Hmmmm I suspect Hogwarts did the same or higher digitally, no way 93,000 consoles were sold with no game….. it’s interesting would love to see digital numbers for all ps5 software to see the contrast, we know switch is physically heavy as an example.

Yeah PS5's digital splits in Japan are most likely in line with the UK, so about 50% for full games that have physical versions. But even with this and other explanations factored in (services, f2p, backwards compatibility, resellers, no mainline or new MH/DQ/FF), I feel that the numbers are low relative to how much the console is selling.

Demand should be met in no time unless software sales start to pick up.

Hogwarts Legacy digital should be higher than most if not all of PS4/PS5 games because of the digital deluxe edition 3 days early access and some extra stuff and only cost like $10 more than the standard edition

Software sales still stand in no relation to the actual hardware sales. Even at 90% digital sales, physical sales would be too low.

Weird to say this in the week a ps5 game is the best selling title.

That doesn't change the fact that up to this point the software attach rate of the PS5 is by far the lowest any console ever had in Japan even if it had an extremely high digital share.

That said with these big hardware drops recently the scalping issue should be mostly resolved and more people should be able to get their hands on a PS5 now.

Hence why Hogwarts Legacy apparently sold out of it's physical stock in it's first week and thus likely has a very good digital share. Retailers were catious with this one because of many previous PS5 games having issues to sell through their launch shipment. Harry Potter is very popular in Japan. It also seems like it has been restocked this week so it's second week drop should be favorable.

Subscription services like the 2 main tiers of PS Plus (Extra/Deluxe), Digital Games, F2P, and Sending some units to Mainland China are many reasons why the physical software is low on the charts.

Time will tell, but as OF NOW, PS5 surpassed the PS4 in Japan launch aligned.

Must be disappointing for Bandai Namco that One Piece Odyssey fell out of the top 30, while the Switch version of One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 somehow is able to creep in the top 30 almost 2 years after release.

And maybe even worse for Sony considering that despite a 90k week for the PS5 hardware, they still cannot get even a third of the top 30 in the software charts.

So guys it it pretty much guaranteed at this point that the Switch will become Japan's greatest selling console ever?

It has a legit shot at it. I don't think casual gamers will suddenly transition to the successor right away. Thus, the Switch will remain an entry point for consumers until Nintendo is ready to ultimately end production of the Switch. It would also depend on when the successor releases and what else releases outside of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4. Will cross gen be a thing between the Switch and the successor. If so, how long?

It's still 3.15m behind the NDS launch aligned and 4.73m behind the total. So it's not completely guaranteed but it seems very likely unless the drop this year is greater than expected or the Switch 2 launches before Holiday 2024.

The main thing that helps it is 3DS is about to release (launch aligned) and completely kill DS sales. If the Switch was given the same time as the DS before successor (Switch 2 launching June 8th 2023) it wouldn't stand a chance.

So yeah at this stage I'd give the Switch a 90% chance of beating the DS in Japan.

Harry Potter was actually pretty big in Asia as well. However, that was like 20 years ago when it first came out, and ever since Harry Potter pretty much ended years ago I feel as though the franchise hasn't seen too much light. In Europe and America, children are still recommended to read Harry Potter in schools and such so makes sense why the fanbase is still alive. Not the biggest sale numbers in Japan and probably the ROW, but with how big the sales are in Europe and most likely America, I think it easily passed 10m in its first week. Always nice to see excessive boycott activities helping the sales^^
