Of course people like yourself dress it up better. No way would any hater admit Xbox has (gasp) too many games. No...it’s far easier to side step that that pivot to “Too much CG no gameplay”. It allows their narrative to be preserved that Xbox games are still not here yet and thus the window to bash them has widened.

Yet at the same time the “Halo Gears Forza” narrative is dead as we now see healthy variety of IPs. The Xbox “mid-late gen droughts” narrative is now dead because logically if we see CG trailers now that means they releasing in the next 2-3 years. Steady, yearly support confirmed.

But of course we can’t talk about that. No what’s important is finding the next big narrative push. Funny thing is that the newest narrative “Xbox trailers all CG no gameplay” is a temporary narrative...gameplay is inevitable. What will the next narrative be I wonder?

Edit: I mean there’s always the anti-GP narrative, but I always laughed at that. Advocating saving money and value is bad and spending more is good for gamers gives me a chuckle every time.

ZE MENTAL GYMNASTICS! ZEY'RE OLYMPIC!

Seriously, dude. How could you even pretend otherwise? The greatest narrative about Xbox's slump has been that they have no games, be they quality or quantity. I posted many times the in-depth analysis about how many PlayStation and Nintendo exclusives we're getting every year vs how many Xbox is having. and despite all that, they keep showing dozens of exclusives...yet nobody remembers any of them and none of them get good reviews. Every E3 they tout all this exclusivity, all these games, all these studios (even before the acquisition of 15 new studios) and all of that means nothing becuase we're not getting anything that's worthwhile. 2-3 games a year, tops, since 2017. Even before then, they were being outclassed in quality and quantity both.

I'm not sidestepping anything, I'm not massaging any narratives, I'm not complaining JUST about CG trailers (Hell, I've made it clear that the Sony presentation had too many cinematic trailers as well), the difference is legacy. Microsoft has been touting all these games and ideas and not delivering on any of the promises, while Sony has. THAT is why they failed, THAT is why their presentation was poor. THAT was why most people agree that Sony's lineup looks better even though, on paper, Xbox has a greater number of exclusives. It's because we all know better. Everyone but you seems to know better than to trust Microsoft's PR department. Everyone knows that when it's all said and done and all the cards are laid down, most of these will either be shit, boring, or not exclusive.

I would genuinely love to be wrong, but I can't just erase the entirety of the last generation to fuel your desired narrative. I want Xbox to succeed, but nothing in the past 7 years has given me that faith. You say it's  a 'temporary narrative', but it's been going on for the better part of the decade.

If you like Forza and Gears and Halo, that's fine. If you like ReCore and Sunset Overdrive, that's also fine. If you love State of Decay and Crackdown and Sea of Thieves, I'm genuinely happy for you.

But don't pretend that it's enough to carry a brand. Don't act like I'm strange or that most people here are 'just haters' for not feeling that's enough. It's not. There's not enough variety, there's not enough quality, and there's not enough quantity. Xbox's output has been shiiiiiite for the better part of a decade and I'm not gonna pretend otherwise just so I don't look biased. By every metric, Microsoft hasn't been doing well and this presentation has done nothing to convince me otherwise. More promises, more 'WORLD PREMIERE's, more tenuous grasps of exclusivity, and more lacklustre outings from franchises that stopped being interesting or unique 2-3 entries ago.

And then there's Fable. I want to like Fable. I want to be excited for Fable. It's right up my alley. I love fantasy RPG hack and slash games. the first Fable was MINT. the second was okay. the third was pretty bad. the fourth (The journey) was terrible. That pattern is trending downward. A CG trailer that tells us nothing about the game except that it exists is not enough to get me excited for the return of a franchise that's been slowly going down in quality with each subsequent entry. I can't get excited about Everwild becuase even though Rare is a legendary developer, they haven't done anything iconic or memorable since Banjo Tooie. There's all this potential, but nothing in this presentation gives me the impression that these games will reach that potential.

You keep acting like I'm 'just a hater' or something, but in reality I'm just super critical and no longer buying into the buzz after being burned dozens of times. If you think I'm not equally critical of Sony, you're allowed to be wrong about that. I hate just as much about Sony's output as I do Microsofts, but they have so much more going for them that even if I hate both brands equally there's still a tonne more to love. I hate racing games, so I don't give a shit about Forza OR Gran Turismo. However, Forza comprises like 50% of the top rated and top selling games on XBox but only like 3 or 4 games out of dozens of PS4. I don't care for First Person or Third Person shooters, so I don't give a shit about Halo or Gears or Killzone or *GASP!* even Uncharted! I don't care for any of these franchises. they're all fine and they all have entries I do like, but overall...meh. I could ignore them entirely and not miss a beat. while this still only accounts for a handful of Sony's output, it's effectively 40% of the remaining of Xbox's output.

Even if Ihate FPS games, Sports games, TPS games, and Racing games (Cutting out stuff like Gran Turismo, MLB The Show, Killzone, Resistance, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and DriveClub), that still leaves me with dozens more games and franchises I love in genres I adore. I still get stuff like Ratchet & Clank (action platformer), Bloodborne (Action RPG), God of War (Fantasy Action), Spider-Man (Superhero), Horizon Zero Dawn (Open World Adventure), Ghost of Tsushima (Samurai Adventure), and so many others. If I cut out the same amount from both consoles, it leaves Xbox with I guess Rare Replay and Sunset Overdrive, but Sony with literally dozens to chose from. And that's not even including Third party support like Nioh, Persona, Nier (which did eventually come to Xbox and might be exclusive in the future), Demon's Souls, and many more.

You need to quit with this 'oh you're just a hater' nonsense. It doesn't matter if I'm coming from an objective or subjective perspective, Xbox is not doing well and this presentation hasn't changed that. The numbers don't like. the sales don't lie. the volume of games on the system doesn't lie. the metacritic scores don't lie. all subjective ways to assess their success, and by all means they're going down and getting worse. and, ignoring all that, Sony just has SO much more to offer. Even if you cancel out genres and franchises 1:1 in an attempt to be fair on both sides (Removing Halo and Killzone, removing Uncharted and Gears of War, etc as first and third person shooters, respectively), Sony just has so much more in terms of variety, quality, and quantity.

THAT is why this presentation needed gameplay. THAT is why we needed more information. When we're talking about new IP, a cinematic trailer tells us nothing. it doesn't tell us anything but the art direction, title, and dev team behind it. Everwild could be a base builder sim. It could be an action RPG. It could be a third person shooter. We don't know. Hell, if reports are to be believed, Rare isn't even 100% sure what the gameplay is yet!

So cut it out. I'm being very reasonable with my arguments. Just because my rationale led me to not like something that you like doesn't mean I'm wrong or that I'm only being a hater. I am biased (literally everyone is to some extent), but it's only after decades of experience with the two companies in question.

And yes, I think it's important to compare and contrast the Xbox and PS5 conferences. they largely market to the same group, had similar lengths, had similar tones, and are coming out the same year.

I know you can make it shorter. I know you can. I don’t need to know your childhood life moments that made you the gamer you are today. Just tell me your point of view.

Edit: I read it...just you talking about how Xbox game droughts made you jaded and having no optimism now. How PS bangers draw you to the brand while the Xbox trinity doesn’t appeal to you. See? See how short I condensed it? Please do that next time.

Told you why I prefer Xbox. The misteps aren’t lost on me. To be what redeemed Xbox was Xbox X power (listening to fans about Xbox 1 lacking power). Game Pass being the most insane value deal in gaming. And their consumer focused BC program that goes back to OG Xbox. I occasionally like to go back to experience gems I missed out. Like I played Alan Wake and Ninja Gaiden 2 this year, and I’m glad I was able to. Xbox also does multiplayer games very well since most PS exclusives don’t even have MP. Just telling you people can prefer Xbox to your viewpoint and have their reasons.

Otherwise I guess I’m gonna be that guy to tell you to keep waiting. At least we can say their IPs have variety now and game droughts are a thing of the past given what we’ve seen will be spaced out some way. A lot of their games may be too small or not enough budget for your liking, but the games and variety are coming as early as this year. Id be happy to show a years end comparison between Ps and Xbox Studios. A gen over gen improvement to be sure regardless.

In the end we have progress. If the narrative is “Xbox has games but it’s all CG” then perfect. It’s a temporary narrative because gameplay is inevitable. And not like there won’t be any more announcements between now and years end. Your stance is simply too harsh despite your reasoning, which yes can attribute to generalizing you as yet another hater.

That’s my point, write less. You had a lot of fluff. It’s not intuitive to respond from a phone, to respond to every little point you make. And ironic considering you didn’t respond to my thoughts given how much less I wrote back.

Look at that, I’m curious what you think. The top 3 rows (15 games) are all from Xbox Studios. That’s not even all the games they have cooking and only what’s official. Tell me when Xbox ever had 15 games in development...I’ll wait. You don’t have to be a business insider to see next gen won’t repeat the same mistakes of Xbox One, nor the late gen game droughts of 360.

Then you have the timed exclusives, and let’s be honest if PS fans can brag about FF7 timed then we can do the same.

Then you have the fact that all 24 games on that picture....again TWENTY FOUR, are all DAY 1 GamePass. I can’t stress enough how insane that value is. For GP Ultimate you merely need to play 3 full priced games a year to break even. Please let that sink in how pro consumer this is. How this is a major selling point compared to PS. How even if you prefer PS to Xbox you will be paying more and playing less then me using GP. Please stop and consider that.

Cant stress enough how Xbox has never been in this position regarding games and value to gamers. Never.

Halo Infinite in all honesty looks fine for me (the 4k demo). It is obvious that game was made for xbox one, but they tweaked it for xbox one series x. I'm just glad it is 4k/60 fps and going back to the original trilogy style. Don't get me wrong, I liked Halo 4/5 overall, but I didn't like the visual style as much because it focus too much on tech and not enough nature imo. Halo Infinite, Everwild and crossfire interest me the most.

Its weird that you still don't see the downsides of GP after that Halo reveal. I hope you now at least realize that scalable graphics don't really work as Phil Spencer made it out to be.

Like I been saying for months. GP is great and offers amazing value, but there are some major drawbacks when it comes at the expense of supporting and selling their next gen console. For the second time we've now seen that it'll be hard to really take full advantage of the Series X hardware. But more importantly, GP probably wouldn't work with high budget AAA games that typically take 3 to 5 years to make. The GP business model strives on A/AA titles and a quantity over quality approach. Games that bombed, both in critical acclaim and at at retail, are now valuable GP filler for MS and they need a lot of them to keep people subscribed.

The truth is that from half the games you mentioned, we have no idea what they are and when they will be coming out. It could be 4 years from now before we see Fable or Avowed, and even then we have no idea if they will be Skyrim/ Witcher beaters, or if they will end up on Ms's vast list of 60 Metacritic exclusives.

Look, of course you want to see AAA exclusives on your platform of choice, we all do. But just like with Kinect, MS's corporate strategy will again directly influence what kind of games we'll see rolling out of those 14 studios. They turned Halo into a GAAS title FFS, Everwild is supposed to fairy tale version of Sea of Thieves, and I'm willing to bet Fable and Avowed eventually show up as MMO's. Those are the kind of games MS needs to keep GP users engaged and subscribed to their service, not the AAA blockbusters Sony has, that come out once every 3 years.

Ori getting enhanced for Series X was also a highlight for me, granted it's not even pushing the Xbox One X 100%, that game is art over fidelity, which is a good thing... And something Halo needs to recognize and emulate.

"art over fidelity" seems counter to "not even pushing the xbox one x".

Also it was 4k and 60fps already.
Visually the Series X enhancement doesnt do anything to the graphics right? its just able to run 120fps now instead...

How many people even have 120 fps TV's?
60fps was probably smooth enough (its a platformer, not a Online competitive shooter), most people probably wont even notice the extra 60 fps (if they even have a tv that can show it).

It really doesn't matter to the end-consumer if a game is using all 12 Teraflops/8 CPU cores/16GB of Ram to display the image, what does matter is if it looks good.

So yes, having Ori "not even pushing the Xbox One X" or "Series X" is perfectly the fine, the game looks gorgeous due to it's strong art direction, it's a game that will age extremely well, if there was an exclusive highlight for the Xbox this entire generation, Ori is likely it.
Ori was also 60fps (With drops to 35fps~) and "almost 4k". - You won't tell much on the resolution between an Xbox One X and Xbox Series X, but the difference is there.

I am not going to argue against that 120hz TV's are an exception rather than the rule, because that would be silly.

The difference between 60hz and 120hz for anyone who frequently uses those refresh rates can tell the difference, heck you notice the difference even when moving a mouse cursor around a desktop screen. (I have a 144hz panel)

If anything a game that does allot of panning (I.E. Open world vista shots, 2d platformers etc') the difference is even more pronounced as there is significantly less judder... It's like comparing a 30fps and 60fps game, you can just tell the difference.
Same with 60fps and 120fps. You can just tell the difference.

120hz also tends to have a reduction in input times, so a game that relies heavily on timing of movement like Ori... Benefit greatly from higher refresh rates.

But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter much for those who only have a 60hz panel, but the future proofing is there if the technology ever becomes common place, it's a benefit the PC has always enjoyed... New hardware? Fine. Dial everything up and replay that old game in a new light.

Consoles are here to stay for an entire generation, so what isn't common now in the marketplace isn't necessarily going to be the market trend in 7 years time.

If it manages to be a notable Halo game, is it mediocrity? Again, I'm not gonna pretend visuals are everything.

I am not going solely by that screenshot, the gameplay trailer shown is a much better looking game overall. If that screenshot was all we had, I would be more concerned. Hence, I'm looking at everything we've seen thus far and you're looking at a picture to make a point.

If Halo Infinite is supposed to be the game that sells the Series X, then they should get rid of the Xbox One port, PC port, Gamepass and xCloud. No? I already have a Xbox One X and years of Gamepass, I can enjoy this game without a Series X. You aren't looking at the big picture, many are going to have access to it instantly without buying any new hardware. Its even launching on Steam!

Hence, it not really flagship title for Series X. The best console experience will likely be on Series X though. We won't see a Halo game that really pushes the Series X for another 3 or 4 years probably. The only thing I am really hoping is its a good game.

You: Graphics graphics graphics!

Me: Graphics are okay, gameplay looks like a much more polished Halo 5 to me. I like 4K/60 fps which numerous 9th gen games seem to lacking and I hope it'll be an enjoyable Halo experience. Also, its not just a Series X game nor was it truly built for it.

The thing with Halo is that it's supposed to be a console selling title, it's supposed to showcase the Xbox platforms capabilities to it's fullest extent, it's supposed to make me want to buy gamepass, it's supposed to make me want to buy an Xbox. Does it do that? No.

Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 really showed us what the Original Xbox could do with it's parallax mapping and advanced pixel shader effects.

Halo 3 took it a step further with it's HDR lighting pipeline and Tessellated water effects.

Halo 4 had an impressive presentation, mostly thanks to cutbacks to dynamic lighting and shadowing and baking them instead, plus investments into effects like subsurface scattering and screen space ambient occlusion.

Halo 5 was arguably a dropped ball on the visual front, but the Xbox One was an underpowered console to start with, but they did prioritize 60fps.

Halo: Infinite also looks like it's dropping the same ball as Halo 5 on the visual front, potentially still being held back by the Xbox One as some of the rendering techniques employed are decisively held back by last generation approaches.

And that sucks.

Halo Infinite had the opportunity to take the graphics discussion to be entirely about Microsoft and Xbox, but it lost the opportunity to run with that narrative... Right now Sony's technically "weaker" console has the more impressive looking games.

In saying that, Infinite still has a "Ray Tracing" patch coming, so that may resolve some of the extremely flat lighting, but it's what they should have used to start with... But the first impression isn't a positive one on the visual front... And that is a damn crying shame.

I am expecting big things from Fable which was the big highlight for me, hopefully they go for a 30fps presentation and bring those graphics effects home, make Xbox the talking point, sell me on buying that console.

But I said so much more than that. You are an expert at oversimplifying things, especially when it serves your purpose.

https://twitter.com/klobrille/status/1287434940364267520?s=21

Never.

IF people actually cared about GamePass for Xbox, the Xbox One would be selling FAR better than it is. I'm not saying it's not a good deal - it totally is - but being on GamePass isn't really a selling point if we're being honest. Especially not when you can get it on PC.

And fine, we'll go through that list of games and talk about how much hype each one has:

Halo Infinite - the gameplay demo seems to have done more harm than good.

Everwild - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good.

Avowed - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good.

Fable - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good.

Senua's Saga - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good, though the last game was quite good.

State of Decay 3 - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good.

Forza Motorsport - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good, though the rest of the franchise is good

Psychonauts 2 - This actually looks good and we have a good idea what it'll be like! I am excited to play this on PC!

Grounded - This also looks really good, I won't lie. This is 2 points so far to the entire list.

Battletoads - Honestly looks bad and hasn't been heard from in a little over a year now. Not good PR for such a simple game.

Age of Empires IV - Cool! I guess? I Can't really comment on this one other than...hey, it's another Age of Empires.

Wasteland 3 - N/A (I don't know enough about it to comment, but the fact that it's got almost no hype does not help)

Tell me Why - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good.

Dusk Falls - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good.

Microsoft Flight Simulator - Yep it's a flight sim! I'm sure it'll be great but the audience is quite small.

Medium - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good. (Honestly, I have high hopes for this one, looks interesting)

The Gunk - Still too early to tell if it looks good or not. All we got was a cinematic trailer and a very rudimentary bit of gameplay.

STALKER 2 - Again, looks fine but super generic. No gameplay, no way to tell if it'll be good or not.

Tetris - Dude, it's on PS4 already. Xbox is just getting the enhanced version sooner. this does NOT count as an exclusive.

Scorn - Looks alright, might be the most interesting and most fleshed out game on this list so far since we know how it plays.

Call of the Sea - HOnestly, I'm shocked more people aren't talking about this one. It's one of the only games on the list to have any demonstrative gameplay.

Warhammer DarkTide - All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good, though WH40K games are usually decent.

Dragon Quest XI - not an exclusive, doesn't count (It's even on the switch, dude)

Destiny 2 - This gets as much love as the GTAV announcement at the Sony Conference.

So yeah, big list of games and all, but almost none of them have any hype, only a handful of them have any gameplay, and most of them are in this nebulous phase of 'All we know is how it looks and who made it. Too early to tell if it's actually good'. You can spout all your nonsense about how strong Xbox's game lineup is all you want up and down the backside 'til the cows come home, but they've been saying the same thing year after year after year after year since 2013 and they've never delivered. Again, I'd love to be wrong, but I pretty much guarantee 2/3 of these will be nonstarters or get lost in the sea of games out there. There's very little special in any of these, which makes me sad because I'm sure lots of people worked so very hard to make them.

Nobody needs to brag about Final Fantasy's Timed Exclusive status, because in the end it doesn't matter. Sony has always had a strong first and third party exclusive lineup, why do you think they don't give a shit about giving up stuff like Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn to the PC crowd? They have nothing to lose and everything to gain by expanding their audience. Sony do it after releasing on PS4 to give their console value, Microsoft release all their stuff on PC becuase it's the only way to get people to buy them.

And I don't give a shit about gamepass. I don't care that you'll be playing games and paying less, because I actually care about physical media. I care about collectors editions. I care about having a collection and building a bunch of shit. I still buy movies and TV shows despite having Netflix and Disney+ because those streaming services are great for convenience but mean nothing to me when it comes to pride. I get that many people don't care about that stuff anymore, but I do and that's why Gamepass means nothing to me. All it is to me is an anchor to either a console I don't want to play or a PC that I can't afford to upgrade. And like I said, Gamepass is a great bargain deal, but it clearly doesn't mean as much as you think to enough people to make the Xbox a success.

Microsoft really should just go either streaming or third party. Imagine how fucking great it would be if you could get GamePass on PS4! Imagine a world where instead of having to buy a console with no real value, you just play on the console you already have! If Microsoft studios went third party and backed out of the console war, everybody wins. Sony and Playstation players win becuase there would be more games on their systems, Nintendo and their fanbase wins because there would be more games on their systems, PC gamers win because they continue to get a little bit of everything, and Microsoft would win because they'd get all the benefits of selling their games without any of the costs of having to manufacture and market their own console. It's a winning situation for everyone.

I still would only play a handful of their games, but it'd be a win for everyone. as it stands, even you don't seem to think there's any value in the actual Xbox, it's all about Gamepass to you.

Overall, weak show. Too many trailers, little gameplay footage, and whenever there is gameplay footage, it is a disappointment. Some footage reminded me of the PS3 era, and it looks like most of Xbox games won't be out for a few years, and unlike SONY, they don't have a solid line-up of recently released exclusives like Ghost or The Last of US 2 to fall back, SONY can repackage and re-release those games whenever the PS5 is going through a drought, especially that the TLOU2 multiplayer portion of the game is still in development.

Back to Xbox, Halo is clearly unfinished, showing off a build that's running on PC? it's starting to make sense why their first event sucked (talking about the May event that all of you want to brush off and pretend that it never happened), and it also makes sense why the second event was scheduled for July. It wasn't a masterful strategic move to counter SONY's event (like some of you have been trying to convince us), they simply had no choice. Can you imagine what Halo would've looked like if it was shown months ago? lol.

On a more positive note, Everwild looks epic based on what little we saw, and it seems that MS has a clear advantage in terms of exclusive WRPGs (if they deliver).

Not here to argue with your take. But I will say this has been confirmed to be an older build that was initially meant for E3.  So they just sat on this instead of dedicated time and resources to making a demo further along in development.

You can not be that naive, it's embarrassing how you're willing to bend over for MS. Are you a new gamer or something? Has Xbox-exclusive output been so dry that you forgot how games should look like when they're revealed?

Games like Horizon, God of War, FF7R, Ghost, TLOU2 and Uncharted 4 were revealed YEARS before they were actually released and they managed to impress despite being early builds. Not to mention, E3 was to take place about a month ago, so your (or Phil's) excuse is laughable, especially that the event timing was chosen by MS, no one imposed it on them, so they had all the time in the world to capture the best footage they could and make a good second impression, especially after their May event disappointed everyone. It's funny how Spider-man: MM, which is labelled as an expansion by you, managed to look 1000x times better than Xbox's biggest flagship:
