Forums - Sales - Console launch sales comparison graphs

Switch is holding up strong compared to its predecessors and 2022 promises to be one of its strongest years in Japan to date. Will be interesting to see how that turns out.

As an added bonus going to start including total sales data for the consoles that aren't currently in graphs either, this will be under the "week 55 numbers" at the end. Here's how every tracked console stands after 55 weeks on the market.

Console Sales
Wii 16.62m
PS5 15.75m
PS4 15.48m
Switch 15.45m
3DS 14.58m
DS 10.81m
XSX 10.08m
PSP 9.66m
XBO 8.85m
X360 6.71m
PS3 6.64m

Switch has had some heavy adjustments, NPD adjustments are coming monday/tuesday and the new week should be around tuesday too, so I'll just wait until the next week of VGC figures to make all the changes.

The Wii was massive in it's first few years.

can you make PS2 (as much official info is given shipments or whatever) vs the DS graph ? just to see how it looks like.

Based mostly on the quarterly fiscal reports from Nintendo/Sony. The last official update for PS2 sales was a year before it was discontinued, while digging for data I came to the conclusion that PS2 sold at least 158.6m units lifetime, thread for how I came to this conclusion is here: PS2 shipments over 158.6m, breaking down missing fiscal data. (vgchartz.com)

The graph looks like a sharp uptick for ps2 at the end because I set the 158.6m figure on the same date production of the PS2 was discontinued, when shipped figures are given when they are shipped to retailer which is after the manufacturing date. For example, DS was discontinued at some point in 2013, but DS still shipped some more units after December 2013.

Switch numbers have received adjustments due to both Europe PR and NPD numbers for November. While Europe was good news, NPD was not.

Switch sales before adjustments = 97,116,492

Switch numbers after adjustments = 96,944,492

These numbers have been added, the only thing this affects in this topic is the DS vs Switch (Global) category.

Edit:

PS5/XSX adjustments are in

PS5 sales before adjustments = 15,748,022
PS5 sales after adjustments = 15,340,622

XSX sales before adjustments = 10,088,987
XSX sales after adjustments = 9,925,987

This means since VGC posted the first figures for BF week:

PS5 was adjusted down 408k
Switch was adjusted down 172k
XSX was adjusted down 163k

All relevant graphs and tables have been updated.

The PS5/XSX outperformed there predecessors until now, but due to the horrific stock situation they just can't possibly meet the demands of a holiday season. Neither PlayStation or MS are in a position where they can supply enough to hit almost 1m weeks. PS5 will undoubtedly suffer the most against the PS4's terrific first holiday sales. All PS5 can hope to do is keep the damage as low as possible but it will be high, and attempt to recover the lost ground this holiday in the next year... and hope there isn't a repeat in Holiday 2022.

Xbox Series continues to be outsold by it's predecessors, both XBO and 360 sold more in their equivalent weeks. But thankfully Xbox Series has built a substantial lead over the XBO so will have no trouble staying ahead even if the gap is shrinking.

Updated with latest Japan numbers. PS5/XSX continue to have no stock, for whatever reason both companies have abandoned shipments to Japan for the holiday season.

IMO, this really just puts into perspective how poorly Xbox always has and likely always will sell in Japan. Four out of five of the worst selling consoles (that are listed here) after 58 weeks are Xbox. I do not know how MS could really improve their circumstances there.
