Forums - Sony - PlayStation Nation |OT| Playing Astro Bot on the Horizon Until Dawn

I will likely just pick a device where I can just play a few MMOs and some Free to Plays. I believe I'm done heavily investing into the big 3 eco-systems and building huge libraries.

I'll probably go with whichever device is going to be the most versatile.

If Sony indeed goes fully multiplatform like Microsoft then that'll be the end of PlayStation consoles blowing by 100M+ hardware sales easily.

They will be more in line with PSP/PS3 level sales as a baseline with perhaps PS1 sales as the ceiling. Unless the infamous Xbox leaker is right once again, and this is the end of Xbox in the console space, you might as well make some money from them lol. I can also see a scenario where Arrowhead wants a Bungie deal in order to be acquired and this is Sony accommodating them.

My wildest theory about this is Sony is gearing up to acquire Warner Brothers streaming and gaming properties with their financial division spin off set to happen by the end of the year.

What do you mean by fully multiplatform though? The next Xbox device will be a Windows PC so yeah, everything Sony ports to PC will be available on it but it's not going to be direct competition to PlayStation anymore, it's going to be a Windows PC with an Xbox logo slapped onto it, Lol. And an Xbox ecosystem via the UI/UX/BC but that will be available on all Windows PCs too.

Is it really that big of a deal if PlayStation sells 100m or sells 80m? Lol. Would still be a huge success either way.

Sony is publishing this, while they avoided publishing MLB and Marathon, I don't think this is some Arrowhead making demands thing.

Sony is publishing it so I doubt it.

I think you guys are overestimating the damage that will be done to Sony, they've basically already sucked dry Xbox's userbase, whatever remains of Xbox's userbase is largely a hardcore audience who are entrenched in Xbox's ecosystem and they're likely going to stick with Xbox due to Game Pass or switch to the future Xbox/PC hybrid.

And that future Xbox/PC hybrid is going to play all PlayStation games anyway because it's going to be a Windows based device so what difference does it make whether Sony ports to Xbox now, or has all their games available on a Xbox branded device in 2 years from now? Plus GaaS make the most sense to be on all devices, they need as much help as they can get.

Sony will be fine, why would people leave the PlayStation ecosystem because they ported games to Xbox? All of Xbox games are coming to PlayStation anyway so all they'd be doing is abandoning their libraries, friends, trophies, etc and plopping down $400+ for another console. The only danger I see is them losing players to PC but they've already been porting everything to PC and that hasn't really hurt them, they're still selling tens of millions easily, because there's tens of millions who simply have no interest in the complexities of PC.

Sony owns the "casual" market now who just want a quick plug and play experience, folk who don't want to work around the complexities of PC Gaming, the millions who are entrenched in PlayStation's ecosystem via their built up digital libraries, they may lose some hardcore folk to PC but I don't think it will be a big number as long as PC Gaming remains expensive and more complicated.

I do see how it makes sense as Helldivers 2 is Sony's most popular multiplayer franchise, and its most dominant region, happens to be one of the few Xbox markets that they are still wildly competitive in.

But I just wouldn't underestimate how many players they can end up losing to PC. Its a growing market, and its actually one of the reasons I think Xbox really couldn't gain any traction in Europe this gen, despite having a low cost of entry machine like the Series S. Microsoft might not even reach 40M+ Xbox Series users, and if that 56M - 58M figure for Xbox One lifetime is accurate, they may have nearly lost 20M+ users already. And these are players who were already entrenched in their ecosystem with achievements, digital libraries, friends, etc.

I don't particularly think having a late, multiplayer port on Xbox would cause the same kind of damage, but I think following in Microsoft's footsteps going fully multiplatform, opening the door to day and date PC for everything, it will slowly erode their brand. They can still reach 100M+ hardware sales of course, but that will be the absolute high end. But honestly at this point, it is what it is, I'm getting older and just want to enjoy playing games the way I want to lol. I'll still be gaming on consoles until the very end.

Perhaps Microsoft wanted something in exchange for putting/keeping their games on Playstation, and Sony had to agree or risk losing popular games in the future. Time will tell.

The fact that Helldivers 2 releasing on Xbox the exact same day Gears of War: Reloaded is coming to PlayStation tells me this could potentially be the case. What's next? Halo for Spider-Man? lol

That'd be a weird quid-pro-quo to release on the same date though, Helldivers 2 and Gears of War will be directly competing with each other on Xbox, Lol. And I imagine they're going to plan something for the launch too which is game wide, like an event to celebrate its launch on Xbox, which could drown out Gears of War on PlayStation too, Lmao.

If anything I see them releasing on the same day as a negative thing

The hilarious take would be they're releasing them on the same date so that Xbox players are distracted by Helldivers 2 thus giving PlayStation players an actual chance with Gears MP because that shit is sweaty as fuck and a bunch of hardcore Xbox players who have been playing Gears all their lives are going to brutalise a bunch of new PlayStation players, Lmao.

That last theory is just a joke though.

Sony's made a distinction with live service games - with the expectation that they'll be on PC day 1, whereas their single player games do not have that expectation.

At least in the mid term, I expect that they'll continue to make that distinction with live service games on Xbox.

I was wondering what Nixxes was working on since this was the first time in a couple of years where they didn't have their next project already announced. Turns out, their next port would be on a completely different platform. They haven't worked on Xbox since porting Rise of the Tomb Raider to the 360 in 2015.

Sony would've been the ones to buy the Xbox development kits for Nixxes. They just gonna toss em now?

Helldivers 2 just got announced for Xbox. Coming August 26.

At this rate I wouldn't put it past Sony to release some of their major games on Switch 2 and further devalue the Playstation brand.

Marathon is releasing for Xbox, and that Gummy Bears game has been speculated to be multi platform.

At this point, releasing on Xbox is kind of empty. Before the implosion of the brand with these latest cuts, Xbox hardware was basically just going to be an Xbox themed PC.

Switch 2 will be interesting to see, but I imagine Soby will wait to see if it encroaches on their market place.

They'll be supporting the PC launch of Horizon online, and likely being the team that handles long term support on PS5 and PC.

Live Service games make sense to be in more platforms. Sony is also clearly letting games not developed directly by them go multiplat:

Lego Horizon, Death Stranding, Hot Shot Golf, Patapon...

Sony going the way of Microsoft right now would be such a major misfire, as they can essentially expand their console userbase by eating into Xbox, but I do wonder if there is more behind the scenes with this one.

They've hit a ceiling in terms of profit gain which is why they've started releasing outside of the Playstation ecosystem like Microsoft is with the Xbox ecosystem.

The two biggest ways they can increase their profit is by doing multiplatform releases and unfortunately cutting people's jobs (which Microsoft is doing both).

Its pretty much the worst aspect of capitalism and I can see more and more companies doing it on other markets/industries - Warner Brothers is already doing it cutting jobs and releasing their previously exclusive titles from HBO Max onto other services like Netflix.

Pretty much the ugliest side of capitalism (as far as people getting their jobs sacrificed).

I beat yet another annoying boss in Final Fantasy X HD on PS4.
While there could be another annoying boss coming up before then, I've heard the final boss is really tough. There's still a good amount of game left from what I've gathered.
