The fans shouldn't be blamed at all. Bungie leadership deserves all of it. Countless times over the years, Bungie devs begged leadership for specific changes to happen, and it was always put down. Even up to the recent cancellations! Leadership had already decided to cancel all future content months ago, yet teams were still working on it. Some departments that were already in the know asked leadership to inform the entire company so as not to splinter, yet they refused.
Leadership knew by 2021 when the end of the story arc for Destiny 2 would happen. New story arcs were brought up, new major expansions that would properly follow up the Light & Dark Saga were brought up, everything was shot down. A former Bungie dev posted about a pitched dedicated expansion to Xivu Arath, the Hive God of War as a follow up to the The Taken King and The Witch Queen expansions to complete the trilogy of expansions dedicated to those siblings. Shot down.
Another dev posted that "Pete Parsons was the real Destiny killer"
Bungie leadership had years to get something else going, but chose not to. They deserve ALL the blame for how Destiny has ended. For all the highs the franchise has had over the years, it has rarely met its full potential due to poor decision-making.
As dramatic as the Destiny community is being right now, it's fully deserved.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Like I said before, Destiny never truly lived up to its potential, yet Bungie nailed so much about the game that you just couldn't stop playing.
