Everyone copies someone else. It whether or not they improve on the idea or simply add the feature that makes it acceptable to me.

Example, Nintendo didn't create waggle. However they reinvented its use and created a very unique experience on Wii. Sony simply copied motion from MS and other 3rd party controllers for PC. Part of the reason the sixaxis has no good implementation in ps3 games.

Didn't waggle and gesture based stuff really start with the eye toy?

Nope. That started waaaay before that... with some Atari thing. Also, the Power Glove.

Really? I thought the Eye Toy was a brand new thing, though it must have been the first with the camera

Nope, and well... No. the first camera for a home console was the "Dream Eye".

For... you guessed it. The Dreamcast. It was supposed to have games much like the Playstation Eye did but well the dreamcast failed, so Sony took the idea and made it their own.

Which itself was just taken from numerous arcade games.

The Eyetoy was just another idea Sony coopted and called their own.

It seems like nothing these days is original.... apart from the inclusion of blu-ray (was the PS2 first with DVDs?)

Yeah, i believe it was the first one with DVD playback. It might of been the first one with CD playback too. Not sure if the Dreamcast offered that or not.

There were Dreamcasts that played audio and video media, but i'm not sure if the official models involved media playback.

Hrmmm... Well in some aspects Sony does copy ideas, then on the other aspect, they copied and made better o.O; is that really a problem?

Sony "Copied" Rumble. Does anyone remember the rumblepack on the N64? Man talk about a piece of shit -_-;;; Thats certainly one feature they enhanced and standardized.

Hard drive attached to a console was started by Microsoft (as far as I know ) with the original xbox, now the 360 doesn't even have that as a standard feature, Sony "Copied" the idea and made it a permanent feature, hell, they even gave you the ability to change to a superior drive.

As mentioned earlier, Sony helped standardize disc formats for making games. CD, DVD, and now Blu-ray. And made it a pretty set standard of movie playback on consoles.

The guide button was on the PSP, and the PSP was in planning long before the xbox I'd say xD.

Sony may not always make the most original idea's, but I'll be damned if they don't enrich the environment, Gaming would certainly not be where it is today without Nintendo, but the exact same could be said of Sony.

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

Just like Wii Fit is a direct copy off of the Eyetoy's fitness game.

in a way yes, they copied things, but its not the first time anything like this happened.
the ps3 didnt copy anything from the 360...
if anything, the 360 was modeled after wat the ps3 would become

Of course Sony copied Nintendo. They copied Nintendo with the PS1 and they are coping Nintendo again. The more new products and ideas Nintendo comes out with, the better. It is good that Sony and MS copy Nintendo because it makes for better games.

Because obviously Nintendo never benefitted any from copying Sony and MS, such as adding on online service and moving away from cartridge based games.

You do realized that NEC released the Turbo CD in 1989 right? You do also realize that Sega Net, first via the Saturn in Japan and later on as the Dreamcast's worldwide on-line service, preceded X-box Live right?

And Shigeru Miyamoto created the Heavens and the Earth in six days.

@ ClaudeLv250

As has been pointed out on these boards many times before, Sony introduced analog controls on the PS before the N64 was released, so they can hardly be said to have copied the idea. Analog controls had been around for ages before this, but AFAIK Sony were the first to introduce the dual analog that is now standard.

The only thing that seems straight up copied from the competitor this generation is the motion controls. Right around the time it was announced and was getting a lot of positive news suddenly the sixaxis was announced. I do remember a lot of developers saying they had never heard of that function before.

Between generations companies rip each other off all the time, and that is a good thing. Creating an amalgamation of all the best features of old competitors and making a new device is a great idea for consumers as well as for buisnesses. Copying is just part of doing buisness, and it only helps the end consumer.

Today I was in a heated debate with my friend about how ps3 "copied" 360 and wii thats why it is selling when walking home from school. He said things like tihs:

PS3 is copying in game music player and messaging

PS3 copied motion controls

PS3 copied the guide button

PS3 copied the sims and Mii

First off, 360 blatantly copied the wii motion controls, and they copied the HDMI port on the back of their console with the Elite. The Xbox copied dvd drive off of ps2

But my point was that every system needs to have this kind of technology to keep up and compete with other consoles. Same goes for things like cars. If Toyota was still using cars and engines from the 50's, do you think they would be as successful as they are now?

They didnt copy, they took ideas and made it into something uniqe and better. Copy is when you do the exact, same thing like photo copying a sheet of paper.

The PS3 went into developement far before the other two, and I believe the motion controls were part of the plan all along, as well as the guide button with the wireless controllers, and the idea of Home as also been around for quite awhile and is just taking Sony alot longer than expected.

360 does not have motion control as of yet and if the 360 can be accused of copying the PS2 then you'd have to put that on the Wii as well. Although the HDMI was copying the PS3, when the 360 released Microsoft said component was better and that's why they didnt want it, but I believe it was more a matter of price.
