their game is second party because it is not solely mario. all games which involve mario in a big way (ie this game) are tied to nintendo because thats how nintendo does it. mario cameos dont make it a first party. it also isnt just a mario game. what systems is this coincidently coming out for? ds and wii.
It looks great, and IMO is the most promising PS3 title to date.
I think it will do pretty well - but will depend on:
1/ How well Sony markets it (I think they will go crazy with it)
2/ When it is released (middle of "great" titles, may be swamped)
3/ How buggy / polished final version is
...
It should do a million units WW easily - but not sure if it will hit 2m. If it does, it should be considered a huge success (for a new IP).

Mario & Sonic is obviously a special case. Not many games get "joint" development between two major studios.
I consider this a 1st-party Nintendo title - as they are (partially) developing it, AND publishing it. No such thing as a 1st-party Sega title anymore. Sega is joint developing & joint publishing.
All "Mario" games are either 1st or 2nd party titles. 1st if Nintendo internally develop it, 2nd if they pay another company to develop it.

bungie and naughty dog are not second party! they are wholly owned by their respective console manufacturers. do you still consider rare a second party?
