These games usually suck.

Like, if this were the 90's making things bigger and stronger would be cool but we should be past lazy gimmicks like this. I'd rather it not be there at all. I kinda wish gimmicks like Z Moves were never introduced, now they feel like each game has to have a soul-less gimmick to invoke "new". That being said the region itself does look interesting and the Wild Area is a step in the right direction. Gamefreak still has some growing to do before I really get excited for their games again if I'm being completely honest but this is somewhat of a sizable jump from Sun/Moon. |
No...

Looking back as well, I'm thankful that tall grass is 3D now in Pokemon Sword and Shield and not 2D. That bill boarded grass would of stuck out like a sore thumb.

I know there are other games that can be used as inspiration. No need to act like I don’t know. It just points out that while things can improve, it’s still impressive considering how many species are there in the games. If you want to be the animator of over 800 Pokemon and create dynamic animation the way you want to within a reasonable timeline that aligns with the almost annual Pokemon releases and within the production budget Game Freak and Nintendo has, then be my guest.

Nah. This one is more alive. Like look at the pokemon and characters expressions. Look at the stadium design with so many people. And look at how good the different abilities during the Dynamax mode. The 3DS wont be able to run that. Hey, I said HD 3DS game. And when I say it looks like an HD 3DS game it has to do with texture quality and lighting. The models for Pokemon have been used since the 3DS and the character models are something that could have been done on 3DS in terms of poly count. You are right that you wouldn't have that many characters on 3DS in full 3D but that's just a matter of GPU difference, not necessarily evocative of Game Freak's presentation skills. For Pokemon this probably does look good to a lot of people, and if that's the case for them then more power to you all. It's just that for me, I've grown up with a lot of Japanese game franchises including Pokemon, and to see that they do little to improve each generation compared to other franchises and don't really take risks, it just does nothing for me. And hey, I get it, Graphics isn't everything and Game Freak isn't necessarily a graphical powerhouse but even game play mechanics like Dynamax are just stale to me. The Stadiums are just going to be "Oh okay it's a stadium, let me get ready to Dynamax" and I highly dislike formulaic game structures like this. And yeah I'm probably bitching and ranting about this game a bit much but man I just want Game Freak to evolve and get out of their comfort zone a bit. |

Or they could just get a better developer. Imagine a Pokemon game developed by Level 5 or Atlus. Hell, even Media.Vision.

Again...I said at times. In terms of texture quality and lighting. And again, I said HD 3DS game not necessarily a "3DS" game. Maybe I'll renege and say HD PS2 game instead or early PS3 game.
I would advise going back and looking at the trailer and see the grass in Sword and Shield is not 3D, it's still 2D planes of grass. There's just more of it and each blade is most likely a single polygon with an alpha on it.
At 1:07 I hope you all can see where I'm coming from with this HD 3DS/PS2 angle. It's scenes like these that really make it look this way. There are scenes that look quite nice but in almost ever scene the texture quality is ass. I say this as someone who has spent 5+ years studying as a 3D Artist and working for miscellaneous studios. So when I say something I'm not saying it out of spite but out of practice and habit. Like I said I bitch about textures and lighting all the time it's just what I've been taught.

My guy, let's get some stuff sorted out. So there's not just 1 animator in a production team. There's several animators. Models are most likely going to be pulled from Sun and Moon and given texture quality of around 1280x720. That's not necessarily a tall order in itself. Animation is difficult but a team of seasoned animators should have no issue getting animations out and ready. For example the developers of Dragon Quest XI not only outclassed Game Freak in terms of visuals but each monster is more detailed, uses maps to add detail, and each model has several animations for its states. For example, when a monster sleeps in that game the sleep animation is not just its idle animation with some Zs over it.
And you may not care about Dragon Quest XI at all and that's fine, my point is that there are teams that do have heavier work loads and provide better results than Game Freak. And Sword and Shield has been in development for at least 3 years.

True, most games suck. Unfortunately, the same applies to games called Pokémon.
I don't wanna be the animator of over 800 Pokémon, but you'd imagine that they'd have a large enough budget to hire a lot of animators for a game that's guaranteed to sell at least 15 million copies. I mean, dude. FIFTEEN MILLION COPIES. Do you have any idea how much that is? Most AAA games out there don't sell that much, it's ridiculous for a game like Pokémon to look so low-budget and lazy. After over 20 years of Game Freak, we've all learned to accept it, but it shouldn't be acceptable. |
I mean I get where you are coming from, but I wouldn’t call Game Freak lazy. It’s about balancing what they can and cannot do within a reasonable timeframe. And let’s not pretend over a 100 people on staff (about 143 employees total at Game Freak) is not enough to create a big Pokemon game. And maybe that is a reasonable staff they can handle for now. Who knows. It’s not like all of the profits from the games go to Game Freak so they can use it how they want to. The Pokemon Company, Creatures, Inc., and Nintendo get their share as well. Most games don’t have the type of release schedule that Pokemon has, with the closest to that are Call of Duty, the annual sports games, and Battlefield.

A pokemon game developed by Level 5 would be really interesting, considering how well they have managed the Youkai Watch series. They may actually bother bringing backold features long lost for some reason.
