Astro as an IP is intrinsically tied to PS as hardware, and now as software, too. I don't believe that dissappears from it's DNA, but I also don't think that Astro Bot is indicative of what the IP will always be.
The world of Astro began with just Playroom, and it expanded with Playroom VR and Rescue mission. All of these expanded the world, enemy and boss types. The stronger homages are really only recent from the free title and Astro Bot itself.
I think the best way for Astro to grow is to explore other genre types while still keeping it's mainline 3D platformer going. But that would involve having other teams being able to play with the IP. But I'm not so worried about it: the game seems in safe hands.
