I guess I am supposed to answer the thread title, not your silly question in the original post. As if anything Xbox could ever get me excited.

The PS5 conference set a low bar. People learned that they'll be able to play a Spider-Man expansion and some Astrobot software that Sony doesn't dare to charge money for. While the hype is still fresh, it can't take too long until people realize that none of Horizon 2, Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet & Clank and Demon's Souls got a 2021 release window. So what Microsoft needs to do in the first party games department:

"Here's Halo Infinite. This version was built from the ground up for XSX. You'll be playing it this holiday season."
"And here's Forza Motorsport 8. Same as Halo."

PS5 already wrecked. Apparently people care about what they can play in the near future.

Microsoft can show trailers of first party titles that are far out, like Hellblade 2. It's not like Sony managed to put any pressure on Microsoft with all their TBD titles.

Then go over a bunch of AAA third party multiplats and keep repeating that the best console version of every game shown will be on the XSX. Close out the show with the price of the console and drive the point home that the XSX won't cost more than the PS5.

Game Pass in the middle somewhere.

The bottom line is that realistically Microsoft couldn't have asked for a better PS5 event. Sony's only two top studios that could have had a killer app ready anytime soon were Guerilla Games and Polyphony Digital (both released games in 2017, as opposed to all others who released games in 2018-2020), and neither one of them is capable of hitting a 2021 release date by the looks of it. The hype machine for Sony's ultra fast SSD couldn't demonstrate any games to back it up. A large portion of the PS5 event was padding, plus not much gameplay was shown. Microsoft is in a good position here. Instead of the huge question being how they can compete with, let alone beat a behemoth, it's now a rather basic premise of simply don't mess it up, because a lot of things have been lining up.

No mention of the hat in the title, though...

You say Microsoft just doesn't have to mess up but people lose their shit over anything Sony does. Just revealing the PS5 logo made some people orgasm. Microsoft has to do better than "just don't mess up" to impress those people. Something crazy unexpected like partner up with Sega. They need "a megaton".

They basically need to take some risks and come up with some new AAA ip's and forget about all that cross-gen crap. Halo, Gears and Forza are great, but lets face it, Gears and Halo just don't have the kind of pull they had 10 years ago. People want to see something new and exciting.

Playstation fans were very excited about GT, Ratchet, Horizon and Spider-Man. Demon's Souls was something many loved to see.

I also want new stuff but I guess if you manage to have a good quality, people don't care about new or not a new ip.

those who lose their shit about anything Sony does will never leave Playstation. They might buy an Xbox as well but not only an Xbox.

MS could have the best 20 next gen games exclusive on Xbox and those who lose their shit about anything Sony wouldn't stop to buy a Playstation.

MS can win over "normal" customers who aren't extreme fans of something. Those didn't lose their shit because of a PS5 logo, most won't even post in gaming forums at all.

I think it's save to say that Sony's brand name is so big in Europe and some other places that MS won't sell more consoles than Sony does even if MS will do more right next gen. But they could at least manage to take away a few million sales and make the Xbox brand more successful (not only with console sales but also with Gamepass on PC and so on)

Really hard to say but they really need to do an outstanding performance.

Despite what detractors can say and only showing gameplay for one game (ratchet and clank) it seems that are a huge amount of people showing expressions of interest of getting the console without launch price confirmed.

Is better if they stick to their guns and announce a competitive price (which I don’t reckon they will).

A new Gears of War would help or new IP’s from the recently acquired studios. Also Halo Infinite as a launch title but the game was announced in 2018 and no gameplay yet.

But is really hard to say, It seems that a lot of people are saying that there is a lot of hype for Xbox Series X, but it was the same with Xbox One X and that thing flopped

While Sony's event was impressive in quantity and type of games I think it lacked ever so slightly in the wow department. Other than 1 or 2 brief gameplay glimpes their was nothing really I saw that I felt couldn't be done on a PS4 at lower res and frame rates. I almost feel as if the games Sony showed off were built with PS4 in mind and then later moved to PS5 development such as Horizon 2 and the Spiderman Expansion.

For me MS needs 1 or 2 significant gameplay sequences (i.e a solid couple of minutes) showing new games whether its old or new IP's that actually truly show off what next generation consoles can achieve that current ones cant. Their console definitely has the brute force to do so.

Personally this would do it for me:

1. Hellblade 2 - 2 minute uninterupted gameplay sequence.
2. Next Forza game - this can be a mashed up gameplay trailer showing off glimpses of what might be possible. Do not do what Gran Turismo did.
3. Halo Infinite - maybe a gameplay sequence?
4. Maybe a suprise announcement with either a new IP or maybe a revival of something like Fable?

I was kinda with you but then you mentioned Hellblade 2, you got me xD

Extended, extremely good-looking Halo gameplay. At the end of the day, that franchise may not be quite as big from a business perspective as it used to be, it is still a massive property in terms of significance to gaming culture, especially among the older gamers that can plop down $500 for a powerful console at launch. So, if they can wow everybody with really good halo, the rest of their conference just needs to be pretty solid and they'll have an all-around winner on their hands.

@RolStoppable

The original wasn't exactly a heavy hitter and nowhere in the league of other large IPs like Halo or Gears.

I think of it like a side game more in line with games like Returnal. AA game, moderate budget and might be good but not a platform seller per say.

I want kameo 2 footage. That Kena game gave me serious conversation Kameo vibes.

No game is nearly as important right now as Halo Infinite. They've already set it as the centrepice of their new system/launch, and they're marketing it as a true return to form as well as their main showcase for next-gen capabilities. While there's a lot of fans still jaded over the post-Bungie era, it'd be naive to then believe Halo doesn't still have huge presence and relevance in the medium, especially when it comes to the Xbox brand.

To piggyback on one of Rol's points, the most important market for the twins are the gamers who'll buy the best-selling mult-plat games i.e. CoD, GTAV, FIFA and so forth. One huge advantage Halo has as a showcase exclusive, is it appeals directly to the exact same crowd who buy those games. A bit different from the crowd who may have more interest in streamlined/story-driven games, artistic games, and obviously a lot different from the main crowd who like Nintendo games.

Even being optimistic, the only exclusive PS5 might have near that calibre in it's first year is Gran Turismo 7-- a sequel for a series that has been in serious decline, and will probably be outmatched by the new Forza.

There's a few important prerequisites for the system, like price, functionality, broad AAA support and not having another marketing disaster like last gen. But after all that, Halo Infinite is the most important thing by far; followed by other exclusive offerings during the first year; cross-gen support; services; and showing what all their new studios will be offering going forward, while proving they'll be committed to those projects and won't just can them and/or the studios. For that last point, it'd go a long way if they could revive Scalebound's development, and have it as a cross-gen release in the first year of the new system, but that's just a personal hope.
