PS5 doubled its YTD sales compared to last year and sold 10 % of its lifetime sales in January!

Switch is 50 % down compared to last year. If this trend continues until May (Zelda), Nintendo should be worried.

I remember reading somewhere that the retailers in Japan were finally getting rid of the lottery system because they had enough stock so PS5 stock must be full in Japan. Well done, PS5, very happy to see it start getting some high numbers. Hope this is the first week of many 45k plus this year.

@ShadowLink93 I see you are doing a PS5 chart now, Nice. The total and unit labels are backwards btw.

Thanks, the mistake has now been corrected.

Ps5 winning in Japan
Guess that explains why all my notifications were blowing up.

So many threads which haven't spoken about Japanese sales since the switch's dominance began all came back from the grave all at once

Guess they were bored of seeing the Switch sell at an incredible pace while the PS4/5 were left in the dust in recent years?

Im not surprised that the PS5 outsold the Switch this week. Only the third time, since the PS5 launched, has that happened at this point. Will it keep it up we’ll have to see. But it’s hard to be so celebratory when the top 30 still shows a different story. PS software are still struggling to even get a third of the top 30 software charts.

PS5 needs compelling software for the Japanese audience to really turn the narrative around in Japan. Sure they’re more focused on the West, but the Switch shows that you can succeed in both Asia AND the rest of the world.

If Japanese developers (and that’s a BIG if) are able to bring more big budget software for the Switch successor, then the PS5 may have a hard time matching, or even surpassing, the PS4’s LTD hardware and software sales.

Sony really coming through with the increased stock. Same here in the US; Amazon, Best Buy and my local stores all have the GOW bundle readily available right now.

Lots of variables that will end up changing the figure of course, but Switch on its current trajectory is heading for just under 3.3-3.4 million for the year. That would be its lowest total (alongside the one for its first full year on the market), but still a remarkably high figure for a platform in its 7th year.

The DS, which is currently the best-selling platform in Japan, managed around 2.9 million in its 7th year for comparison.

If you look at it that way, then the DS's first year has consisted of only one month: December 2004. This in turn means that the DS sold 2.9m during the timespan from 5 years, 1 month old to 6 years, 1 month old. Not exactly the best comparison to Switch's timespan of 5 years, 10 months old to 6 years, 10 months old.

While still not perfect, it would be more appropriate to compare Switch's 2023 to the DS's 2011 which gives only a slight disadvantage to the DS instead of a big disadvantage to Switch in your proposed comparison. The DS sold 650k in 2011 which is a figure that Switch will likely eclipse by the end of week 10 of 2023. It goes to show how the launch of a successor or lack thereof influences a sales curve.

In the perfectly launch-aligned comparison that VGC posts every month, we are only a few months away from Switch starting to catch up rapidly to the DS's lifetime total. Switch's March 2023 vs. the DS's December 2010 will be the final strong competition for Switch. Still, the DS has built quite a lead in lifetime sales up to this point, so in case that Switch eventually surpasses the DS, it can happen in the second half of 2024 at the earliest.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

Not very good sales for Forspoken, considering it must have been quite expensive to make as a AAA current gen exclusive.

Disgaea 7 falls flat as well, roughly 16k week one compared to 39k for Disgaea 6, ouch.

Could the PS5 outsell the switch this year in japan?
Maybe 20% chance, it all depends if they can produce enough PS5's I guess

I see Ps5's are out of stock currently in japan

PS5 is currently averaging 47k a week, if it keeps that average over this 53 week year than that would mean sales of 2.49 million for 2023.
