Forums - Sales Discussion - Update: Pokemon Sword/Shield sells 2 million in first 3 days in Japan, doubles Switch hardware to 180k

UPDATE:

Now confirmed to be 2 million. Those untracked Nintendo store/Amazon purchases plus digital really added up.

Shoutout to Marth for the info!

ORIGINAL POST:

According to Famitsu.

This is the biggest launch for a Switch game in Japan to date, topping Smash Bros Ultimate, which previously held the record at 1.24 million. (Again, physical only)

Even outselling smash‘s FW, impressive if you also consider that digital share among switch games is now higher than a year ago.

The game deserves it, having a blast playing it.

X/Y and Sun/Moon sold around 2.1 and 1.9 million copies at retail, respectively, when they launched. Even with a high digital ratio thanks to the NSO Vouchers, say 30%,, that would still clock Sword/Shield's overall launch total just under 1.8 million.

Seems a bit low compared to other mainline titles? Even factoring for a high digital ratio.

Famitsu doesn't tracker Amazon neither Nintendo Store.

Nintendo did claim 10 million in Japan, sold to consumers, three weeks ago. Only now Famitsu reporting same thing.

And digital ration is a mystery. A higher digital ratio maybe is 50% or more. Only in January, we have known.

My prediction digital ratio - 350- 600k  in the first week

That's quite a decline on other mainline Pokemon games. Need to see the digital spread. But it's looking like this will be the worst opening of a mainline title in Japan.

I have zero attraction for Pokemon...This game only means this graph to me now.

We patiently wait to know about the hardware boost.

Current PB on Secret of Mana remake : 2h27 (2nd)
Strongest worldwide achievement on TGM : 1st European S13 rank
Fastest TGM3 MASTER in Europe : rank Master V in 5min10
Western record on TGM3 EASY : 1484
Current PB on Power Ranger (Game Gear) : 10min06 (World Record)

Non-geek activity : ThermalHungary

Even going by physical sales only, it's a bigger opening than Ultra Sun/Moon. Isn't that mainline?

It's likely bigger than Diamond/Pearl's 1,588,734 first week too.

Yeah with digital (and Amazon + Nintendo which Famitsu apparently doesn't track) it's almost certainly well above that.
