True, but at the same time a free multiplayer approach could strengthen their position on the market, so that could be a positive outcome. There were examples of companies walking back on bad practices, see multiplayer passes. Maybe we are on the verge to see the same with multiplayer paywalls as well.

Corporation are reactionary. Just like during the 7th gen when Sony wasn't as dominant. They did consumer friendly things to get back on track. Now Microsoft is in the position where they have to give even if it hurts. If it works, Sony will respond and we consumers get the benefits.

Potential surge in Game Pass subs >>>>>> Gold revenue

From a corporate standpoint it makes sense. Also the surge in PR and snowball effect knowing your primary competition would still charge for multiplayer.

Well, there are about a billion examples of new subscription schemes replacing older ones being worse than before, so I'm not holding my breath. If anything pulling a service before the announcement of a new service to replace it could indicate that they do not want people to still get the better subscription model.

I would like to remind everyone that this is the same company that:

1. Locked online play behind a paywall.

2. Openly tried to do aggressive online DRM.

3. Suggested that people should buy outdated devices if they don't like the bullshit on the new one.

If you curb your optimism now you won't be too triggered when the disappointment comes.

Ya 2 and 3 are from the same guy, Don Mattrick. Pretty sure Xbox doesn’t like his business model and paid for it the last 7 years.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I think this is awful because it now cost $100 to buy a year worth of Xbox Gold. $25 for 3 months. Hence, if this is essentially a price increase they better improve the service.

For $80 more you get a year of Gamepass Ultimate.

I literally have a list of company statements weaponized and ready to launch ready to respond to posts like this. I'll save it for when the time is right, though. I'll just say everyone's favorite company has said/done some questionable things in the past...

Would be great for Xbox gamers if multiplayer became F2P. Pretty ironic if MS ended up ending the online paywall they started.

However, I don't think Sony would follow suit, at least not right away (until they expand PS Now infrastructure/availability). I think this increases Xbox Series X lifetime sales potential to the 60 - 70 Million range. It definitely makes the Lockhart model a bit more attractive to me.

I'm not sure how reliable Tom Warren is, compared to someone like Brad Sams, but the latter has suggested multiplayer will be locked to a Games Pass subscription, which is the absolute worse case scenario for the industry. I feel like Sony and Nintendo would follow suit in terms of increasing the cost to play online if MS did this.

This is precursor to one of 2 things most likely:

  • Free multiplayer next-gen (this would be the only fair move by MS, as Windows 10 users use the same multiplayer servers as Xbox players but don't have to pay for them)
  • Online locked behind the gamepass paywall (this would suck, as 12 months of Gmaepass currently costs $120, twice as much as 12 months of Gold cost before it was removed as an option)

Free multiplayer is not going to happen, it has already been proven to be a cash cow.

#2 is what I think. New tiers of Gamepass, but it will be more expensive than XBLG to which fans will justify of course with the extra free games.

Unless the plan is to get rid of Xbox Live Gold, that won't happen. Because Live Gold becomes useless.

And if that happens, what is Gamepass Ultimate for?

MS is raising the price of Gold if there is no longer a 12 month option. Gamepass Ultimate users are the only people that might not care.

How is that 3rd point anti-consumer?

very interested in seeing how the whole thing plays out. On the one hand I really don't believe that Xbox will abandon charging a fee for online games, but on the other I also don't imagine that the xbox team will make the mistake of trying to force the Gamepass service to anyone who tries to make a 12 months subs.
Free online on xbox is an extremely bold move, if it happens I will tip my hat to Phil Spencer, he really is willing to bet all his chips on the Gamepass.

Would replacing gold with a gamepass sub for the same price work ? I have gold but no game pass since I now use my xbox for exclusives and my time playing MP has declined year on year since its peak on the 360 leading me to look at ending my gold sub when it finishes up in November but game pass combined with online .could work in MS's favor when it comes to gamers like me.
