Forums - Sony - Sony aquires "Insomniac Games"

Good.
Without Sony, Insomniac did blunder after blunder.

Those two companies fit together. Always have.

About time! Doea that mean Sony now owns Sunset Overdrive?

Microsoft gave Insomniac back Sunset Overdrive IP...... which Sony now owns.... so yes.

Get ready for Sunset Overdrive Remastered + Sunset Overdrive 2 for PS5.
Ontop of a new Spiderman 2.... and maybe a Resistance 4 + 1,2,3 remaster.

HUGE aquire.

It was never Microsoft’s IP. The only reason they went with MS for Sunset is because MS let them keep the IP. Sony would have funded Sunset, but wanted the IP in return.

Congrats! Keep up the great work@igTedPrice and crew.

God even his twitter handle is annoying.

about time it seemed like every year I'd see topics about Sony should acquire insomniac.

I'm both surprised and not surprised. It's a weird feeling.

This is not even slightly Interesting. Why buy a studio that by choice, would only develop for your consoles anways?

In short: to keep them away from Microsoft. Microsoft has been buying companies left and right and has indicated they will buy more. Sony (and likely Nintendo) are looking at this as Microsoft taking resources away from them. It's only natural they would go after a key studio that they couldn't afford to lose first. There will be more acquisitions like this. This is honestly the least surprising one as many people predicted this.

It makes sense, they've always had a close relationship and Insomniac has delivered hit after hit, especially with Spider-Man.

That's what I call an acquisition. .... congrats for both.... big news..... no one saw it coming

Seriously? Everyone was calling it.

but everyone has been calling it since the PS2 days.  Doesn't really count if you just keep being wrong until you're eventually right.  Kinda like how people say they "called" a FF7 remake announcement when they had been predicting it randomly since 2007

I am Iron Man

Inb4 SEGA aquires Atari, who aquired Sony, who aquired Insomniac to create Sunset Overdive on the Nintendo funded Nvidia Shield China Edition released exclusively in Mandarin.

Most of their titles have been on PlayStation, so this feels very natural. I hope they make Marvel's Spider-Man 2 at some point.

Far less about Microsoft and more the natural order of things at Sony. History shows they do this just prior to a new generation. I'd be more inclined to believe that than be reactionary to Microsoft (something they don't generally do).

Well, it's as the person I was replying to said: why buy a company that would work with you anyway. There is also the fact that Sony's talk of acquisitions started soon after E3 when Microsoft bought another company (after purchasing 5 others) and pledged to buy more. I'd think what you are saying would make more sense if this was a purchase that was unexpected, something that would expand their portfolio, but it's one they've worked a lot with and haven't other had a reason to purchase. It looks more like a defensive move than aggressively building their portfolio.

That said, I'm no expect on Sony's acquisitions so if you have more specific examples of what you are talking about then I'm open to hearing them.
