9) Technically this is the oldest these iconic characters have ever been
Hint 2: The word ancient is also used a lot in this game

Shot in the dark here - Skyward Sword

No... but you're kind of halfway right.

7) My favorite DLC
Hint 2: First cutesy, then horror

6) The last three games in this series correspond to a different color each. This is the red one.
Hint 2: A famous detective is trying to catch you and your band of thieves.

7: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury?

6: Probably not but let's go with Professor Layton & The Diabolical Box (Pandora's Box depending on where you live), that one has reddish boxart.

7) No, but that does actually kind of fit

6) Nope, I've yet to play a Layton game, but wouldn't he be the detective in that scenario? Because in this game you play as the "thieves"

I guess my initial hints are generally too hard, let's see if these second ones will help:

10) It's every game ever created. It's Skyrim. It's Persona 3.
Hint 2: I picked this as my Game of the Year on Steam, but it's debatable whether it should qualify

9) Technically this is the oldest these iconic characters have ever been
Hint 2: The word ancient is also used a lot in this game

8) The unofficial return of a game and character I alluded to in my last batch of hints, but unfortunately they couldn't get the original voice actor onboard
Hint 2: Released in the same year as the long awaited sequel a VR spin-off.

7) My favorite DLC
Hint 2: First cutesy, then horror

6) The last three games in this series correspond to a different color each. This is the red one.
Hint 2: A famous detective is trying to catch you and your band of thieves.

#7: Doki Doki Literature Club

Right on. My favorite DLC is DDLC.

Well I might as well take the one shot I have: Trails in the Sky 2?

I also just realised Bowser's Fury wasn't actually DLC.

And oh lol yeah then it can't be Layton, fun series though, even if it gets a bit repetitive as you play more of the games.

Top 15!

#15 - You can buy cosmetic items celebrating the heroic duo of this game in another game made by the same developer.

#14 - Forget about Turtles in Time; this is Frog in Time.

#13 - A content aggregator linked on this website is named after a race introduced in this game.

#12 - Eight years after this game released it got two successors -- one a direct sequel and one a prequel that happens to be #11.

#11 - See above.

#13: Starcraft

Oh he meant that type of race. I feel like such an idiot now.

#32: Donkey Kong Country

I was a Nintendo Power subscriber in the 90s so I received a VHS promo tape for Donkey Kong Country (you can find it on YouTube nowadays), it promoted it's state of the art graphics made the latest 3D rendering techniques. Today, of course, there's nothing impressive about DKC's graphics (although it still looks great) but what is still remains is how fun the game is to play.

The game can be quite challenging at times but you also get plenty of lives thanks to the many bonus areas giving out bananas and balloons and the KONG letters scattered in each level. Each of the Kongs plays slightly differently with Diddy Kong being faster and Donkey Kong stronger. DKC was an effort by Nintendo to revitalize a forgotten mascot and they've done quite a fantastic job mixing the old and the new. Barrels are a recurring theme throughout the game allowing you to throw them at enemies (like DK did to Mario all those years ago), find your missing companion, unlock bonus areas, launch you in the air (or down a pit). The Kremlings (the game's enemies) have a lot of personality and each provide their own challenge.

All of this is accompanied by a wonderful soundtrack from David Wise which is among my favorites.

So, lesson learned: I shouldn't go to bed after posting a bunch of hints

Correct! #12 is Super Metroid, and #11 is Metroid Prime.

Chrono Trigger is right!

#13: Starcraft

StarCraft, indeed!

#31: Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

To be frank Diablo III sucked on release. Pitiful loot all geared to feed the online auction house, higher difficulty levels were a grind fest, end game content was boring. Thankfully, Reaper of Souls and many further update did fix all of this. Yes, it's not Diablo II but it's a very entertaining game where you can make a wide variety of fun builds with each character.

As always ranged characters are my go to in Diablo games so I often go for Demon Hunters or Wizards when starting a new season but I like most of the classes in D3 (maybe except the barbarian). What I like most in this game is building up my character from zero to total badass who clears Torment XVI rifts in 5 minutes. Once that is done, I move on to another character and another until I'm done for a while but I always come back.

#30: Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 was my introduction to this fantastic series and I have very fond memories of my time playing this game. From the first few tries where I got prompted killed by first few zombies in the street, to learning to weave around some zombies in an effort to conserve ammo , to clearing the game fast enough to unlock the infinite ammo guns. The game was tense, atmospheric and scary. The scary part didn't just come from the classic jump scares (although there's some good ones in there), some of the enemies would terrify me like the lickers (from their intro animation to how nasty they could be to fight, just hearing their sound filled me with dread.

There was a lot of replayability due to the fact that who you chose to play as first (Leon or Claire) would alter the events of the game. Unfolding the mystery of what happened in Raccoon City was intriguing and you met some great characters along the way (Ada Wong being a favorite of mine). I'm sure I'd have some trouble replaying it now with the tank controls but this game has a special place in my heart nonetheless.
