Forums - Nintendo - Likely 1st party titles for 2020

Here are some things we might see in 2020.

1) The usual suspects - games that regularly come out on handheld or home consoles.

Wario game (either platformer or smooth moves)
Mario RPG
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (or other Pokemon spinoff)
Proper 2D Mario game (non-port or non-Maker)
Proper Donkey Kong Country (non-port)
Bayonetta 3
Metroid Prime 4
Tomodachi
Nintendogs
2D Metroid
various Mario Sports titles

2) Revive old franchises

Advance Wars
Punch Out
F-Zero
Starfox
Excitetruck/bots
Wii Sports (or something like it)
Kid Icarus
Golden Sun
Star Fox

Lots of others.  Too many to count.

3) Ports & Remakes

There are still a few Wii U games left to port.  On top of that we got Link's Awakening this year and Xenoblade Chronicles is on the way.  Nintendo will likely have at least one other port in 2020 either from the Wii U or an older console.

4) 3rd Party games using Nintendo IP

The Switch already has Mario + Rabbids, Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, Starlink (w/ Starfox content), and Cadence of Hyrule.  They are showing that they are actively trying to get 3rd parties to make exclusives for Switch using Nintendo IP.  I doubt this is going to stop.

5) Sequels

Pokemon, Mario Party and Kirby sequels are definitely going to come eventually (though not necessarily in 2020), and we already know about BotW.  Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, and Splatoon are all games that may or may not get another game on the Switch.  Also, while technically a Square Enix game, I know the Octopath Traveler team is working on a sequel or some game like it.

6) New IP

So far we've gotten ARMS, Snipperclips, 1-2 Switch, LABO, and Ring Fit Adventure.  (I may have forgotten a game.)  Nintendo is putting out at least one new IP a year.  I would not be surprised to see this rate increase either considering how successful the Switch is.  Nintendo can afford to be more experimental at this point.

In short, Nintendo has a lot of games that they can still release including several heavy hitters.  They are in no shortage of potential content.  This is not even counting the release of 3rd party content, which has been accelerating each year.  And the Switch is successful enough that Nintendo can take some risks starting new IP or resurrecting old IP.  In fact, I think it is very likely we will see at least one game from each of the categories I listed.

The fact that this long post doesn't mention Pikmin 4 despite of the game being one of the very few EPD titles confirmed to be in development, breaks my heart.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

My wife's son loves the Nintendo dogs series.

- Mario Odyssey 2020 (Q4)
- Zelda Breath 2 (Q3)
- Bayonetta 3 (Q2)
- Animal Crossing (Q1)

Add a smaller title and a couple yet to be announced 3rd party ports.

Animal Crossing is a given. Bayonetta 3 is highly likely.
I agree something from the main Mario team is also likely.
I’m not expecting BotW2 until at least March 2021.
We won’t see anything from Retro and if there’s a Pikmin 4 I doubt it’ll be the game Miyamoto was talking about way back when; I’m positive that was just Hey Pikmin instead. Also Star Fox GP isn’t real.
I do think we shouldn’t be surprised if Super Mario Sunshine HD is announced, I can see that game coming.

Ubisoft has done very well with Nintendo IPs and this point it seems obvious that both the management of Nintendo and the management of Ubisoft is fine with this cooperation. So I wouldn't be surprised, if another Ubisoft IP works with Nintendo characters soon.

my greatest games: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

10 years greatest game event!

bets: [peak year] [+], [1], [2], [3], [4]

Zelda BOTW 2 - Unlikely, I think this is coming 2021.

Metroid Prime 4 - Very Unlikely.

Bayonetta 3 - Possibly, we still haven't seen anything but it's been silent for a long time and it may be a short window between it's reemergence and it's release.

TBH I have no idea about unannounced titles, I can say a few I want like Mario Strikers but it's not something I expect will actually happen.

Mario 3D World port or Mario 3D World sequel seems like a good shout though.

I don't know why people keep thinking BOTW 2 coming out holiday next year isn't going to happen. I mean, it may not, but there is a good chance of it happening.

Majora's Mask only took 2 years. By holiday next year BOTW will be 3.5 years old. That is plenty of time. It is very possible.

Pikmin 4 is not confirmed to be in development. You have to stop clinging to false hopes.

You wish. Hope never dies.
