I think Capcom is going to focus on Resident evil, monster hunter, devil may cry which did very well and pretty much saved Campcom. I also think they will abondon games/genres which are doing poorly like street fighter, which iconic as it is, is pretty much dead. Some employees are probably not too happy about that. But SF V didn't sell well at all.

I don't think it's very likely we'll get a generation without a new Street Fighter. At worst, they only focus on one fighting game (SFVI) the entire generation, but they wouldn't abandon the entire genre. If anything, what's more likely to happen is they mostly focus on Street Fighter throughout the gen, then release like a revival of a smaller fighting game IP towards the end of the generation if they have enough confidence in their fighting game division.

Yeah, Street Fighter is still by far the biggest name in fighting games. There's no way they just suddenly abandon it lol.

Marvel vs. Capcom is likely on hiatus though. Which is a shame. MvC3, while nowhere as good as the classic MvC2, was honestly still a lot of fun, and especially great for tournaments. For years in tournaments it was often the hypest event of the day. MvCI was a complete dud.

This is big news. I can't imagine Capcom just skipping over the entire Fighting genre next generation, since even SFV sold great numbers (4.5 million) lifetime despite a bad start, but I'm guessing any projects they currently have in that genre are being delayed at very least.

This is not to say Capcom won't be focusing on Monster Hunter and Resident Evil. Those will obviously be the priority. But Street Fighter is in third or fourth place as far as their priorities go, depending on what they decide regarding Devil May Cry.

It seems like it may. But if Ono was replaced as head of Street Fighter in September 2018 by Ryozo Tsujimoto, then it's a bit harder to imagine Ono would be responsible for the SF6 delay (which seems to have been decided on recently given the release window for the Season 5 characters indicate it was a recent decision.) If Ryozo Tsujimoto was in charge since late 2018, he'd have c.a. 2,5 years to course correct SF6 before it's seemingly indicated release date (early 2021, judging by the Capcom Cup announcement that the champion from 2020 will not auto qualify for 2021. Which only happened once before when Kazunoko won in USF4 in 2015, because SFV would replace it on the tour next year.).

He wasn't replaced as head of SF he was replaced as head of a development division 2 which is different from being a game's director or producer, the replacement of CDD2's leadership was likely due to Tsujimoto's success with MHW which released in Jan 2018 plus he's is Capcom's founder's son as well. CDD2 houses Marvel, SF and games with online elements so even games like Resident Evil Resistance would be developed there, a reshuffle like this doesn't put Tsujimoto in charge of the game's development in anyway he'd only step in if something was going wrong and such a project like this would have already been in development before he became head of CDD2.

I don’t think you can even argue that SF is the biggest name in fighting games anymore, at least outside of a small enthusiast community. In real numbers, that would be Super Smash Bros. Mortal Kombat 11 and Tekken 7 also both did better than SF 5. That’s what Capcom cares about. The company as a whole has been enjoying a renaissance that Street Fighter completely missed.

Maybe don't pull exclusivity crap next time around?.

I've not been interested in SF since IV, and with what I saw with V I decided to hop off that train.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Good luck to the guy. I wasn't a big fan of SFIV but he put competitive fighters back into the scene in PS3/360 days._

Hope he finds his way back on his feet, Ono seems like a legitimately nice person.

In September 2018, Ono was reportedly no longer in charge of Division 2 (which makes fighting games like Street Fighter and Marvel Versus Capcom), and was replaced by Ryozo Tsujimoto (Monster Hunter producer).
That might have been what made Ono plan to leave Capcom, or retire.

Plot thickins - Tsujimoto is the the son of the current CEO and brother of the president.

I'm thinking that CAPCOM is pushing the vets out of top positions in favor of younger fresher developers.

Street Fighter V has sold over 4 mill overtaking vanilla Street Fighter IV and has become the 3rd best selling Street Fighter game. This on top of the fact that SONY paid for the development of game as well. Nothing but money for CAPCOM.

SFV fucked up so badly. I will never touch this series again. SFV launched in such a terrible state and how they handled the DLC and fight money they can go fuck themselves. I don't trust their FG's anymore. SFV is trash in how it's set up. MVCI is just straight up a garbage game.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

What will be Ono's next move?

Bamco or Indie Street Fighter? Combo of both?

And if SF6 is exclusive without him you still gonna blame his departure on a Capcom agreed exclusivity deal for SF5?

The deal was garbage either way, him leaving shows there's more of an issue going on with Capcom. Unless you want to cite him as being the garbage one, but going by his record, I wouldn't call him as such.
