It's possible that it new horizons could top the original pokemon games this year with digital sales are factored in. Mario kart 8 would be at 4 million if they combined the sales of the switch and wii u version with the switch version is currently at 2.9 million physical copes. Either way, it should make the list soon with digital sales factored in. This means the switch will have 4 4M+ sellers at the end of this fiscal year (animal crossing, pokemon, smash, and mario kart).

Game released 4 years later as a better version. Almost like a third version we are use to. It’s almost as guilty as combining Mario kart 8 sales with Mario kart 8 deluxe

Came out the same year.  You had to mail away for it, but still.

And if you're arguing it's too different to count, then are you saying we can't count US and Japan sales together for Worldwide sales?   Cause the US versions were both based on Blue.

Are you sure? I really thought Blue version came out so much later after the vanilla versions

NEW DEVICE SPECULATION

The main reason why I think there would be a complimentary Pro Dock or Peripheral Computing Device, as opposed to a better tablet, is the cost-efficiency.

Right now the technology for a better tablet considering we already got a slight revision last year, doesn't seem feasible. Also as mentioned Nintendo won't want to gate away it's 1st Party games, on the other hand, major third party games have several issues with the Switch. If we aim for a peripheral for $200 or bundled for $450 would ensure there is additional hardware revenue. It would solve a few problems with the Switch for 3rd Parties:

  • Cart Sizes, Peripheral could have its own storage(250-500GB)
  • Peripheral can use NVIDIA's GeForce Now servers and allow dramatically improved performance via cloud-accelerated GPU power
  • Consoles can connect to supplemental computing devices remotely via local wireless network, with the extra processing power/storage being tapped over a wireless network
  • A Peripheral can boost connection strength and improves latency with online games and games/services that are powered by cloud computing

Nintendo has already patented such a device https://www.tweaktown.com/news/53167/nintendo-patents-external-console-upgrade-box/index.html

Now, this would be entirely focused on getting AAA 3rd Party games on the system that require more robust Online Capabilities and would struggle on the Nintendo's Switch's current hardware - think of GTA, COD, FIFA etc. I doubt Nintendo themselves would really create any games exclusive for the beefer "Pro", but it would provide an additional source of income for 3rd Party Devs as they port the PS4/X1 games that struggled to run on the system currently.

Alternatively, we've also heard about Pro Model, based on the leak - Nintendo is working with NVIDIA to develop a custom processor based on Volta architecture. https://www.ibtimes.com/new-nintendo-switch-pro-leaked-specs-might-disappoint-gamers-2909398

In any case, I expect Pro to hit this year or early 2021.

He's right Blue came out the same year it's a limited edition version of RG that was available only to subscribers of Corocoro, the western versions are based on blue which is why Green was never released. They were all out as the same time Blue just couldn't be bought at retail so it's not a third version.

Blue got a retail release in 1999

Didn't say otherwise he asked whether it came out the same year it did it just wasn't available at retail.

In addition to third parties not being bothered to port games to a fraction of the userbase, the kind of bandwidth/speed required for supplemental processing can't be done via the current Switch's USB or wireless connections, so a "Pro Dock" isn't viable.

Yeah, pretty sure.  Even Yellow was out before 1999 in Japan.

Man, the wait for official (global) AC numbers is torture.
I wish other regions had sales trackers with public numbers, and while I understand why they were discontinued, I miss VGC having weekly software charts.

24 GB Pokémon Green 4.040.000 Nintendo 28/02/1996
25 NDS Mario Kart DS 4.010.000 Nintendo 8/12/2005

A pretty crazy list. Outside of DQVII (PS1), FFVII (PS1), and Monster Hunter Freedom 3 and Unite (PSP), all of the games are from Nintendo platforms (and almost from every generation that Nintendo participated in).

To have 3 games (Smash Ultimate, Pokemon Sw/Sh, and Animal Crossing: NH) that reached the 4 million mark, especially in the current era in which the Japanese market is on the decline compared to generations past. This is also the generation in which the PS4 had arguably the higher ceiling in Japan, especially with basically all the big Japanese third party support (i.e., Kingdom Hearts III, FFVII Remake, FFXV, Tekken 7, DQXI, MHW, P5, Gran Turismo Sport, DMC V, RE7, RE2 Remake, Spider-Man, etc.). Its a remarkable achievement for the Switch to sort of come out of nowhere and provide software and hardware sales numbers that haven't been seen in a while, outside of handhelds.

You don't need a Switch Pro for that though, there are all kinds of revisions they could do.

Sure. I thought you were using Switch Pro as a generic term for some sort of upgraded Switch.  Boosting the power is what seems most likely, but I guess they could do something else.

Yeah agreed. When I talk about or see people talking about a Switch "Pro" or whatever they want to call it, I'm talking about and assuming others are talking about just the normal new versions of systems that Nintendo always does with the handhelds.  People who think Nintendo is gonna come out with some halfway to a new generation upgrade that plays games all the other Switches can't play are delusional. Nintendo has never done that, or when they have done something along those lines (GBC, N64 Expansion Pack, etc) it's been limited to all of like 5 games that can only be played with the upgrade. But they always have revisions to their portables, both cheaper versions and more premium versions. We already have the cheaper Lite, I'm sure we'll get a premium Switch whenever Switch sales start to slow and they'll do a price drop on the original combined with releasing an updated model.

It'd be very surprising if Nintendo DOESN'T release a Switch Pro as they always release a variety of versions of their portables. People like to buy new versions of stuff and they also like to buy the best versions of stuff - which is why Nintendo has always released different versions of their portables. We should fully expect at least one more version of the Switch to release and since we already have the Lite it seems obvious it'll be an upgraded version of the original. But yeah people who talk about some mid-generation reboot with a Switch 1.5 that can get straight ports of PS4 games or something is just pure fantasy land. If a game can't be played on the OG Switch and the Lite, its not gonna be able to be played on future versions of the Switch.
