I need to remember to do my list this weekend or else I'll start late and won't be able to catch up.

We are getting really close, less than a week now. So I call upon some that didn't react so far but were joining in the past: @Salnax @ClassicGamingWizzz @celador @Boutros @Carl @CGI-Quality @Pavolink @KLXVER @Slarvax @Vinther1991 @non-gravity @flashfire926 @Kai_Mao @Zisbest @Barozi
Took your time to invite me
50 games is quite a lot, I hope I can get a complete list ready in time. I'll give it a try at the very least. Be prepared for mots of indies and 90's PC nostalgia, though

My lists for the past two years contain some 90s PC nostalgia too. Maybe we share a few games.
Scoobes said: Your approach is how I started when Smeags first started this event years ago. After a couple of years it developed into the insane method I have now! I kept finding new games I played that year that I wanted to add but also remembering old classics I wanted to keep and didn't have a way to sort which ones I actually wanted to have in the top 50. So I ended up with my current method! |
Aaaah yeah, I get you! It can get tough to narrow it to 50 when one enjoys so many games roughly equally really. I hear you. I kind of wanted to include a few more entries, like A Hat in Time, on my list this year as well, but couldn't quite find the room. There were some tough calls.
Okay, one last experiment with colors. Gonna see if using a brighter text color makes the visibility difference...
EDIT 1: Nevermind. I couldn't even get the background color to show up this time for whatever reason. I think I'll just do a straightforward table and not try to be fancy.
EDIT 2: I was looking through last year's lists just now and found the best one.
EDIT 3: In all seriousness though, Bisa's list is the one that seems the most similar to how mine will look this year, spiritually at least. There's little actual overlap really, but there's more overlap between my list and this one than between my list and any other I saw when looking over those from last year. Just in case anyone was looking to try and guess what sorts of games I currently like the most. And I know all of you are.
EDIT 4: This isn't actually a new edit, I just felt like pretending there was one more.

After a quick look, we sure do!

The 90's was undoubtedly the best era for PC games. They just don't make games like those anymore (although I really wish they did).
curl-6 bet me that PS5 + X|S sales would reach 56m before year end 2023 and he was right.
My Bet With curl-6

I think there are some good and fun games in the indie sector. There are also many attempts to bring life to old but not forgotten gameplay sectors. For instance, I long decried the downfall of the Infinity engine games like Baldur's Gate. But nowadays we not only have the remakes of both Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale; there are also many new games in the likes of the old: Pillars of Eternity 1+2, Divinity Original Sin and now even Baldur's Gate 3. All these make use of the progress in the technology, so that the experience can be progressed, while keeping the old values. I see the same for other areas too. Recently released quite some shooters that replicate old-school shooters for instance.
So the situation isn't as bad anymore as it was ten years ago.

That's a good point. Both Pillars of Eternity and Divinity Original Sin are games that I've wanted to try but haven't gotten around to yet. I actually have even fonder memories around the gold box D&D games more than the Baldur's Gate line (but those were good too). I did spend hundreds of hours playing Neverwinter Nights though, and I suppose that is along the same style.
Of course, that is just one franchise out of many greats. For example, I have seen a few franchises try to emulate Rollercoaster Tycoon and never came close to how terrific the original series was.
