Forums - Gaming - Has an achievement ever spoiled a game for you?

I feel like they have but I can't think of a specific one.

They do often take away from the gravity of certain moments, though. Like your best friend might die in some super sad way and while you're still drinking in the moment, you see "End of an Era +50pts" pop up on the screen.

I love achievements, though. I don't really go too far out of my way to get them but they make me feel like I've accomplished something.

It is very annoying when they pop off and make that damn noise right in the middle of an important cutscene. I hate that.

Spoiler!
giving Sayaka a second gift it said I completely filled our her page in the journal... And that only 3% or so of gamers have done that. So, this really didn't take that long, and so few people have done it... which could only mean, this girl is going to die very soon. Which is sad because I liked her.

Sure enough...

So, have achievements ever spoiled a game for you?

While I empathize with being disappointed about being spoiled, I do have a few observations to make:

1. I assume the only way to check achievement percentage is by actively looking at the achievement (like PS trophies). Just avoid doing this in the future and your problem is solved for the rest of your life :)

2. Danganronpa has only been out on Xbox for less than a week. Using an achievement percentage to assume story spoilers seems a little premature.

3. Danganronpa is a 12 year old game, with releases on the PSP, Vita, PS4, Steam, Smartphones, and Switch already. Good chance ppl who've already played the game are just doing another run through for nostalgia purposes and are just doing the minimum needed to finish the game.

Again, I empathize. But I honestly can't think of a single instance where any of my +6500 trophies actually spoiled anything.

1. Nope. The percentage will pop up with the achievement.

2. I'm not 100% sure how percentages work, but this was REALLY early in the game. And it's an incredibly easy achievement to get.

3. I would assume the purpose of making it available on a new platform is to attract new users to the series. If the majority of people are people who have played it already that's pretty odd. It's a pretty easy achievement to get which involves

Spoiler!
talking to a character one more time than you otherwise have to. And it's the one character you'll have been forced to interact with the most at that point, and really encouraged to build a relationship with.

I would also point out that my prediction on what would happen was spot on. So, it could be that I'm psychic, or just have really good intuition, but I think it's more likely that the achievement spelled it out for me.

Don't really need empathy, and I'm still enjoying the game a lot. Just curious if that had happened to anyone else.

I was going back and forth on whether or not I wanted to read the spoiler, because I wanted to understand the circumstances, but I may want to play that game.
Then I realized it's the first one, and I have played that one.

Though I think you could have described the scenario in a more vague way so people who are interested in how it happened but don't want to get spoiled can read it and understand anyway.
Removing the name of said character, and potentially the name of the game as well, and just describe its setting instead, etc.
Then say "If you want to know the name of the game, click the spoiler tag below" etc.

Anyway, I don't recall being spoiled by an achievement/trophy before.

I can see why you would reach that conclusion while looking at the "Completion among players" percentage though.
Though as Twintail pointed out, there could be other reasons for that. I know a bunch of people who buy games, boot them up for a few minutes, and then don't play them until months/years later. When you go through your friends Trophy lists and you see a bunch of 0% or 1% trophies, that's usually what that means.

Trophy notifications that appear on screen are probably always spoiler free for the person that unlocks them.

I guess looking into the percentage completion has the potential to influence your thinking. Though it requires you to actively search for it. So you could at least prevent it from happening again by not doing that until you beat the game.

I always err on the safe side when it comes to spoilers. I think it would become pretty obvious quickly into the game what I was on about. So, I decided not to say much. If it leads to less people understanding me, I'm ok with that.

Again though, I did not look for the percentage. It pops up automatically with the achievement on X-Box. And even without the percentage, I think I would have put two and two together.

Spoiler!
The game tells you to build relationships with characters. It either forces you or heavily suggests you try with Sayaka the first time. The second time, it tells you you filled out her data... So, if it only takes two conversations to do that, and one was thrust upon you, I think it's pretty obvious that Sayaka was not long for this world. Even without the percentage. But, the fact that so few people had talked to her a second time, despite how much of your interactions were with her, and how generally adorable she is, made it even more obvious she was going bye bye soon.

Story line achievements should always be set to "secret, play more to unlock"

If you go digging further than that, it's on you.

In a lot of games they are secret. Sometimes, they're not.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned you can omit the name of the game, so people can't figure out what you were talking about, even if they happen to be playing it.
And if they are curious and click the spoiler tag that reveals the name of the game (or potentially other specific details), it has the same effect as if they clicked the spoiler tag you have in your OP.

I think the circumstances of your situation can be important for the conversation. Or just so people can understand how this can happen.
Because I was very curious about that, so that I can potentially avoid it happening to me in the future. But I also didn't want to get spoiled in the process of finding out what happened.

I didn't know it showed the percentages like that on Xbox. I'm pretty sure you have to go into your trophy list on PS and click on it to see that.

If I had seen the percentage, I may have thought the same thing. Although there are some other possibilities, but I would probably at least have considered it.
Though without looking at the percentage, I'm not sure I would have suspected that outcome.
Because

Spoiler!
Iirc, this is very early in the game. And I believe that was the very first death. At that point I wouldn't have any appreciation for how the character interactions will work, or even if the story is linear. If your choices affect who dies next, then it's reasonable that everyone's journal can be filled out immediately. And even if your choices can't affect the outcome of the story, everyone's journal may only take two interactions to fill out just so you're less likely to miss the chance of doing it.

Maybe I could have written it differently, but I said what I said. If you want to edit my OP to something that you think would be spoiler free and get the point across, you have my permission.

Spoiler!
I think two conversations to fully unlock a characters bio would be really small for the type of game, based on how they described free time, and how many presents there are, how many coins you've gotten by that point etc. I could just be very smart, but I felt it was obvious.

Nah, it's not a problem, and it's your situation to share, so it's up to you if you want to share it without the spoilers attached or not.

And to be precise I didn't actually play the game, but I watched the anime, so

*Trigger Happy Havoc spoilers*

Spoiler!
I'm not sure how the journal system was presented at that point, as it didn't exist in the anime. But was it not plausible at that point to suspect that the story may branch depending on your choices, and it can lead to Person B dying instead of Person A? Since this was before anyone had died. And I have played some similar visual novel games where you can affect the order of who dies next.
Spoiler!
You know by that point that there are a lot of collectable presents, way more than would be needed if it was two convos a pop. More importantly though, by that time, you know there will be trials, and I can't imagine how they could make different trials throughout the game, based on who dies and who is alive at what point, and still have sensible conclusions. Maybe that's just a lack of imagination on my part, but it seems impossible.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Yes, I've had it happen with Playstation trophies that pop up too early and spoil something that's just about to happen more than once.

Try out my free game on Steam

2025 OpenCritic Prediction Leagues

I never read the trophy page so wouldn't even know what trophy i got. I play the game to play the game to finish it without worrying about trophies.

That sucks. Fortunately, I can assure you the game is just getting started. Trust me, while this spoiler seems like a big deal... in the grand scheme of things of this story it's next to nothing ^^
