Well just like that. Welcome to Xbox Bethesda
This is what I expected. An Xbox Wire post and a short video from Bethesda. Don't expect any other new information until summer. As far as the "some" comment, They were never going to fully clarify what games will be exclusive or not right after this merger was completed. They will announce it when they announce the games.

Case by case still but exclusivity is confirmed for 'some' new titles, but which... Xbox PR fucking sucks Imo

MS PR sucks probably because they have not worked out all the details on every project in development now, where they stand as far as cross platform, investment in those cross platform titles and the cost of just killing them or releasing them. Usually a large scale purchase like this takes years to get everything down and plan out strategy going forward. Keeping moral high and keeping talent is also something that I am sure MS want to maintain as much as possible. I hope people really do not expect everything to be laid bare right after the purchase, we really do not know any of the details of the sell and what terms are within existing contracts. Expect to see people leaving Zenimax especially anyone with a C in their title because usually they are the first to go with a nice check that says "By By".
I do believe that MS probably will make at least one big game exclusive because it looks good and it can make the fanbase happy. If Starfield end up being a really big game, it could be the one they put front and center as exclusive. Even if the other games are not, it says MS is willing to pull take a big game and make it exclusive to its services. I would believe that Starfield would be the perfect game to make that message even if EDS does not make that leap.
That PR from Microsoft is terrible as usual and if I was choosing between a Series X or PS5 and read that Bethesda article it's nudging you more towards a PS5 than their own console "some new Bethesda titles" is wording chosen to please both fanbases whilst answering nothing. It would of been a powerful PR moment if they closed the article with "Xbox Series X/S are only consoles you can play future Bethesda titles like Starfield and TES 6 on.
If you're keeping games exclusive, why should you choose the big ones?
Yeah they will make you more cash than smaller titles (if you're very shortsighted) but will ultimately result in less subscriptions and selling less consoles which causes 3rd parties to sell less copies which might lead to weaker support.
Making smaller titles multiplat will grow the playerbase for MP (crossplay) and will reduce losses from development. They are too insignificant to move hardware. Also the target audience might already be somewhere else (for example platformers on Switch).
Obviously the PS5 timed exclusive are staying exclusive. I could see future Horror games from Tango going multiplat as well since the target audience really isn't there (on any single platform). Indiana Jones sounds like a game where the IP owners probably have a right to say on which platforms to release on. MMOs will likely be multiplat as well.
As for the rest? Should be at least time exclusive.

I simply do not see Game Pass on PS5 unless there is no such thing as Xbox consoles and even then it comes with a lot of complications (revenue split for one, Sony losing money from their store to GP is another). I double checked and there's no browser on PS5, they do have a hidden one but that's pointless for Microsoft. I don't think Microsoft will willingly throw away their hardware either, the vast bulk of both Microsoft's and Sony's revenue comes from that 30% cut they take off every transaction that happens on their store, along with Xbox Live/PSN, traditionally anyway. If Microsoft doesn't make the hardware, they lose a huge chunk of revenue through the store, they lose Xbox Live revenue, they solely have to rely on Game Pass which could be possible in the future but will take years (5+ easily) to get to the point that Game Pass can replace all that lost revenue. Sony would also need a very good reason to allow Game Pass on their consoles, which would likely come in the form of a big revenue cut cause if Sony allows Game Pass, they will lose money that could have been made via their own store. Xbox I could see more like Surface in the far future, high quality, high price but lower selling, as of right now though that's impossible, the vast majority of GP subs are on Xbox, the vast majority of their revenue comes from store transactions still, Microsoft needs to make their PC Store a viable alternative and hope that Game Pass blows up on Mobile/TVs/PC to replace that lost revenue, replacing that 30% cut would be no easy task, it'll take years upon years to get to that point, if they go too early their revenues will plummet and that will look bad to investors. Basically, we have to remember, the hardware may not make the money but the stores on said hardware make massive amounts of money for both Microsoft and Sony, without the hardware, you lose those stores. |
I agree the chance of Sony letting gamepass on their console is slim to none. I was stating that if the opportunity was there MS would take it. The thing is, what would drive people who own a PS system to get either a PC or Xbox console and gamepass. This is the decision MS is really looking at. My point is that MS probably do not care as much about beating Sony on console sales as they are wanting to beat Sony on subscriptions sales. Even if Sony sell way more consoles than MS does but MS sell way more gamepass subs, MS would believe they are winning. The terms where MS feel they are winning are not probably the same as what xbox fans believe because they are looking at totally different metrics.
The thing is putting all your hopes and dreams that MS will make everything from Zenimax exclusive will probably going to end in frustration. Who knows what goes on behind the scenes and all the decisions between MS and Zenimax that are being made on those points. Either way, I just do not feel this will be something that is pushed fast but instead a slow burn. MS needs to know how the market will take to certain decisions that is why I believe at least one main property will get the exclusive treatment, whether timed or full. Starfield makes for a perfect case sense no systems has been announce and its a new property. From there MS can gauge how such a game drive gamepass subs and decide on other projects in the works.
So, just as I expected the "exclusivity" question will not be answered anytime soon as decision hasn't obviously been made yet. Just a vague confirmation of "case by case" basis scenario which was already said before. The two things here: Microsoft leadership believes that games releasing on GamePass day one is way bigger deal than exclusivity, and second - as I thought, they still want to know how well Series X performs against PS5 to make a decision about that. They don't have a data on it yet, so it's hard for them to measure what they are gonna lose by not releasing these games on Playstation.

Always not great to hear about studios shutting down and people losing their jobs, but unfortunately I'm not surprised by these news at all. The game looked completely bland and uninspired from the start, so I knew it is gonna flop from it's first showcase.

Why would this nudge gamers towards a ps5 when there is definitely going to be Xbox and PC exclusives? If you want to enjoy all of Bethesda/Zenimax titles, you'll want an Xbox or PC.
We were never going to get a black and white answer to this. Xbox isn't going to back themselves into a statement that might not be true later because chances are they still don't know yet how things will unfold.
I also hate to say it, but I think everyone here overestimates the value of Bethesda's IPs. Yeah, Elder Scrolls and Fallout are big IPs, but outside of these two, nothing really is that big out of Bethesda's portfolio. I can be wrong here, but I think every Bethesda game outside of TES, Fallout or Doom has made them lose money in the end in the last decade, which is the reason why they started to search for an investor. Sure, it will give Xbox consoles a boost if the big ones will be exclusive, but it won't suddenly turn things around. Microsoft needs to focus on all their studios delivering on quality, just making Bethesda games exclusive will not suddenly make everyone Xbox their platform of choice.
