This will be the worst year for Playstation hardware in Japan since the release year of the PS1.
Less than one million consoles sold in the calendar year, next week won't be enough to reach that.

Ouch.

Playstation as a brand is really not healthy in Japan, it hasn't been since the PSP era. PS5 will face a tough fight just to stay relevant in the face of Switch's dominance.

Chart time.

2020 data is ofc not finished yet and everything before 1997 is hard to find data that is why its mostly missing.

Hardware manufacturer yearly sales in Japan, everything combined.

NINTENDO

SONY

MICROSOFT

All thirds have the same data. And look this and, and Harada, Nagoshi, etc: put all resources, not on the market leader.

Sony will have a grim future in the Japanese market.

The future of Playstation in the Japanese market is gonna be interesting for sure, they are on a massive decline over there as Nintendo's marketshare continues to grow. Plenty of Japanese developers/publishers like Koei Tecmo, NIS, Marvelous are treating the Switch as a sort of Vita successor by at least most of their titles for the system. They are even getting their games like Disgaea 6 and Ryza 2 reveal during directs despite their series much longer history with Playstation. Even loyal third parties developers like Falcom have licensing out almost every game they made for the last 5 or so years to get a Switch port. Sony needs to do something about their hardware and software sales in Japan otherwise they might actually end up in a situation in a just a couple years where a lot of loyal third party Japanese developers either go full multiplat or worse for Sony full on Nintendo exclusivity.

Loses the Japanese market maybe result in loss of all Asian Market.

I'd have said otherwise, considering the straglehold sony had even when the ds/wii/wiiU/3ds dominated in japan.

but now..? yeah they're just going to lose asia at this rate.

At least in this quarter of the world, sony flubbing vita was the killing blow to thier marketshare.

especially when they made this happen in the first place, asians started to see that a home console is unnessisary becasue the psp existed, and now who's reaping the benefits?

Sony is DOOMED.

Nintendo gaining a lot of ground in China faster then Sony is definitely just as interesting as the situation in Japan. Sony has made some hard pushes into China such as the China Hero Project which has Sony provide additional funding for games over there, biggest one by far being Genshin Impact and yet Sony's funding was only enough time console exclusivity as it is getting a Switch port some time in 2021. But Nintendo choosing to partner with Tencent with the Switch release over there likely given them a massive edge due to that being Tencent's home turf.

Don't put all of Asia into the same basket.
The markets have their differences.

Nintendo is ahead in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan

China is a very hard market to get into and has lots of opportunities for every manufacturer.

Sony has a very strong hold on the middle east. Everything from Turkey to India and down to Yemen.

Sony has upper hand only in the middle east and India.

turkey is Europe, man.

Loses Japan, second-biggest market will have consequences.

When have DS/3Ds sony have good sales combining, psp/ps3 or ps3/ps4/vita pipeline. Now this production, mid games, migrated or multiplatform scene with Switch. The PlayStation brand does not sell 1 million consoles in one year.
