PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison - October 2021

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 264,413 - PS5

Total Lead: 658,319 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 13,869,005

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 13,210,686

October 2021 is the 12th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 264,413 units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 658,319 units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 13.87 million units in 12 months, while the PlayStation 4 sold 13.21 million units. Month 12 for the PlayStation 5 is October 2021 and for the PlayStation 4 is October 2014.

The PlayStation 4 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 13 when it sold 15.47 million units.

The PlayStation 4 crossed 20 million in month 17, 30 million in month 25, and 40 million in month 31. The PlayStation 4 has sold 116.61 million units to date.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox One Sales Comparison - October 2021

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the Xbox One launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

XSX|S Vs. XOne Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 400,699 - XSX|S

Total Lead: 2,023,587 - XSX|S

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 8,427,936

Xbox One Total Sales: 6,404,349

October 2021 is the 12th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox Series X|S when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox One by 400,699 units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently ahead by 2.02 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 8.43 million units in 12 months, while the Xbox One sold 6.40 million units. Month 12 for the Xbox Series X|S is October 2021 and for the Xbox One is October 2014.

The Xbox One did not reach current Xbox Series X|S sales until month 14 when it sold 10.30 million units.

The Xbox One crossed 10 million units sold in month 14, 20 million in month 30, and 30 million in month 48. The Xbox One has sold 50.45 million units to date.

Nice to see XS still charting comfortably ahead of Xbone even under supply constraints. Will be interesting to see how it goes this Christmas; the Series S is the only 9th gen home console easily available, will that serve in well in the holiday rush, or do people just not want it?

PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S Sales Comparison - October 2021

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S both launched in November 2020. The PlayStation 5 launched November 12, 2020 in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, and the rest of the world on November 19, 2020. The Xbox Series X|S launched worldwide on November 10, 2020.

PS5 Vs. XSX|S Worldwide:

Gap change in latest month: 524,052 - PS5

Total Lead: 5,441,069 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 13,869,005

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 8,427,936

October 2021 is the 12th month the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 524,052 units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 5.44 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 13.87 million units in six months, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 8.43 million units.

The PlayStation 5 is currently 0.66 million units ahead of the PlayStation 4 when you align launches and the Xbox Series X|S is ahead of the Xbox One by 2.02 million units.

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S vs PS4 and Xbox One Sales Comparison - October 2021

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The 12th month for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S is October 2021, while for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One it is October 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for all four consoles are lined up.

Gap change in latest month: 665,112 - PS5 & XSX|S

Total Lead: 2,681,906 - PS5 & XSX|S

Total Combined PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Sales: 22,296,941

Total Combined PS4 and Xbox One Sales: 19,615,035

In October 2021, the gap grew in favor of the combined sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the last month by 665,112 units. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S lead by a combined 2.68 million units.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in their first 12 months sold a combined 22.30 million units, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 19.62 million units. It took until month 13 for the PS4 and Xbox One to sell as many units as the current PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sales.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 167.05 million units after 96 months.

We have PS4 and Xbox One sales at 28.48 million at the end of December 2014. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S needs to sell about 6.2 million to stay ahead over the next 2 months.

Normally I'd say that'd be easily doable, but with the supply situation the way it is, who knows.

Yeah hard to say. There was plenty of stock of PS4s and Xbox Ones heading into the 2014 holiday season. While we know how hard it is to find a PS5 or Xbox Series X.

But we know that Sony is still confident to be able to match the PS4's shipment pace while Microsoft has had no problem to ship more current Xboxes than of the Xbox One a generation ago.

So I don't see any good reason why stock should be a problem in this comparison.
