That is a very dangerous thing to postulate. (The bandwidth in the Series S is perfectly ok, though). I've seen several posts that go the way of "If you only have 1/4th the resolution, you only need 1/4th of the ram". Apart from being wrong, the memory capacity in the Series S is the main concern voiced by developers all around the world, and for a good reason. Ram isn't easily scalable. You can decrease texture size and geometry data for sure. That is half? a third? of the memory The ssd doesn't really help either. Ssds are good for streaming, but there still is boatloads of data you need in memory, all the time. Raytracing is the buzzword now. Want rt? You need the data structures in ram. Want better shadows? You need much bigger cache in ram. Want better lighting? You need bigger data structures in ram. Want better AI? Need bigger game code and data in ram. Want other stuff I forgot to mention? You need all the data structures in ram. Let's make it very clear: If you have to support Series S, the other consoles WILL pay the price for it. |
Im ignorant on the subject but apart from AI, all those things can be just turnd on and off easily correct? The other consokes do no need to oay for it. You just make the series S version run with no rt, no detailed shadows and with lower resolution on textures. Like running a game on medium or high setup on pc.

Man, MS really dodged a bullet thanks to the leaks. That would have been such a boring way to reveal Series S, far too much talking. The way they were forced to reveal it after the leaks was way better. |
I 100% agree with you. this presentation is extremely boring and they have nothing new to show on gameplay. The leak was a blessing for then and i hope they will discard this presentation, or just post it on youtube as a minor thing.

I can't help but feel the leak was controlled because of how incredibly dull these videos are. If not, the leaker helped MS out. |
i'm with you, these leaks are much better thans this dull reveal.

For their sake I hope they wont go that route. They promised that the only downgrade would be resolution. If that's the case they are gona need to run at 1080p. Or fans would be upset. That ram was a mistake.
It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.
The price for the series S is superb, however I feel that the specs have been cut far too much in order to meet that price.
MS have been really clever in having the highest spec sku (series X) and what will likely be the cheapest one in the series S.
However, it will be really interesting to see how the series S does. Most gamers who generally purchase games digitally would, I assume, potentially still want to have the option of an optical drive in case they manage to get good deals for physical games, or if they are sharing games with friends. And going discless would exclude this. Additionally I notice the lower storage for the series S. As someone who has a 500gb ps4, I am already having issues with storage and surely this will be a factor (yes I am sure you can expand storage but still).
I guess, ultimately, if the ps5 price is higher than series S as we expect, we will be able to get a good idea of how much of an effect, the perceived Sony exclusive games advantage affects sales of the xbox series and ps5.

The Price of the Series S is to high, when compared to the X or Series X.
The X has 1 TB, HD BluRay, and comparable graphic power, for 299€.
For 499€ of the series X, you get 3x graphic power plus HD BluRay and bigger SSD.
And in the next 3 years, all next gen games will also release for the current gen. Maybe except a few games.

No, they won't.

The SSD in the XSS is substantially better than the HDD. The only thing missing out is the blu-ray, instead the XSS has a better CPU. Aside from some clearances and used consoles, XOX has mostly been selling for $399/399€. |
In Germany you could get the XBox One X all year below 300€.
The user base of the next gen will be way to low in the first couple of years.
The publisher can’t afford to ignore the 160 million current systems.

Plenty of games won't be though. |
This is MS attempting to kill two or more birds with one stone.
Most thought based on the XBSX specs that it was certainly worth more than $500, and even though many thought charging more than $500 was asking for trouble, when finding out the price was going to be $500, everyone was pleased with that price. Added to this, you have XBSS, which isn't too far of what it should cost. I do believe XBSX is being subbed more so than XBSS, which is why it clearly seems to have the better value. This way, MS is making a reasonable offer to everyone who wants one of these consoles, while also convincing some to purchase the more expensive model because of it's perceived value.
The more balanced the sales between both consoles, the more reason for devs to properly support both. If XBSS outsells XBSX like 5:1, then devs won't want to spend as much time making use of every drop of performance the XBSX can offer due to it's much smaller user base. MS doesn't want that to happen because then XBSX owners will feel cheated. MS wants to up sell people to XBSX as much as they can to maintain as close to a balanced user base per console as possible. Now odds are quite good that XBSS will sell more period, but that's something you just can't get around. MS just has to try and make sure sales are as even as they can be, without upsetting people that one is way to good of a deal vs the other, which isn't easy either.
This also get's used against SNY. If you want the cheapest option available, it's XBSS, period. MS wins that battle. If you want the most powerful (on paper), it's XBSX. MS wins that battle. If you want something in the middle like PS5 DE likely, MS has little pull in that situation. SNY wins that battle. If you want a disc console, well for slightly more or the same price, why not get the most powerful (on paper) console on the market? MS will have a decent argument here but it will still be a toss up.
Now there's plenty of other things to consider like services and exclusives, etc, but in terms of hardware, MS has set things up so that to the hardcore spec gamer, and casual gamer, it's supposed to be a no brainer to buy an XB. We'll see how well it works out.
PS1 - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.
PS2 - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.
PS3 - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.
PS4 - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.
PRO -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.
PS5 - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.
PRO -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
