Xenoblade Chronicles 3: how Monolith Soft pushes its Switch technology to the next level | Eurogamer.net

"Improved visuals, animation and image quality are just the tip of the iceberg."

In a nutshell, image quality is greatly improved over Xenoblade 2 due to the introduction of Temporal Upsampling; native base resolution is still low, but the result is "a passable rendition of 1080p when docked and 720p in portable play."

Framerate is "mostly fine" but can drop when heavy action takes place in more complex environments, though due to the nature of the game, the impact on gameplay is "minimal."

I'm avoiding any more Xenoblade 3 footage until after I've played it, but I'm happy to see these impressions. Monolith Soft never disappoints.

Despite YouTube compression. I always felt it looked a lot better.

So we finally get a Xenoblade game that's able to achieve a docked resolution of over 1080p !

How do you equate a passable rendition of 1080p when docked” to “achieve a docked resolution of over 1080p !” ??

Smart upscaleing, if the native resolution is actually 540p, then upscaled it looks great.
This is kinda like DLSS or amd's FSR, it uses previous frames to upsample.

He mentions how big a upgrade it is visually compaired to last games, esp in handheld mode.

Until hardware limitations no longer have us trapped at a sub-50,000p resolution existence, I will be pausing my video gaming and stick to my old NES game library.

This is the way.

Definitely pushing the boundaries of what the Switch is capable of. When you only have 25GB/s of bandwidth holding your fillrate back, anything over 720P is a terrific effort.
I am excited to see how this franchise will look on next-gen Nintendo hardware... It's quickly becoming my favorite Nintendo franchise. (Step aside Zelda and Metroid!)

The Audio is glorious, it's absolutely stunning on my Yamaha home theater system.

Would it possible for them to patch other games to allow better resolution on handheld mode?

It looks like they've finally gone above 720p in docked mode for a Xenoblade game. That's nice for a change. I'm really looking forward to this game, and this is just the icing on the cake.
