Answer the damned question!

Fantastic games 65 51.18%

100% backwards compatible with every Xbox 3 2.36%

VR Support 3 2.36%

Shockingly low price 21 16.54%

There's NOTHING they can do 31 24.41%

Other (please explain) 4 3.15%

Total:127

At the start of this gen, as a 360 owner, I expected to eventually get an Xbone once Gears 4 and Halo 5 came out. Sadly, both games ended up looking really uninteresting to me, and there just weren't enough enticing games in general to make me ever seriously consider buying the system.

So the Series X has an uphill battle to win me back into the Xbox camp. They'll have to convince me that their first party lineup will be back to the standards of the original Xbox and 360, that they won't homogenize and water down games like Hellblade 2 to try to appeal to broader audience.

I am open to getting one, but if they want to win me over they'll have to bring their A game.

You exagerated.

Donkey Kong, Banjo Kazooie, Conker and GoldenEye are much more popular than SoT.

I doubt SoT will be as well regarded and remembered 20 years later as those other titles.

Goldeneye sold the most with 7 million approximately. So probably not that. But there’s a good chance SoT has more unique players (that played a decent chunk to gets their times worth) then Banjo and Conker. I mean the N64 only sold 32 million the legs weren’t there in some cases. Conker released so late in the cycle that it was largely ignored. Point is SoT is clearly up there somewhere.

On another note I would also say it’s longevity should be accounted for as well. You have a dedicated community that plays hundreds of hours of the game. Even ones who play once in a while dedicated entire afternoons to get in a good session. That’s enough play time to overlap their older titles many times over. And people playing years later where as Banjo would have been cut off for the next game Rare made in that era. Something to consider.

Do you want to have this convo in 20 or 30 years to see if people will still remembering this fondly of SoT as they do of these 3 games I cited? And to pretend SoT is more famous than Donkey Kong Country is just wrong. That is much more longevity than your example. People still play those 3 games regularly.

@Runa

I get it, you clearly have explained yourself. And yet I prefer Xbox. To put it short I tend to miss older games and like the idea of revisiting them alongside newer ones. I beat a lot of 360 games I missed, great games and I’m glad I was able to do that. With Sony that doesn’t seem to be a priority. Yes yes they put out amazing new games to forget about the old and that’s fine. I just feel the BC program Xbox is doing speaks to me far more then what Sony is doing.

Overall I prefer FPS, racing, Wrpgs and anything turn based. Halo covers the shooter itch but has imo one of the greatest extensive lore in gaming with dozens of novels and the like. I haven’t seen a PS Ip with anywhere near that level of Sci fi detail and world building (galaxy building to be precise). Forza Motorsport and especially Horizon are the best platform specific racers imo as I like sim but really prefer the arcade style that Horizon does.

I like Wrpgs. I had so much fun with Fable and especially the 2nd. It fell on hard times but I’m looking forward to it’s revival. Then you have Obsidan and Inexile. My Wrpg wants are now covered 3 times over by next month hopefully, where as I don’t see a big exclusive wrpg presence with PS.

I love MP titles. I played a lot of Halo, SoT, FH4 and Gears multiplayer. That’s just something I can’t find over at PS. They excel at making amazing games, but are confined to single player third person action adventure titles. That’s just not my thing. Gears and lately Hellblade cover those wants just fine and am looking forward to their sequels. I’m looking forward to Gears Tactics and Wasteland 3 when it comes to console and even Flight Simulator. I find myself trying games and genres I previously didn’t consider. Xbox has a ton of genre representation with their 1st party.

Game Pass has allowed me to play a ton of games and save hundreds. I played 20 games last year alone on GP, again I tend to miss games that I ought to play. I broke even on Gears 5 and Outer Worlds alone. Because Xbox is losing they are forced to make better services that give you value, which benefits me. I know that if I went to PS I would be spending considerably more money to play the same multiplats I played on GP, so I appreciate keeping more of my own hard earned money.

Just giving you a perspective of someone like myself. I have 0 illusions that Xbox always did great and there were years that they let me down. And yet they still cater to me in a way PS never will. And right now, I feel like it’s 2007, sheer optimism of what’s to come.

Alright, here we go. I decided to whip out some hard numbers and data for the 2017, 2018, and 2019 output for the Switch, Ps4, and Xbox one to prove my point about Microsoft not really having anything.

Keep in mind I took my data from Gamerankings.com before it collapsed. These numbers are for any game with 75% or higher, console exclusives. The rules are Simple. 1 - IT's console exclusives. If it released for the console and PC, then it still counted (I have to give Xbox something.) 2 - It's for brand exclusivity, so if it's for, say, Switch and WiiU or PSV/4 or something, that also counts. 3 - It's only exclusive for that year. If it was later ported to other consoles, it still counts (Again, gotta make sure I twist all the rules so that Microsoft has some representation on the list.) 4 - Remasters count. 5 - at least 20 reviews are needed (This weeds out a lot of smaller indie titles, sadly)

Even with these rules, which are implemented solely to ensure Microsoft still gets represented, here are the numbers of games released on each console with 75% or higher:

2017:
Switch - 11 Games
PS4 - 27 games
XBO - 3 games

2018:
Switch - 11 Games
PS4 - 13 Games
XBO - 1 Game

2019:
Switch - 11 Games
PS4 - 5 Games
XBO - 1 Game

The last three years have been anemic as hell for Xbox, and consider Cuphead and Ori and the Blind Forest (2/3 of the 2017 releases) were recently ported to switch. To be fair, a bunch of games on other consoles eventually got ported to other consoles (FFX HD and FFXII: the zodiac Age, for example), but they were exclusive at the time, just like Final Fantasy VII Remake is at this time.

For Shits and giggles, I am also gonna look at the 2020 list on Metacritic (But I can't give such strict rules so I'm literally going to look at the top 100 and only do what I 'think' are exclusives, since this is impromptu and I've not had time to really delve deep into it like I did with my old curated lists.) Of the top 100 Metacritic games released in 2020 so far:

Switch has: 6 games (With at least Paper Mario: the Origami king on the Horizon)
91 - Animal Crossing: New Horizons
89 - Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
85 - What the Golf? (Weird, it's Microsoft but not on Xbone)
82 - Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
81 - Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore
81 - Rune Factory 4 Special

PS4 Has: 7 Games (With at least Ghost of Tsushima on the horizon)
96 - The Last of US Part II
95 - Persona 5: Royal
89 - Dreams
87 - Final Fantasy VII Remake
85 - Nioh 2
83 - MLB The Show 20
82 - Yakuza 5 Remastered

XBO Has: 1 game
90 - Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Keep in mind that's just of the top 100, and 80 or above on Metacritic. Not nearly as comprehensive a list, but in line with what I've said. between 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, the Xbox Brand has had only 6 notable exclusives. no I didn't count Crackdown or Sea of Thieves, becuase those did not get good reviews and were pretty universally panned/ Also, are there any Xbox One games coming out before the Xbox Series X comes out?

This is not moping, this is hard data. This isn't bias, this is an observable pattern. This is a very reasonable explanation as to why I've given up on Xbox and so have many others.

Xbox doesn't have any games. Hell, I'm not interested in most of the games on that 2020 list (Don't care about MLB, don't care about Dreams, weirdly uninterested in The LAst of Us or Yakuza or even Nioh 2 despite loving soulslikes; I also don't care about any of those Nintendo games aside from Xenoblade Chronicles), but the point is, they're there. There's something for people who aren't me. there's content for people who like The Last of US (which will be another mega-hit, you just watch) or PErsona or Yakuza or nioh. Animal Crossing has done astoundingly. Final Fantas VII has done astoundingly. So many games have done well, but the only offering worth anything on Xbox, according to that list, is Ori. and I got the last Ori on switch so I'm sure this Ori will be on Switch, too.

When you actually see the patterns, it's gotta be hard to be so steadfast in your love for Microsoft. Brand loyalty has to be the only possible explanation. Or, somehow, those 6 games are all precisely, 100% up your alley.

Lol cmon you could have have agreed to disagree. Throwing out the facts just tells me what we all ready know: PS4 had an amazing gen and Xbox One has a worse one. That’s me talking. So the majority of people like what they like, and yet I’m one of those who just doesn’t see the appeal of what they got.

I tried to tell you my perspective, but they way you just threw it aside...I mean I’m able to acknowledge what the competition offers yet you can’t empathize at all. It’s ok, I said my piece.

a long time ago, when I was on the BoxOfficeMojo forums, this one dude used to argue with everyone over the summer of 2006 saying that Superman Returns - a rather infamous failure and one of the biggest box office disappointments of the last 20 years - was more successful than Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - what was at the time only the third movie in history to crack 1 billion dollars at the international box office.

Arguing with you reminds me of summer 2006.

All you've got is 'but I like the holy trinity and backwards compatibility.' If Backwards compatibility and power (Xbox One X) mattered, this would be a far more interesting discussion. This entire 'discussion' has just been me typing out my thought process trying to figure out how the heck anyone still likes Xbox. You said your perspective, but I'm still having a remarkably hard time understanding how 'three franchises and old games' is enough to even remotely compare to what's available on PS4 or Switch.

The console wars are dead, I genuinely don't understand how anyone can still support the Xbox considering how little it offers. Then again (not to get political), some people still fly a confederate flag, I guess.

At this point, it's more like I'm curious where all the games are if people keep going on about how all these new teams are gonna revolutionize gaming. Microsoft has had money for decades now and despite having the deepest pockets and even Rare, we've not seen anything remotely exciting on their platforms for years. My point has always been that, despite the promises for a better future, they've done nothing in four years to make me think that owning Obsidian or any of their other new acquisitions is going to result in good games.

To be fair Fallout NV is one of my favourite games and I was secretly jealous of Hellblade being on PS first when I really wanted to play it.

I understand where you're coming from @Runa216, and you're making some valid points, but do you maybe wanna wait another 6 months before you burn the rest of your Xbox t-shirts? Good grief man.

Imagine claiming Xbox are already dead and buried when the next-gen hasn't even begun yet, nor have they even done their first big showcase, which is what we're meant to be discussing.
