What I want to know is why do people have such poor taste for politicians in elections? I can go country by country and either the talent pool is poor or just assholes run for power. I've lost faith in humanity. Just a bunch of assholes running countries with their blind followers.

I think it's just the dualist mentality in the elections. Since the elections always end up being decided on two candidates, people tend to flock to the most popular ones even if they're not their first picks, and the popular ones tend to be the ones with the strongest marketing campaigns, which also happen to be the extremists from either side, because they are more aggressive in the approach. As such, sensible middle-term people always get lost in the rubble.
Here, given the current state the country is in after being governed by a leftist party for the last 16 years, it only makes sense the right-wing extremists would eventually strike back. It's a shame, really... I still wish the right-wing dude running for the last election in 2014 won, because at least then people would know now that the right-wing is just as corrupt and incapable of handling the country, so maybe the extremism wouldn't be as rampant as it is.
I think the only way of fixing it is changing the electorial system altogether. Allowing people to vote on several candidates they believe in would go a long way - say, you have a "first choice" and "second choice" president, you can still vote on the popular guy as second choice, but your vote only counts for him if the first choice wasn't popular enough to be elected. Or maybe, allow people to vote on candidates they don't want, so we don't end up with two opposing candidates who each are rejected by over 40% of the population. It's ridiculous that people vote for Bolsonaro because they're "sick of PT", when there were loads of other candidates who proposed much more sensible governments and ideas, and could have at least managed to maintain some level of peace in the country. Now, however, it's done. All the good guys are out and we're left with the choice of the corrupt left-wing party whose government fucked up the country (though people forget how great the beginning of their government was, or else they wouldn't even have a country to fuck up), or the extremist right-wing fascists who care only about money and will take it at the expense of everyone else.
