Switch vs Wii Sales Comparison - Switch Takes the Lead in December 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii.

Switch Vs. Wii Global:

Gap change in latest month: 5,425,402 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 7,824,826 - Switch

Total Lead: 4,512,172 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 76,989,289

Wii Total Sales: 72,477,117

December 2020 is the 46th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the Switch closed the gap by 5.43 million units and gained the lead when you align the launches of the two consoles. In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 7.82 million units. The Wii is currently ahead of the Switch by 4.51 million units.

The Wii launched in November 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

The 46th month for the Nintendo Switch is December 2020 and for the Wii it is August 2010. The Switch has sold 76.99 million units, while the Wii sold 72.48 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 50.

The Wii sold 101.63 million units worldwide during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 24.64 million units to outsell the Wii.

Boom.

Now to see if it can stay ahead once it aligns with Wii's 2010 holiday season. Switch will easily win in the long run thanks to longer legs and a stronger presence in Japan and ROTW. In fact, if the Switch has another very strong year, it could pass Wii's lifetime sales by 2022.

PS4 and Xbox One vs PS3 and Xbox 360 Sales Comparison - December 2020

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Gap change in latest month: 3,060,402 - PS3 & X360

Gap change over last 12 months: 7,039,089 - PS3 & X360

Total Lead: 7,302,382 - PS4 & XOne

Total Combined PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Sales: 156,964,136

Total Combined PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Sales: 164,266,518

In December 2020, the gap grew in favor of the combined sales of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the last month by 3.06 million units. In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have caught up by 7.04 million units. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One lead by a combined 7.30 million units.

The 86th month for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is December 2020, while for the Xbox 360 it is December 2012 and for the PlayStation 3 it is December 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for all four consoles are lined up.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in their first 86 months sold a combined 156.96 million units, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 164.27 million units. It took until month 97 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 to sell as many units as the current PS4 and Xbox One sales.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sold a combined 173.22 million units lifetime. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are currently 8.95 million units away from surpassing the PS3 and X360.

This one is looking to be closer than I anticipated with PS4/Xbone looking to be falling off unexpectedly fast. A few months ago I would've said PS4 alone could make up the difference but now I'm not so sure.

Gap change over last 12 months: 19,375,246 - Switch

Total Lead: 28,395,562 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 76,989,289

The 3DS launched in February 2011 (however, 3DS sales have been aligned to March 2011, since it only launched at the end of February in Japan), while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. This does mean the holidays for the two platforms do lineup.

The 46th month for the Nintendo Switch is December 2020 and for the Nintendo 3DS it is December 2014. The Switch has sold 76.99 million units, while the 3DS sold 48.59 million units during the same timeframe.

Well, there it is.

It's been fun watching this gap close, especially so quickly in recent months. Onto PSP and GBA.

The Switch keeping up with the DS is a very good sign for things to come.

Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - Switch Catches Up by Over 4M in December 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 4,379,270 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 152,728 - DS

Total Lead: 1,175,123 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 76,989,289

DS Total Sales: 78,164,412

December 2020 is the 55th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 4.38 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe. In the last 12 months, the DS has outsold the Switch by only 152,728 units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 1.18 million units.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

The 46th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is December 2020, while for the DS it is August 2008. The Switch has sold 76.99 million units, while the DS sold 76.18 million units during the same timeframe. The DS reached current Switch sales in month 46.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 77.03 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

All the Switch needs to do is to keep pace with the DS at this point which it is doing.  DS's legs drop quickly at a certain point.  All Switch needs to do is keep its legs decent and it will outsell the DS in the long run.

Also, I've gotta say that I've read both the first and third paragraph and I'm not sure what they are saying exactly.  They seem like they are saying the same thing, but they have different numbers.  (Different # of months and different total for the DS.)

2008 was DS's biggest holiday, to keep pace with DS Switch will need to sell 29 million this year, it's do-able but I'm still expecting it to fall short of DS overall (140m range)

I think the month number on the first paragraph is a typo, it's meant to be 46 not 55, while the 3rd paragraph is another typo, it's meant to say "DS sold 78.16" but he swapped the 8 & 6.

Switch just being 1.18 million behind DS during it's monstrous prime is just insane.

You are neglecting what has already happened.  Gap change for the past 12 months is 152,728 - DS.  That is statistically insignificant when systems are selling 28m+ a year.  Even if Switch falls a few million behind in the next 12 months, then it is not too big of a deal, because Switch has already been keeping up this long.  DS legs fall apart pretty quickly after this next big year.  Switch just needs better legs (which is pretty easy) and it will outsell the DS in the long run.  Switch sales have already done most of the hard work.
