I've always preferred turn-based combat systems in my RPGs. It's for that reason why I consider the 90s (especially the 16-bit era) as the Golden Age of the JRPG. So many greats came from Gen 4 & 5. Final Fantasy 4, 6, & 7, several old-school Dragon Quest games, Chrono Trigger, the Lunar duology, Super Mario RPG, and Earthbound are all classics of the genre.

To this day, I still don't know why turn-based combat fell out of favor with gamers. It can't be because it's "outdated," because action RPGs are just as old and turn-based. Fortunately, it's not entirely dead, as attested to by recent games like Dragon Quest 11, Persona 5, Bravely Default, and Octopath Traveler.

Edited to add titles I was reminded of.

This sums up my thoughts.

I take it you loved FFXIII as much as I did then? God, that combat system pissed me off.

FFX is the last game of the series I truly loved.

Turn based

Honestly, if I look at my all time favorites, from 80s onward, they come in all flavors, single character/party, linear/open, action or stat based. Still love the genre, though it's way past its prime, even with latest renaissance,

Unfortunately, still no VG RPG (at least for me) comes even close to pen&paper experience and it will probably take years and highly sophisticated narrative+world simulation AI for that to be achieved.

The type that is open world, or at least not linear like final fantasy 13 where you just push one button forward the whole game.

Also it needs to be a game, I don't like the type of rpg that you just listening and watching cutscenes, for example, witcher 3 was horrible due to this, you barely needed the controller at all.

I also need variation, I hated final fantasy 15 due to this, because I could use the same thing on every battle and win easily until the end of the game, didn't require any thinking or strategy at all.

Examples of great RPGs would be the Xenoblades series, its open world, its challenging, its mostly gaming with minimal cutscenes, its huge open worlds, and theres a lot of stuff to learn to battle and survive, cant think of any other good RPGs to be honest. I love the Mass effect (a bit too linear), Fallout and Elder scrolls series but those are too easy for me.

I also don't enjoy the types like Dark souls where you have to memorize the locations of the enemies and stuff, its unfair, I prefer a game based on skill rather than memory.

The absolute worst RPG I ever played I think was final fantasy 13, which is a shame because I loved the story and characters.

My favourite ever is Xenoblades X on the wiiU
