could be one of those games that turn around in the long run after a few updates similar to Destiny 2. However, I do think if Sony had to choose between starting development of Destiny 3 (as its been rumored) or continue supporting Marathon, they're going with the former.

I hope that IF and WHEN Marathon sells the million Bungie has the authority to say so. That will help for more people to jump in.

And PC should totally be the target for Marathon, Fairgames, 4:loop and Destiny 3 in the future. The demographic is there and most importantly China is there.
