Being familiar with comparative politics, the same flaw exists in any variation of party-based democracies:Â Germany's neglect to address the immigration issues AfD brings up becuase "aaaah, imagined mustache man associations!" (even though the leader is an open lesbian); |
Alice Weidl being openly lesbian and yet she strongly supports legislation that would make gay marriage illegal in Germany. Why? Because she lives in Switzerland and thus wouldn't be affected at all from a ban in Germany.
Also, she wouldn't be the first gay leader in a nazi party. Ernst Röhm, the leader of the Sturmabteilung (SA, also known as brownshirts) and one of the leaders of the Nazi party, was gay. In fact, he was the first known gay politician.
Oh, and about the "imagined mustache man associations: Just look at the slogan they had for the general election. It was "Alice für Deutschland", which would translate directly into the innocuous "Alice for Germany". However, it's chosen for sounding almost exactly like "Alles für Deutschland", which means "Everything for Germany" and is a forbidden nazi slogan that Björn Höcke said several times and which directly led to him being replaced by Alice.
Also, keep in mind that other European Far-right parties like the National Rally in France, Chega! in Portugal, Fidesz in Hungary or Vlaams Belang in Belgium don't want the AFD in their European party group because it's too extreme even for them.
