Alright, my final impressions of Halo Infinite Flight 2, weekend 1:

Matchmaking

  • I know I've already said this, but I'll reiterate for emphasis: This forced console vs PC matchmaking matchmaking has to go. Playing against PC people this weekend has just not been a good experience at all. My win/loss ratio and kill/death ratio for the weekend were the worst they have been in any given 3 day stretch of me playing Halo since probably 2004 when I first started playing Halo 2 (my first FPS ever). I likely didn't even win 25% of the matches I played this weekend, and I definitely had a K/D ratio under 1 for the weekend, and it's not like I'm bad at Halo or something, I even reached Onyx, the 2nd highest rank, in some Halo 5 playlists. Alot of these PC mouse people just have pinpoint accuracy across the map with the starting pistols, snipers, BR, commando, etc. there is nothing you can do to compete with the lack of aim assist on the Xbox version currently. Adding decent aim assist on console would help, but I'd much rather have the option to disable crossplay matchmaking.

Alright, I wasn't gonna say anything, but since you've brought it up like at least 3 times now....you're just not that good at this game yet. And don't sweat it, because the vast majority of players I've seen in this flight are average at best. Most of them are pretty bad. Maybe there's a bit of an adjustment to be made for people who play a lot of Halo still, and are expecting certain things to behave slightly differently than they are, I'm not sure. I do know that my brother, who's played a lot more Halo MP than myself over the last 5 years or so, was doing noticeably worse than myself during this Infinite flight. I haven't played Halo MP in quite some time, but I was able to pick this up quite well. Think my average KDA was around 8ish, and I probably won roughly 60% of my matches. The ones I lost were usually due to just having insanely bad teammates. That's from playing almost the entirety of all play sessions minus Sunday, cus I was watching football.

In that entire time, I encountered maybe like 3 players that I thought had remarkably great aim. Were they PC players? Idk...maybe...maybe they were just better than me. I haven't played anything on a competitive level since BF3, and I've generally played A LOT less PvP over the last several years than I used to, so it stands to reason I'm probably only somewhat above average at this point.

Don't get me wrong, to me, Halo has always been about starting matches on an even playing field, and so given the option in the full game, I probably would toggle PC crossplay off, to avoid that small percentage of players who are just insane on M&K...but most people really aren't anywhere near that. Lots of PC players will still use controllers, and many may not, but they're simply average players, and there's going to be very very little deviation between your encounters with them, vs encounters with an average console player.

Man, you just nailed it. 100% agree with that. I played a lot this weekend and I did not even realize people where using M/K until I read this thread today...
I think people are over-thinking this and someone is playing better, put this on the M/K instead of anything else.

No doubt, "really" good PC gamers will have an edge at the end with the aiming but I also think it is a very small minority.

I'm sure they will have a feature to disable cross-play. Maybe not launch, but at some point shortly after. I'm not worried about it.

I contest that point. I had several matches against what I could tell were other console players and I did very good in those, best on the winning team usually when that happened. Over time I have only ever gotten progressively better at Halo, I could see myself improving from Halo 2 to 3 to Reach to 4 to 5, each game in succession I got better at. But even after putting 25 hours of practice into Infinite between the 2 flights so far, playing Halo Infinite in it's current state is like going back to my old Halo 2 2004-2005 self, over a decade worth of progression and skill improvement lost.

And how exactly could you tell that? From what I could tell, playing the game, I never saw any symbols or other things that marked people as PC/Xbox players. The only times I walked away from a match thinking I must have had at least a few PC players in there, is when I looked at the chat function post-match and there was a lot written in there, as it seems to me people would find more time to quickly use that in-game with a keyboard. Performance wise there was almost never any particular standouts, and I think during the entire weekend I only had a negative KD like 2 times. Either I played against pretty much no PC gamers, or it can't be that big of an issue, because I guarantee you, historically, I'm far from a top tier Halo player. It's a new game. New maps. Some new dynamics with various equipment. Different quirks and behaviors on certain weapons. Maybe different/less aim assist atm. Some people are going to adjust to it quicker, some less so. Just because you were good in Halo 5 doesn't mean it's all down to PC players if you didn't immediately stomp people during this Infinite test. It's ok to admit that sometimes we're just not doing so hot in a game rather than put it all on other factors.

I happen to love Hunt: Showdown. I think it's a dope game. I've put quite a lot of hours into it. Definitely more than a weekend or two. Guess what? I suck balls at it. I'm literally thrilled if I win as little as 2 games in a row. It is what it is.

Odds are a player who's amazing on PC could pick up a controller and smash you just as hard due to their skill and game sense either way.

At the end of the day, why worry about PC players. I am sure you will be able to choose to play with them or not when the game release so no big deal. What you will need to worry about are the console players with the enhanced controllers which will feel like you are playing K/M C players. Either way, it will be the matchmaking putting you closure to people of your skillset that will matter the most which in this flight, I am sure they are not testing.

I hope you are right that they will offer a toggle on all playlists at release, though from what I read anyway, 343 only ever said that crossplay will be disabled in ranked.

Also, you make a good point about the matchmaking system, and that is something I had myself considered. Halo games usually attempt to match you against similarly skilled players (by accessing your lifetime and recent performance data) even in social, not just ranked. It's possible that the matchmaking system in this beta just hasn't been adapting to recent performance data to try and match you against similarly skilled players, because they were more worried about stress testing the servers and wanted faster matchmaking times. I do seem to vaguely recall that my performance in the Halo 5 beta was less than stellar as well, something that changed quite quickly once I played the actual game, though that was 7 years ago nearly so it's hard to remember.

At this point all me and the many others who are concerned can do is wait and see what happens. Hopefully 343 will do a blog about the first weekend to address playerbase concerns, instead of waiting until both weekends of the test are finished to do so. And hopefully they have plans to address these concerns before launch, fixing the aiming on console, improving the matchmaking, and hopefully making cross-play optional on all Playlists.

I believe you might have to high of an expectation of these flights.  I doubt the dev team concertation on the items you present and more looking at stress on the servers and technical issues.  Once this get to a beta stage is when they look to those types of feedback.  I doubt you will see any of your concerns address within these flights as its not on the technical level they are testing but more a personal level.

For those interested, the list of games that currently support Dolby Vision is very small.

can't remember a time where I didn't own any of the offered games. Somewhat pleased with the month. Almost bought Aaero a few weeks ago.

And here it is!

Took 12 months to come to Game Pass which is a couple of months more than I expected.

Nevertheless, another €25 saved (it's currently on sale lol. Talking about killing sales). The campaign is supposed to be quite decent after all.
