Fantastic opening for Ghost of Tsushima and Paper Mario crossed 100k

Of course, incredible Switch sales, expected that they had stock ready for Paper Mario's release. Nice boost for Animal Crossing.

Edit: also, not shocked GOT did not help PS4 sales much.

Great opening for Ghost of Tsushima but it had way less impact on hardware than predicted a few months ago.

Sony must have switched production lines over to the PS5 even sooner than I thought. They are pacing out their last distribution of stock week by week instead of dumping a ton at once for a big game. Does anybody know if the PS4 is currently sold out in Japan?

Sony apparently wants to have 10M consoles ready at launch, so they certainly had to switch production early on for them to reach that goal.

Additionally, I suppose they are shipping most consoles to the west, thus not leaving much for their home market.

I thought it was 10m by the end of the year, not necessarily at launch?

Doesn't make much of a difference, if they launch shortly before BF then 10M must be produced already if they want to have them all shipped by end of the year.

Unless Sony meant producing 10M this year and shipping them out as they come, so probably only 7-8 actually available during the launch year, the rest being in transit.

Ghosts of Tsushima sold incredibly well.  I guess Western games can sell just fine in Japan as long as they have a Japanese theme.

Nintendo actually sold more Switches this week than physical copies of Paper Mario.  I imagine that it happened something like this.  Nintendo saved up some extra stock for the Paper Mario launch, but then Animal Crossing and RFA fans rushed in and bought half of the hardware.  AC actually is up 28% this week and (not coincidentally) there were more Switches available.  That should give us a clue that there is still a bunch of pent up demand for Animal Crossing.

This weeks sales were a lot of Animal Crossing Switch bundles

Also NIntendo is trying to shop more regular Switches to Japan and the Lites to the West.

Hot damn! Over 100k for the Switch! The difference with the PS4 and Switch is hilarious despite the PS4 having a new major release. Complete domination!

Paper Mario seems on the low end of what the series usually does (well apart from Color Splash) but still a decent opening week. Switch HW sales continue to impress. PS4 HW depressingly low despite a terrific opening for Ghost of Tsushima.

It's like the hardware and software for each console flipped.

Switch - low side software but huge hardware.
PS4 - high side software but minimal hardware.

8/10 of the top 10 are Switch games. There was also an increase for Animal Crossing. I bet Paper Mario barely contributed to the Switch hardware.

Their goal is to produce 10m units before the end of year I believe, down from their initial 5-6m projection.

Just a reminder that Playstation 3 launched on November 11th, 2006, it had pricing similar to what we expect from Playstation 5. Which were ¥49,980 / ¥59,980 depending on the SKU.

Launching with 88K sales, by the end of 2006 PS3 managed 466K sales in Japan.

I honestly don't think Sony needs to ship more than 500K in Japan for 2020 and the first week of 2021. If the pricing is closer to ¥60,000 than they probably don't even need to ship 400K to Japan. So overall the vast majority of what they are going to manufacture will end up elsewhere. At this point I'm wondering if PS4 and PS5 combined will be able to sell 1M this year in Japan...

It's certain that this year's baseline will continue to be higher than last year's, so the next five weeks are bound to be easy wins for 2020. The situation in 2019 was that both the updated hybrid SKU and the Lite were known, so weekly sales leading up to them were rather low. Launch weeks for the SKUs were week 35 and 38, respectively.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.
