Still though, TheSource, the PS2 was/is over 1.2b in software and climbing. That's even more mind boggling.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

PS2 Software after 3 years in America: 17,680,551 (Counting Launch) 2000-2002
Wii Software after 3 years in America: 60,660,409 (Counting this year) 2006-2008.
I foudn that interesting. Have to see how the rest of it has gone so far.
Edit:
Japan
PS2 17,680,551 through 2002
Wii 60,660,409 through 2008.

PS2 you mean. However, this comparison fails, because a lot of sales of PS2 games are missing in the database. |
Ah are they? My bad.

It's posable that no console going forward ever will (not anytime in the next 20 years or so anyway).
Here is why.
I have every confidence that the PS3, by the end of its life, will outsell the PS2. It has far more reason to last longer on the market. It has online, HD in ever console, plays the movie format of the next generation, still has a ton of untapped potential, and due to gaming budgets today, is about as powerful a system as anyone will develop to for a while.
The reason it will sell less software, is because a lot less will be made for it. It cost a lot to make this generation games. It's been regulated to only high end development shops.
The PS2 was seeing a what, a thousand games a year average for it's lifetime? I don't expect anything close to that for the PS3 or 360. The Wii, maybe.
The Wii doesn't apear to have the same lifepsan as the PS2 , in it's first couple of years Nintnedo have brought out all their major first party titles Mario Galaxy,Kart,Zelda,WiiPlay,Wii Fit etc. I don't think they could keep that up for another 6 years.
Plus the casual market is unpredictable , i'd guess they're always looking for newer, innovative and different ways to have fun . Will the Wii remain the casual's choice for years to come ? I'm not so sure.
3rd Parties will keep the Wii going that's for sure.

It has more reason, but it is still missing the most important reason to last longer ... Sales
The PS2 continues to sell software today because there are tens of millions of PS2 owners who still haven't bought a 'current' generation console; the Gamecube and XBox had far more going for them when it came to technology, but because their userbases were so small and their (primary) selling features (over the PS2) were eclipsed by the release of newer consoles their lives ended early ...
Wow, I figgured SNES hardware would have been alot bigger.
Seriously though, I think the Wii will take the PS2's previous crown for cash cow in no time at all.
We'll miss you George.

But would PS2 have sold as much if it wasn't easy to mod?
I think the only home console that has a shot at beating PS2 software, lifetime, is the wii. I think this because the wii, in my opinion, will be the only console north of 100 million at the end of the gen. With the largest userbase, it will have the closest chance at moving the most software.
If we count handheld's, I think the DS will beat it (if it lasts long enough).
It depends on how long this gen lasts ...
Wii can do it provived it gets the 3rd party support and lasts till around 2014 - 2016 ....
PS3 / 360 will not and cannot do it though ... however i do believe the can both pass 500 million pieces of software sold provided neither of them try to end this gen early ...
Wii has a big chance, DS is almost certain.
